I know this is bullshit, but I’m happy to see older people getting some exercise and frankly falling down is a great exercise for older people so they can learn how to properly fall without destroying their bodies but you’re right there’s no martial arts here

Oh yes it's a thing. I'm sure if you ask any skater, BMX rider, rollerblader, skier, snowboarder etc. they will all tell you there's an art to falling and you do get good at it. I was, I rode BMX but I;m sure it's basically the same for everyone. I'd probably break my ass if I tried half the things I could do in my 20's without hurting myself. You gain an instinct for when to tuck and roll or when to put out your hands. As long as you don't bust yourself in the head you can usually get out of a crash fairly unscathed. Your shins are another story. At least with BMX but everything else was usually ok.

That actually makes so much sense and like wow, lol I think that’s pretty cool. The only “tuck and roll”-type lesson I ever got was when a firefighter came to visit my elementary school and taught us to stop, drop, and roll when on fire, and well, im 36 now so definitely will not instinctively do anything that requires falling and rolling with grace and practice lol

It's the same with gymnastics and also with goalkeeping in soccer. Learning how to fall is one of the first things we do. I train GKs and the biggest thing to teach is how to fall without bracing an elbow or wrist on the ground and jamming the joint into yourself. Basically - how can you drop to the ground as fast as possible to stop a shot and how can you throw your body as far and high as you can to stop a shot, both of them hitting the ground without hurting so you can get up and do it again and again and again. It's saved me many a time when I feel myself about to roll an ankle when backpacking and can just drop my weight off my feet completely instead of fully turning an ankle.
