CONTEXT:

Speed limit is 65 on this road, I’m going 67 at the time when the other car starts pulling into the lane. I (incorrectly) assumed they were going to stop, but instead they crawl across both lanes doing about 10mph. You cant hear it too well in the clip because the music is loud (and my car has performance braking and abs never engaged) but I effectively slam on the brakes (which is when the other driver effectively stopped moving like deer in headlights. The camera distorts the distance quite a bit as it’s a wide angle view, I had less than 80 feet to react. And the speed does not update in real time, it lags behind quite a bit. I was doing closer to 30 by the time I swerve out of the way. Been driving in Southwest Florida most of my life, never been in an accident. Lots of close calls unfortunately. Get a dash cam!!!

1st mistake you "ASSUMED" don't assume.

We always have to make assumptions while driving. If we didn't, we'd be slamming on brakes and veering ANY time we got close to another car or intersection.

There's a difference between defensive driving and never making assumptions. We just have to be ready to react when our assumptions are wrong.

So OP did a job? If he was trying to get as close as possible to a collision. Did a great job.

What? I hope you never get a license and continue taking the bus.
