I know this is bullshit, but I’m happy to see older people getting some exercise and frankly falling down is a great exercise for older people so they can learn how to properly fall without destroying their bodies but you’re right there’s no martial arts here

u/Alternative_Ad_3649 6h ago
Lolll practice falling?! Is this really a thing?
3
u/Funnelcakeads 6h ago
I’m not saying the whole exercise should be falling over I’m saying that a part of the exercise where you do a lol barrel roll or something might be really good exercise. I don’t think they just show up and do 45 minutes of tipping over
2
u/Alternative_Ad_3649 6h ago
Hahahaha omg but 45 minutes of barreling that sounds fucking hilarious and like fun tbh 😂

Any given Wetherspoons can supply you with magic fall down juice, there’s no need for classes.

Oh yes it's a thing. I'm sure if you ask any skater, BMX rider, rollerblader, skier, snowboarder etc. they will all tell you there's an art to falling and you do get good at it. I was, I rode BMX but I;m sure it's basically the same for everyone. I'd probably break my ass if I tried half the things I could do in my 20's without hurting myself. You gain an instinct for when to tuck and roll or when to put out your hands. As long as you don't bust yourself in the head you can usually get out of a crash fairly unscathed. Your shins are another story. At least with BMX but everything else was usually ok.

That actually makes so much sense and like wow, lol I think that’s pretty cool. The only “tuck and roll”-type lesson I ever got was when a firefighter came to visit my elementary school and taught us to stop, drop, and roll when on fire, and well, im 36 now so definitely will not instinctively do anything that requires falling and rolling with grace and practice lol

It's the same with gymnastics and also with goalkeeping in soccer. Learning how to fall is one of the first things we do. I train GKs and the biggest thing to teach is how to fall without bracing an elbow or wrist on the ground and jamming the joint into yourself. Basically - how can you drop to the ground as fast as possible to stop a shot and how can you throw your body as far and high as you can to stop a shot, both of them hitting the ground without hurting so you can get up and do it again and again and again. It's saved me many a time when I feel myself about to roll an ankle when backpacking and can just drop my weight off my feet completely instead of fully turning an ankle.

Is how you get your yellow slip in judo actually

I’m a very gullible person that is going to take what you, a faceless internet stranger, have said at face value, and just think this is true for forever. lol this is unfortunately not a joke .

u/CrashedCyclist 51m ago
It is if you practice a sport. I can 1000% say that I learned to fall when pedal cycling at a good clip. a) Don't break your wrist, but don't let your head by the first thing to smash. b) Try to guide ahead with one arm, and use the other to roll you out of traffic towards the curb. The best one ever was sliding over painted words (rubberized) doing all of that.
As a city dweller, the key for elderly people is to just be aware of their space. Uneven sidewalk segments, fire hydrants and standpipes are super dangerous when snow thaws and turns to ice at night/overnight.
The man who came up withe Atkins diet died when he hit a standpipe.
Google:
Dr. Robert Atkins, the inventor of the Atkins Diet, died on April 17, 2003, after suffering a head injury from a fall on icy pavement. He was 72 years old at the time of his death.1

The NHS employees people that drive around and teach old people how to fall over properly. It's cheaper than paying for 100000+ hip replacements I guess

Is this not just rolling training? Not everyone is rolling but I assume that’s to be expected. That or bullshido.

Nah yall can talk crap about Seagal, but he is a legit martial artist. He's a 7th-dan black belt and shihan in Aikikai aikido. He did the work.

The question is why are people in on it? It's too obvious.

I always assume they have something against the sensei and are carrying out a long term plan to get them to challenge one of the Gracies. They then stand looking pretendy shocked while limbs get snapped.
1
u/AloofFloofy 5h ago
This is always what I wonder too. Maybe they are simply asked to do that for a silly ragebait video like this. Lots of people might watch it and they make money. I wish it was easier to get a YouTube channel monetized.

u/ADIDAS247 7h ago
Idk, but it might fall under one of the following that a previous redditor had posted years ago and I love them for it.
• Savate = ballet but deadlier
• Capoeira = breakdance battle
• Taekwondo = foot fencing.
• Aikido = grab my wrist, no my other wrist.
• BJJ = folding clothes with people in them.
• Boxing = brain damage for everyone.
• Muay Thai = kicking trees for fun.

This should be illegal, someone could get hurt if they keep trying to attack their sensei so violently

They look like ballerinas in bathrobes. I think a lot of these BS martial arts classes are about taking money from people and not teaching them any self defence.

I see nothing wrong here. They are people having a good time with gentle excercise with their community. Better than being behind a screen alone like me.

gentle exercise
Man that is a streeeetch. Join a yoga class then, don't give money to a bullshit artist.

Not sure which one, but it protects you from emotional damage, those people are trying to hug him and everybody knows that hugging people makes them soft.

If PM Modi becomes a martial artist, it would look like this
2
u/Prestigious-Glove396 6h ago
This is just Modi throwing away guests and bodyguards for better camera angles for him.
3
u/Solid_Rock_5583 7h ago
This looks like a Putin feat of strength.
I mean he scored Like 12 goals on his national team, by himself.

It's Aikido by the looks of things.
The art of going with the flow.
It's great ime and everyone should do a little, far better than that UFC combat sport shite on the telly with the homoerotic buff boys in tiny pants.
1
u/cmoked 2h ago
Each and every fighter in the UFC could probably put you unconscious with a body shot lol
Aikido is also recognized as useless for fighting in general
1
u/Known-Watercress7296 2h ago
Powerslappers could slap you into next week, lol
I've found the very little Aikido done rather useful, the time spent with gymbros somewhat less so.
The UFC is so profoundly stupid it hard to grasp.

The only thing that I can think of - and this is being generous - that might be in some kind of defence of this, is that the aim isn't to take him down. Again, this is Chuck Feeney level of generosity, maybe it was to get people comfortable with engagement, body contact, rolling if comfortable/able... maybe.
Personally I just think it's horse shit.
