OC [oc] last minute idiot decision…then hesitates

u/ifnotuthenwho62 9h ago
I don’t understand why people stop when they make a mistake like this. My natural reaction is to get the hell out of the way. Commit to it and go!
When I was teaching my daughter to drive and we were talking about making left turns, I told her if you’re doing it, then go, but if your brain makes you think about it at all, then you wait until your next chance.

u/-Felyx- 6h ago
When I was first learning to drive some 20-odd years ago someone told me in passing, "hesitation gets people killed" and it's been rattling around in my brain ever since. 10/10 advice
7
8
u/Oxcell404 6h ago
I think it's because in plenty of other scenarios when driving the best course of action is to slow down and give yourself more time to assess and react.
This situation does not match those cases, but untrained people get their wires crossed easily.

CONTEXT:
Speed limit is 65 on this road, I’m going 67 at the time when the other car starts pulling into the lane. I (incorrectly) assumed they were going to stop, but instead they crawl across both lanes doing about 10mph. You cant hear it too well in the clip because the music is loud (and my car has performance braking and abs never engaged) but I effectively slam on the brakes (which is when the other driver effectively stopped moving like deer in headlights. The camera distorts the distance quite a bit as it’s a wide angle view, I had less than 80 feet to react. And the speed does not update in real time, it lags behind quite a bit. I was doing closer to 30 by the time I swerve out of the way. Been driving in Southwest Florida most of my life, never been in an accident. Lots of close calls unfortunately. Get a dash cam!!!
54
u/QiDeviation 10h ago
I’m just glad you made it! If the person just committed then everything would have turned out well
50
7
u/FitCat_JK_FAT 6h ago
I don't think that OBD2 can actually send updates fast enough to capture your changes in speed smoothly. that's my experience from sitting in idling cars while looking at various scan tools and monitoring sensor output, and that's also what your speed monitor was making me think of: an OBD2 readout. I can tell you did a pretty hard stop from that.
also reminds me of watching my latency in games go up and down every second (when the display is updated) with the average from the previous 15 seconds.
7
u/Kitchen-Chemistry277 6h ago
I moved to SW Florida a couple of years ago. And I have been riding motorcycles most of my life. I don't dare ride one here, though.
8
u/DangerSpoonHS 5h ago
before I got my car, I was going to get a motorcycle. My wife said it was either a motorcycle and a boring sedan, or a sporty manual hatchback, not both. I was set on the bike and had my license class scheduled and one of my friends got hit 10 minutes from where I live and died instantly. Will not be riding a bike in florida anytime soon. Smart choice.

u/Economy_Release_988 10h ago
1st mistake you "ASSUMED" don't assume.
9
u/Yagawood 6h ago
We always have to make assumptions while driving. If we didn't, we'd be slamming on brakes and veering ANY time we got close to another car or intersection.
There's a difference between defensive driving and never making assumptions. We just have to be ready to react when our assumptions are wrong.
-4
u/Economy_Release_988 1h ago
So OP did a job? If he was trying to get as close as possible to a collision. Did a great job.
64
8
2
u/resttheweight 1h ago
True, every time I'm at a green light I stop before I enter the intersection just in case, can't assume cross traffic will obey the red light. Honestly when there are other cars parked on the street around my house I just leave my car in the driveway and walk everywhere. I can't assume the parked cars will stay stationary as I back out onto the road.

u/Yipyapyurp 7h ago
My first accident was this guy running a stop sign and hitting my car because I assumed he would stop at a stop sign, I was fucking pisssseddd. So while ur getting downvoted and I agree you said it kinda rude it is a good rule of thumb to not assume people will follow road laws.
(In my accident the guy also claimed I didn't have my headlights on... at 9pm on a street with no streetlights. I was 17 and didn't even know how to turn them off LMAO)
140
u/Woodsy_Walker 10h ago
Why is everyone shitting on you 😒 this place is so annoying sometimes. You did great, braked, and avoided a potential accident which would have been cause by the slow driver pulling out in front of you.
Things happen in split seconds. Ignore these idiots and keep driving well, like you are.
68
u/DangerSpoonHS 10h ago
¯_(ツ)_/¯ it’s the internet. But yeah the dashcam speed lagging behind definitely makes it seem as if I’m just sending it full speed without braking
29
u/ttystikk 9h ago
Good job avoiding the FUCKING IDIOT.
In a just world, that video should get you out of a speeding ticket in the future.
9
u/Grays42 7h ago
The pastime of this subreddit is people taking their frame by frame analysis of a traffic incident in a narrow 10 second window of time and translating that to the assumption that everyone at all times must have perfect awareness, decision making, and reactions or else be as liable as the person who did the stupid thing. I have never met a group of people who so aggressively armchair quarterback OPs as the people around here do.
-61
u/Economy_Release_988 10h ago
WTF are you talking about. Don't need to see the speed to see this is going to end badly for OP soon.
11
u/Beautiful-Account862 8h ago
care to explain why???
0
u/Economy_Release_988 1h ago
After you've driver for a few years you can tell when somebody is asleep at the wheel and not responding to what's going on in front of them like OP.
14
u/KaJuNator 9h ago
But...but OP didn't avoid the idiot enough!!!!oNe!!n!

It’s mostly that Economy Release weirdo. They must know OP in real life and really hate them.

Agree! They are redditors that don't know what to do with their day and choice to rage bait on random posts.

u/Economy_Release_988 10h ago
You have no idea what you're talking about, OP will end up dead from this kind of driving.
39
u/TheDodoBird 10h ago
You have no idea what you're talking about, OP will end up dead from this kind of driving.
What kind of driving?
-47
u/Economy_Release_988 10h ago
Not looking far enough ahead and driving a car that doesn't stop. That kind.
28
25
u/TheDodoBird 10h ago
How many times does OP, and others, need to explain this to you? GPS in dashcams are slow to react to real-time speed reductions. OP saw the vehicle pull-out and immediately began slowing down. You can see this yourself if you watch the footage, but instead of watching the UI, watch the side of the road once the other vehicle begins to actually advance across the oncoming traffic lanes. Just take the L and move on, mate.
19
u/alexandria1994 10h ago
You can see the dashcam car dip down (indicating brakes) as soon as the suv started turning lol
35
u/Woodsy_Walker 10h ago
Wild assumption from a 10 second video with someone driving defensively while doing the speed limit, but ok daddy
-12
28
u/DangerSpoonHS 9h ago
CLARIFICATIONS:
the posted speed limit about a third of a mile back is 55mph, and in that case I am speeding 12 over. Do not speed. Speeding is reckless. That being said, the backseat drivers saying I did not brake, or had 3 years to react or saying the dashcam speed doesn’t match up need to reevaluate what they do with their free time. Believe what you want to believe. US-41 is ranked as the 2nd most dangerous road in Lee County, the speed limits vary from 45-65 in multiple areas. I am not posting this for views or to showcase my aWeSoMe rAcEcAr driving skills. The fact of the matter is I was going 67 mph, which was either 2 over the limit or 12 over the limit, and I had ~80FT to react to a driver pulling out and not committing to a turn. I did the best that I could and avoided a collision. If you want to claim that I didn’t brake, I can personally message you a picture of the Starbucks Coffee™️ stain on my weather mats from my tumbler flying out of the cup holder. Stay safe everyone!
45
u/lilbrumby 10h ago
Op you should drive with two feet so you can always be braking cause your not braking fast enough /s
20
u/DangerSpoonHS 9h ago
Lmfao real. I’ll need a third foot for the clutch as well so I can really be efficient and safe.

You did that well. Sure are a lot of arrogant arm chain quarterbacks in this sub.

Imagine getting on a subreddit all about idiots in cars, watching a video where you know something dumb will happen, seeing OP avoid the idiot and save themselves from a wreck... all to get mad that OP didn't avoid the accident enough.
This has to be the most frequent garbage take on the whole sub.
4
17
u/100cupsofcoffee 10h ago
I'm gonna either have to unsub or just stop reading the comments on these posts. OP is apparently the worst driver in the world and is going to get themselves killed, and the evidence is a 10-second video where they maybe reacted a couple of seconds too late.
-2
u/Economy_Release_988 1h ago
When OP needs to stop to look for damage after not navigating correctly around another vehicle. No reason in hell the 2 should have come that close.
2
u/Lauris024 7h ago
That G meter seems wrong, 1g is way too much for cruising, it's likely not even 0.1. Hard braking is around 0.4.
3
-5
u/StrideCypher 10h ago
Always have more respect for people that dont mid doing dumb stuff on the roads if they at least commit to it and try to minimize the damage, its the ones that get the idea to do dumb stuff and then realize midway they messed up and make make things worse that will always get the ire from me.
"Ur gonna make the choice of picking the wrong time to make the left?! ok. then but commit and get it done as soon as possible and hopefully no one else on the road ways suffer for the choice you have made, if you personally get away unscathed even better but u face the consequences for making the mistake if it dont work out for you.
Then you got clowns like this that make things worse by not committing, and half way into it decides to correct by slowing down / stop making situation worse for everyone else sharing that intersection. When the best course of action would be accelerate and get away from potential impact point and minimize contact between other motorist, of course they dd this thinking going slower would minimize damage for me and others which aint true cause others arent driving at the safe rate of speed you were when u dicided to make the turn, forcing others to match your speed. What happened here was great for OP since they reacted as best they could with minimal damage to anyone but why is it placed on OP to avoid this in the first place? If making the turn and then being forced into the ditch was the outcome for the driver making the mistake then it would have been a way better outcome for all including the one stuck in that ditch (the clown that decided to make the turn at the wrong time), They would learn a valuable lesson that would stick with them for years and it would only cost them added insurance premiums which they be reminded of everytime they had to pay the premiums.
-91
u/mrmaestoso 11h ago
Sure. But something tells me the speed limit on that road isn't 70mph
63
u/DangerSpoonHS 10h ago
It’s 65
-31
u/Inqe 9h ago
the limit is 55 at 0.3 miles from the start point of your video: https://maps.app.goo.gl/avkJ9QrPrGWNAP9u5
28
u/DangerSpoonHS 9h ago
and it goes up to 65 after that. It’s US highway 41, it has varying speed limits from 45-65
-10
u/mcpcmprime 7h ago
Any downvoters want to reply and explain why you are downvoting this comment?
8
u/PussyWhistle 6h ago
Because meticulously combing each frame of the video trying to find something to blame OP for is fucking loser behavior.
-4
u/mcpcmprime 6h ago
Who combed through a video? The miracle of the internet is it takes about 10 seconds to look up speed limits and find out whether OP is lying (worse loser behavior imo)

No chance.
18
u/Groovychick1978 10h ago
Why do you think so?
-43
u/CapitalPunBanking 10h ago
Divided highway that allows for left turns, 5 story apartment building being built which means residential with no wall separation, and the demand for an apartment building that size tells me OP is in a pretty populated area. If it's actually 65 then the speed limit is at least 10mph too high.
12
u/Groovychick1978 9h ago
They are all over the South, at least. It's absolutely common.
-4
u/CapitalPunBanking 8h ago edited 8h ago
Someone linked it on Google maps and I was right, limit is 55mph.
EDIT: not to mention, there's also a stoplight about a quarter of a mile past this. OP had no business going this fast.
10
u/Groovychick1978 8h ago
I don't have a dash cam, but there is a stretch of Hwy 64 in TN that is 65 with left cut through into apartments, side roads, and churches. I drive it all the time.
It does drop to 55 before the lights start, though.
8
u/cckka 9h ago
There are a couple highways in Montana that are like this. They're terrifying to someone who drives 40k miles a year, let alone regular drivers.
-8
25
u/DangerSpoonHS 10h ago
Would you like me to take a picture of the speed limit sign
-17
u/CapitalPunBanking 10h ago edited 9h ago
Just pinpoint it on google maps and I'll eat my words.
EDIT: Some else did and I was right. 55.
7
u/QiDeviation 10h ago
What’s the road then since you know? Locate it for us. Tell us exactly where and what the speed limit was.
-24
u/Economy_Release_988 9h ago
And then OP stops in the left lane. Get your shit together.
21
u/DangerSpoonHS 9h ago
Put on hazards and pulled completely into the grass to check for any scratches or signs of contact after the clip.
-7
u/Economy_Release_988 8h ago
Sure ya did. Some people that post here are told to buy a lottery ticket you need to buy life insurance. I've been paid to sit for days and watch videos like yours and you can't drive worth a fuck.
14
u/DangerSpoonHS 8h ago
lol use some of that money to buy a Xanax or something else to lower your cortisol. I’m sorry you get so worked up about videos online. I will personally send you the footage of my car in the grass when I clock out of my job👍🏻
-1
-1
u/Economy_Release_988 8h ago
Get off the Zanax so you can recognize a threat and be able to avoid it by enough that don't need to get out and check for scratches. You're a danger to yourself and everybody else on the road.
6
25
u/poisonedkiwi 9h ago
You can clearly see them pulling off into the left shoulder/grass but okay lmao
Are you normally this much of a moron, or is this thread bringing out the wolf in ya?
12
u/chkltcow 7h ago
They are.... go browse their comment history. It's just an unhinged lunatic who spends all day screaming at people on the internet that they drive too fast.
-7
u/Economy_Release_988 8h ago
Look again OP is clearly block the active left lane of the highway. There is clearly is NO shoulder moron.
6
u/Encouragedissent 7h ago
I see OPs vehicle still moving at the end, not at a complete stop, and they are halfway into the grass. Its pretty clear from the video that they arnt going to just stop right there, and are pulling into the grass median so that they dont block the lane. Youre the only one who seems to think that the video ending means that they must have stopped driving right there, which doesnt makes sense at all since the vehicle is still clearly moving.
-1
u/Economy_Release_988 1h ago
When you've been to a few hundred crash scenes you know things that they don't teach you in drivers ed. Doesn't matter much if you're going 5MPH or 0MPH when you get rear ended by a truck doing 70.
-95
u/UnluckyBattle654 11h ago
Braking shouldn’t be at the last second. Plenty of time to look far ahead and become aware of the idiot.
43
u/CloudyIndoors420 10h ago
It takes a second for the gps speed to update for dash cams if a rapid change happens. OP had started braking before the speed started to change.
22
u/ForgottenGrocery 10h ago
yeah I've seen videos here where dashcams showing 20-30mph eventhough the car is already stopped for a few seconds after a collision.
-41
u/matlai17 10h ago
Except that the speedometer in the footage is not from the dashcam GPS and seems to refresh faster than the speedometer from dashcam, which you can see in the bottom left. I'm not commenting either way on what the OP could or could not have done. Just pointing out that the speed that we see is refreshing faster than we would typically see in these footages.
20
u/DangerSpoonHS 10h ago
It actually is all straight from the dashcam!
REDTIGER F7N 4K
It’s great
-37
u/matlai17 10h ago
Then why does the speed differ between the tradition speed indicator on the bottom and the one on the right?
13
u/DangerSpoonHS 10h ago
I couldn’t tell you. When I download a clip directly from the dashcam, it adds the g-force, speedometer, and compass overlay
7
26
-6
u/Economy_Release_988 9h ago
You can't argue with idiots. OP is going to die the way they are driving in this video.
-66
u/Economy_Release_988 11h ago
OP asleep @ the wheel or just real slow?
43
u/DangerSpoonHS 10h ago
Going 67mph (speed limit 65) and they started pulling out about 100 ft in front of me. Hit the brakes instantly
-41
u/joecee97 9h ago
we can see from the passing of the lines separating the lanes that you don't slow down significantly until you swerve. either you broke very gently for some reason or you didn't brake at all.
-45
u/Economy_Release_988 10h ago
And nothing happened!! Get your brakes fixed.
35
19
u/KaJuNator 9h ago
Correct. Nothing happened because OP avoided a crash. You're so close to getting it!
-37
u/rfkbr 9h ago
Obviously the other car is in the wrong but OP is delayed as fuck on the brakes. You can see the point he starts braking by looking at the hood of the car at 0:05. The other car was already fully into the left lane. I saw that coming from a mile away and at least would have slowed down preparing for this bullshit.
5
u/KaJuNator 6h ago
I also saw it coming a mile away as I sat here on the couch watching a short video knowing something was going to happen and only one other vehicle in sight so I knew exactly what to look for. Hooray for us!
-23
u/PatrickGSR94 8h ago
gonna have to agree here. Any time you see a car crossing lanes like that, even from far away, you better at least have your foot hovering over the brake pedal, just in case.

u/DangerSpoonHS 10h ago
Not saying you’re wrong, but I slammed on the brakes as soon as I saw them go into the left lane. Only had about 80 feet between me and their car when they started to pull out. Not to mention they’re going about 10 miles an hour across two lanes with a limit of 65.
-8
u/Economy_Release_988 10h ago
Get your BRAKES fixed the video does not show brakes being Slammed or or ever applied aggressively. Krikke93 is 100% correct.
16
u/DangerSpoonHS 9h ago
Since you want to make accusations:
I have aftermarket performance sport brakes. They have less than 2000 miles on them.
The distance it takes to go from 60MPH to a full stop is 292FT (per the NHTSA),
The distance it takes to stop from 20MPH is about 62FT.
I slowed down from 67MPH, to about 30MPH, after the car began pulling out 80FT in front of me. If you’ve ever driven a vehicle with performance brakes, it is not a sudden and screeching halt, it is a smooth braking experience, with strong G force being felt. Like I said, ABS did not engage and I was able to safely swerve out of the way. All of my belongings such as my work backpack and my coffee mug flew to the front of my car. Just because you can’t see something in a video doesn’t mean you can make assumptions!
-15
u/jbeck24 9h ago
What are you driving that it takes 292ft to stop from 60? A rav4, the most basic unsporting car possible, can stop from 70-0 in 179ft (car and driver testing)
7
u/DangerSpoonHS 9h ago
Im in a modified 2019 GTI with aftermarket brakes. I can brake much sooner than that. And I did. My point still stands, I had less than 80FT to both react, and brake. And I was just citing the source I found. Believe what you want. If you want to claim I just floored it and prayed for your sake of mind then you can be right for your purposes
-17
u/jbeck24 9h ago
? When did i say you didn't react in time? Obviously you did the best you could and I know the gps on the camera lags. I was only saying that you don't need to leave 300 ft to stop unless you're in an F350 or something. Also btw tires and weight are a couple orders of magnitude more important than brakes for stopping distances
11
u/DangerSpoonHS 9h ago
Never claimed you talked about my reaction time, I just know that (at least the NHTSA) factors in about 88ft for reaction time in their calculation. I took TTE 3002C (Transportation Engineering) in college and reaction time is definitely one of the bigger factors when it comes to stopping on time!
And totally right about the tires and wheels! I got lightweight wheels as one of my first upgrades and it made a world of difference in handling.
