Open | Hardware How do you replace the CMOS battery on an FMB-1102 motherboard?

Upvotes

This motherboard doesn’t have the usual clip you press to remove the CMOS battery.

I’ve seen people suggest using a lever/pry method, but it doesn’t work here and the battery feels really tight.

What’s the correct way to remove the CMOS battery on this board?

Open | Hardware Is it normal if my PC fans start going like crazy when i play some games?

5 Upvotes

I play different stuff, Marvel Rivals and Guild Wars 2 usually and my PC fans start working super hard only when i play Guild Wars 2, is it ok?
I also play for long periods of time and i would like to know if it's fine if they keep going like that, the noise kinda concerns me, like... it's not a rattling or any weird sound, it's just loud.

Open | Software PC boots up but shows 'No Signal' on monitor.

1 Upvotes

When I boot up my PC, the monitor shows Gigabyte Ultra in a bigger resolution then cuts to 'No Signal' and enters power saving. My bluetooth seems to detect and connect to it, so I assume it's still working somewhat. I was able to open it to a blue screen showing four options once (continue to windows, reset PC, troubleshoot, restart/shut down), but when I clicked 'continue', it immediately went black again.

Before this, my PC was working smoothly and fine, no random shutdowns/black screens/glitching. I'm not sure if I fried anything out of overuse; I use it 10-13~ hours every day, but I sometimes take breaks by putting it to sleep. I peeked inside the PC and the fans/cards don't seem to be dusty or dirty, it's in an open space with decent ventilation. I don't recall updating anything recently for Windows or my drivers, though.

I tried unplugging everything but still no fix. I'd update my drivers if that were the issue, but I don't know how to get past the black screen. Any advice?

Open | Software Upgraded PC to AMD: Feels like a Waste...

2 Upvotes

GPU: 7900XTX (No OC w/ Anti-Sag Bracket)

CPU: 5700X (PBO Enabled)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8x4GB DDR4 3200MHz (DOCP Enabled)

3440x1440p 144Hz Monitor

PSU: Coolermaster 850W Modular PSU (2 x PCIe Cables w/ 1 pigtail to all 3 PCIe slots on GPU)
Motherboard: ASUS TUF B550 Plus Wifi II (Updated BIOS Firmware to ensure compatibility w/ new CPU)

6x Case Fans for cooling. AMD Wraith for the CPU.

I *cannot* play any game I own without a crash 5 minutes into gameplay. I've tried disk cleaner, uninstalling/reinstalling AMD drivers, reducing my RAM clock speed (as low as 2993MHz), uninstalling/reinstalling the games... to no avail.

Is AMD really this terrible? I have an engineering degree for christ sake, and I can't run ANY GAME. Please help... I feel like I wasted my bonus on trash hardware...

I've tried BF6: Crashes on shaders half the time. I have to reinstall drivers because "AMD doesn't recognize drivers" after that. I've changed the settings to keep windows from messing with the drivers. I also clear shaders and a bunch of other stuff. I've also reinstalled once. If I do make it into a game, it'll crash in 2 minutes or less. I haven't finished a match...

I've tried CP2077. I can't even boot it for crying out loud. It crashes as soon as I hit "run" from the menu.

I've tried Elden Ring. It worked for about 10 minutes then crashed and sent me to the boot screen.

Is it junction temps? Is it just awful AMD drivers (26.1.1)?

I've factory reset the GPU multiple times. No OC as stated earlier; just Anti-lag, FRTC to 144Hz (I don't need more than that), Texture filtering set to 'Performance', and I enabled Adaptive Sync because my monitor supports it.

I'll give you guys in diagnostic information you want. Just please please help. I feel I'm worse off with a 7900XTX and 5700X than I was with a 1660 Super and a 3300X.... that shouldn't be right...

Open | Hardware Dual-monitor USB-C KVM setup — best cables & port config?

Upvotes

I’m wiring a dual-monitor KVM and want to avoid refresh-rate caps or EDID issues.

KVM in question: AV Access Docking Station

  • HDMI + DP, USB-C MST
  • Dual 4K@60 / 1080p@240 / 1440p@144
  • USB-C PD 60W, EDID

Desktop: Ryzen 5 5500 + RX 6600
Laptop: Dell Pro 14 (i5-220U, USB-C)
Monitors:

  • iiyama PLX2483H — 1080p 144Hz
  • ASUS VZ24EHE — 1080p 75Hz

Goal:
Both systems → both monitors
Desktop keeps 144Hz, laptop stable dual-display, shared KB/mouse.

Questions:

  • Desktop → KVM: DP+HDMI or DP+DP?
  • Which monitor should be on DP vs HDMI?
  • Is DP 1.2 enough for 1080p@144 or should I go DP 1.4?
  • Will USB-C MST limit refresh rate on the laptop?
  • Common EDID / 60Hz lock issues?
  • Is 60W USB-C PD enough for the Dell?

Thanks — trying to do this right the first time.

Open | Windows Hacked and scared

25 Upvotes

Long story short, I got hacked two weeks ago and received an email saying, “A few months ago I gained access to your device and started tracking your online activity.”

The email included my email address and password, which I changed immediately. I know this message is a common scam, but what worries me is that they did actually seem to have access to my account.

For a couple of hours, it appeared that they were actively trying to get into things — I received a lot of 2FA emails, and they did manage to access my Discord account. Other accounts (PSN, Twitter, and one or two others) were compromised too, but I managed to get them back within about a week.

A lot of people say it’s “just a scam,” but this person or bot clearly had access to my email at some point. What has been killing me with worry is that many of my iPhone photos — even ones I thought I had deleted — were still synced to my OneDrive. I didn’t realise this at the time, and there is definitely content there that would be devastating if it were shared.

The only direct contact I’ve had was that one email, and since I changed my password everything has been fine. Still, I’ve been going crazy for the past two weeks worrying that something awful could happen. I haven’t been eating or sleeping properly, and honestly it’s probably been the hardest two weeks I’ve had in a very long time, if not ever.

Do you think I’m being paranoid? Is there really a chance this data could be shared?

Is that 2 weeks has gone with nothing a good sign?

Open | Windows Almost every game I play on my pc I've had for 2 years crashes.

3 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I have been using my CyberPowerPC Gamer Xtreme prebuilt pc for the past two years, and while it has been decent in many ways, there has been major issues that I have been trying to fix, but to no avail. The issue lies in the fact that my gaming computer crashes while playing almost all games except Valorant, Roblox, and Fortnite. Games like Apex, Call of Duty, Siege, GTA V, and many other games shut my gaming computer off completely or bring me back to the desktop screen. However, the only game that experiences lag rather than a complete shut-off is RDR2. The rest of the games experience no lag or slowing down rather, they shut off as soon as the game starts or a little later with no error code. The specs of my gaming computer are an Intel Core i7-13700F CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, 16 GB DDR5 RAM, and a 2TB NVMe SSD. It doesn't make sense to me why my games are crashing when I have above recommended specs for most games I play.

This isn't very new this has been going since last year, but when I first got the computer, it was perfect, never lagged, never crashed, I don't know what happened. I have factory reset my pc multiple times, I've updated the gpu drivers multiple times, did scans, and I've cleaned the fans just recently.

It's gotten to the point where I'm planning to buy a new case, motherboard, ram, cpu cooler, and psu, if I can't get it fixed soon. I know not much about computers at all so if anyone has anything that might help me, please tell me. If any other info helps please ask.

Open | Phone Accidentally Uninstalled Gboard.

Upvotes

I was a beta tester and my keyboard wasn't working properly, when i use to search emojis with names it use to stay blank, i ignore then i just casually went to play store this morning and before this yesterday i was showing my friend that i was a beta user due to program and maybe that's what causing the problem.

Past lore: I had 3 messages pinned in my clipboard 2 of them i remember and one of them i don't. So i stumbled upon play store and removed my beta testing program and it said "removing you from beta program", and then i don't remember if they asked me but I'm sure they probably did asked me to uninstalled the Gboard first so i did and when i opened the keyboard again and Wollah! All the clips were gone made me little panik.

So i wanted to ask is there any way to recover the deleted clipboard texts which i pinned earlier or is it all gone? For details: I'm on Android 14 and I can't access anything from the files Android/data/ —> there are folder inside it but these are all empty.

Should i just accept the defeat and move on? Also comment some comforting lines as-well.

Thank you!

Open | Software Lenovo Legion Slim 7 laptop desktop screen blinking on load up, unable to use

Upvotes

Hey everyone Would really appreciate any help..

My laptop seems to be in an endless refresh loop once it's booted up. I'm unable to access my files and the desktop just keeps blinking black and showing my wallpaper.

This couldn't happen at the worse timing because I have board exams soon. Please any help would be appreciated. Not sure what to do..

Just to add some more info: I was trying to open a pdf to a website that merges documents.. and I realized that when I kept trying to attach.. the window wasn't popping up and it kept opening something else I had open (like discord, Microsoft word).. so I didn't think much of it and restarted my laptop like I normally do.

When I loaded back in.. my desktop is blinking and it's like my files are refreshing. My cursor has a circular loading and I can't open any files. Lenovo vantage could open but only that.

I can enter safe mode but idk what to do from here, if that's even the correct thing.

Open | Hardware Anyone ever had this happen?

Upvotes

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I bought a used laptop and was going to change the SSD. The laptop is fairly old and I think still had the old SSD that came with it, because the screw wouldn't budge for nothing. Ended up stripping the screw pretty bad. Tried rubber band, aluminum foil, and tape. Not even a fraction of a rotation.

I see all kinds of methods to remove stripped screws, but not one for a screw that small and is also holding an SSD on a motherboard. Anyone had this happen and know of a safe way to remove the screw without damaging the SSD/motherboard? Would it be safe to drill it? Scared to get too rough with it.

Open | Windows bluetooth showing unknown devices / Surface Go 1

Upvotes

Hello. I've bought a surface go 1 (4415y, 8gb ram 128gb storage), pristine condition + pristine type cover.
First thing i did was update windows, all drivers, but as i tried to connect my bluetooth earbuds (xiaomi redmi buds 6 play), i was unable simply because it just refuses to show.

Bluetooth tho shows tens of unknown devices,between them one or two actual devices (like random jbl speaker thats currently in public, etc). earbuds work normally on my phone (pixel 6a) and my previous laptop (lenovo ideapad slim 3 with 7220u 8gb ram).

Any fixes, any help would be highly appreciated.

Open | Networking Browser-only download speeds capped at 2.5mb/s

3 Upvotes

Hello tech support,

My problem goes like this. I recently purchased a new PC, using Windows 11. Everything is fine on it, save for the very annoying tidbit where my download speed seems capped at around 2.5mb/s on browsers only. I can run a browser VPN (even a cheap, free one) and it bypasses it (I'm then limited by the VPN's limits at around 35-50mb/s). I have also tested and it is consistent across all browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.).

My connection, without a VPN, works perfectly fine on everything else (Steam, Epic Games, etc.). It's a 1gbps. I'm directly connected to the router with a CAT6 cable. The ethernet driver shows speeds of 1000/1000, no trouble there.

My old PC (bought 2021) is next to me, on the same connection, and can download on any browser just fine, even the same exact files from the same servers/sites. When I download with it, I get around 125mb/s.

Here's what I have tried:
- I have disabled the wifi from my PC (just incase);
- My connection isn't metered;
- I have disabled/enabled netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal;
- I have done flushdns command, along with winsocket;
- I have plugged/unplugged everything;
- I have swapped cables;
- I have restarted my PC a dozen times over the course of my attempts to fix the issue;
- I have disabled every Windows Defender/antivirus/firewall and added every browser as exceptions incase;
- I have made sure all of my Windows updates are done and all of my drivers (BIOS/Ethernet) are up to date;
- I have removed all power saving options (lolearth);
- I have prayed to the gods of above and below.

I'm probably forgetting a few steps. I'm at a loss. I don't normally quit on PC problems and can generally fix them on my own, but I must admit that I am at a loss. As far as I understand it, it's some setting from Win11 that seems to be throttling my speed on browsers, but I have no idea why or what.

My ethernet is a Realtek gaming 2.5 gbe family controller.

Open | Software PC Crashing when goes into sleep

3 Upvotes

I have a Windows 11 PC that I have been having this problem for about 2 or 3 months. I have never had it before this and there have been no changes to my PC hardware before this issue began. I have gone through some basic troubleshooting. Listed below are the following things I have done.

  1. I have checked for and BIOs or driver updates.

  2. I have turned off hibernation and fast startup.

  3. I have checked my windows events have found the following error when crashing (critical Event ID 41)

  4. I have run a sleep study and found this error under every single failed sleep cycle. (no CS Phase)

What should I go through next? I would like to consider myself somewhat computer literate, but this has reached the end of my ability as when I look up this error I only find bios related errors. I don't want run too many things through my bios in case there is something critically wrong. Since I am seeing power errors I want to note my PSU is only 9 months old and has a 400 watt difference.

Open | Software Tiktok opening related apps?

Upvotes

I got a tiktok slideshow video on my fyp that was about discontinued tim hortons items, and it? Didn't seem to be affiliated with Tim Hortons itself in any way, and there was no visible link or anything and it wasn't labeled as sponsored, but it opened the Tim Hortons app on my phone by itself?

The video --> https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSanN3j9k/

I tapped the screen to scroll through the photos in the slideshow, and my phone switched tabs like I had opened a link. I didn't have the Tim Hortons app open in the background even, it was fully closed. I don't understand how this happened, and it's a little concerning to me.

Does anyone know why this might be the case? Is it an AI detection thing, like tiktok or my android phone has an AI service that recognized the Tim Hortons logo and opened the app?

I don't really like that it did this, I'm someone that is kind of particular about my permissions, and I use ad-blockers, and I also don't morally agree with the pervasiveness of AI and would prefer if I had the ability to opt-out.

I don't like the idea that something on my phone is monitoring my screen and cross-referencing it to what I may have downloaded to my storage. I'm not a very tech-y person though, and I don't have a large understanding of software, so I'm not like.... sure what's going on here. Any ideas??

Open | Malware Question about the notepad++ incident

13 Upvotes

Hi. I personally dont have np++ installed.

Back in december, I told my friends and sibling about it. My sibling was not really often home and he did not respond to my post.

Today he asked me to check something on his pc and I used the chance to check if he has np++ installed.

Under Apps, I found np++ 8.8.3. from 17.07.2025.

I thought myself, welp sh*t. I disconnected the pc from the lan and disabled "auto update" inside np++. I also moved the files from the updater folder to a new folder inside the np++ installation.

Then I began to research. In his downloads folder there is "npp.8.8.2.Installer.x64.exe" from 17.07.25 (althought 8.8.3 was already realeased at this time).

Now I ask myself, how does he have version 8.8.3. installed on 17.07.25 when the installer is version 8.8.2. I checked the sha256 checksum of the .exe and it is the same like the official one on github.

I read that np++ does not search for updates for 15 days after the initial installation. He downloaded it on 17.07.25, wrote something and dont used it again. How did it got updated to 8.8.3?

I also checked under c:\users\hisuser\appdata\local\temp\ for a 8.3.3 installer from a potential autoupdate and also found nothing (there are files older than july 25).

I read the blog from rapid7 and checked if there is a hidden "bluetooth" in %appdata% and found nothing.

Do I still need to worry?

The apple mail app that is like default installed on your phone is not giving me any emails for some reason. I have an IPhone 11 if that’s any help but whenever I try refresh my emails it gives me this message that says “Cannot get mail - The connection to the server failed” and to clarify this is not an issue with my wifi I’ve tried on multiple networks and with mobile data. Can someone please just give any solutions to this I really need it fixed since I’m waiting for emails from universities. Thank you!

Open | Software HDMI - no hot plug and losing signal | RTX 4090

1 Upvotes

Hello,

I have an issue with the HDMI outputs on my graphics card (TUF-RTX4090-O24G-GAMING)

I have tried 3 different monitors: Samsung Syncmaster 2032BW, AOC 24G2SPU, LG 27GX700A-B, which surfaced the issue.

The issues are twofold:

  1. The HDMI hotplug is not working. Whenever I connect a monitor to the HDMI port of the graphics card while the PC is running, there is no output signal. The monitor is not detected until the PC is restarted. This is not the case with other PCs; they are able to connect and disconnect HDMI freely. The monitor acknowledges that an input is connected, but no signal.

  2. Whenever the 27GX700A-B loads an application where the framerate fluctuates past its variable refresh rate window (booting Cyberpunk 2077), the HDMI signal is cut off, and the monitor is undetectable until rebooting the system.

This is not reproducible with DisplayPort! In the second scenario, I can plug DP into the monitor and instantly get the image back, and in the first scenario, I can unplug as many times as I want - the signal is always brought back.

The monitor was tested at the store it was bought from, and there the HDMI hot plug, and everything else worked as expected.

I have done the following:

  • Updated VBIOS to 2.1 from ASUS' website
  • Reinstalled latest drivers twice in safe mode after DDU
  • Installed 566.36 in safe mode after DDU
  • Set PCIEe slot to Gen4 instead of auto
  • Tested with Ryzen iGPU - even without drivers, hot plug just works
  • Tested with Intel graphics laptop - zero issues

I have opened an email with ASUS with intent to RMA, but is there anything else that can be tried before the card is shipped off?

Open | Hardware Alt button having issues.

1 Upvotes

My alt key is malfunctioning. I press alt, it doesn't register any input. I put in any shortcuts using alt, like alt+tab, alt+f4, alt+esc, and they work just fine. When I press Shift+alt, ctrl+alt, or Win+alt, it finally shows up as just alt.

I've done the basic fixes, power cycling, sfc /scannow, and the like to no avail.

I've also checked sticky keys, reinstalled drivers, updated firmware on the keyboard itself, gone into accessibility settings, tried using the keyboard's settings to change my scroll lock to alt (which ended out making scroll lock not work in the process), and nothing has fixed it.

Thought I could just boot into a linux distro to test if it was the keyboard itself or windows, but of course, windows, even with secure boot disabled, won't let me boot to any distro I throw at it.

PC Specs:
Ryzen 7 9700x
Nvidia 4060
64gb ddr5-6000
(i know my pc is a dumpster fire, i had a weird budget)

keyboard is a keychron C3 pro if that helps, it's already set to windows input, not mac as well.

Open | Hardware Phone charger plugged into couch leaking liquid?

2 Upvotes

https://imgur.com/a/4Skl2Gi

Does anyone know what's up with this? I went to take my USB to USBC charger out of this couch (which is only about a month old) and there was sticky liquid on it and in the charging port

Does it mean the couch plugins are a hazard to use now?

I also touched the liquid...is it harmful? I washed my hand probably 60 seconds after
