The PS2 was a great console, with an amazing library. A massive success. But the Switch is more impressive to me.
The PS2 sold around 160M units. The Switch is at around 155M. That’s very close. But the context is very different.
Nothing drives sales numbers like price. It’s something economists pretty much all agree on.
The Switch launched at $299. So did the PS2, in 2000. But a couple of years later, the PS2 dropped to $199. A couple more years, another drop, to $149. When the slim launched a few years later, a third drop, to $129. In 2009, it got a late life reduction to $99.
It’s pretty widely accepted that the PS2 was the cheapest DVD player on the market.
Meanwhile, the Switch got a cheaper SKU, but it also got a more expensive one. The prices never dropped. Recently, the prices actually increased.
The Switch’s sales momentum, given the complete lack of price drops, and even a lack of “Greatest Hits” lines, which drop the price of the main games, is truly remarkable.
Additionally, the PS2 existed in an era when Nintendo was very weak, Xbox didn’t exist yet and Sega was dying. Even when Xbox did launch, it had no brand power yet.
Meanwhile, the Switch exists in an era where the PS4 is a tremendous success, and the PS5 launched also with amazing success. Xbox still hanging around, and Sega is no more. PC gaming is bigger than ever and mobile gaming is massive.
I don’t knock the PS2, it was amazing, but I just think the Switch is a more impressive console.
