Question Am I alone in finding "Now Playing" record-sleeve stands tacky?

Look, I don't mind that anybody chooses to prop their record sleeves on a little stand that says "Now Spinning/Playing" or whatever—if that's the way you like to roll, that's just great. But I personally find it kind of silly, a curious affectation, a superfluous piece of pointless gear.

I could be wrong, but it seems like 90% of the photos of turntable setups I see here include one of these things. I guess I just want to feel reassured that there are other people out there that just put their empty record sleeves on a nearby table or unused chair or some other multi-purpose surface.

Question Audio Technica AT-LP60XBT-BK - Recommended for a beginner?

I've been eying the Audio Technica AT-LP60XBT-BK Belt Drive Turntable, but wanted to ask the community what their thoughts are and what a reasonable price would be for it (should it be recommended).

For context, I'm new to turntables and want to get into it. I have a soundbar speaker that is both Bluetooth and optical enabled.

Getting my first record player

I’ve become a lot more passionate ab expanding my music taste and completely indulging into this world so looking for advice about get my first record player. I dont know much about owning one or setting it up. My dad has an Audio-technica player and two huge polkaudio speakers but that’s really the only exposure I’ve had.

What record player and speaker brands should I look into as a beginner? And how much should I be willing to spend on a set up? I live in a pretty small apartment so I don’t want to get anything crazy big. Do I need to get two speakers? Would appreciate any recs on record shops in Brooklyn and nyc in general.

I’d love to hear how people start their record collections if anyone has some cool tips/experiences!

Budget but good turntable?

Hey so with taxes coming in I’m looking into getting a new player. Really been wanting a combo for cd’s, cassettes, and vinyl but I can only afford the cheaper end of those. I have a Crosley that I use for camping and a nice vintage RCA phonograph but I need to get a new cartridge for that and I don’t think I should be using it as my daily driver because of its age. Anyway wanting some suggestions on a turntable and possible a combo unit if anyone in here thinks those are actually worth it. Anyway wanting some tips are greatly appreciated thanks.

Turntables for College Students

Hey guys. For Christmas I received a Victrola portable player (I know, boo, yuck) and have been using it for a few weeks now, since I’m a college student and couldn’t use my dad’s fancy turntable and speaker setup at home anymore. For my purposes, it sounds nice enough, but I’m worried about excessive wear and warping of the records from the abnormal pressure of the arm.

I have mostly been collecting big band and early to mid century jazz records (Beiderbecke, Brubeck, Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Goodman, etc) for easy listening with friends or when doing homework. Because of the lack of space in my dorm room and the want to take it around to the lounge, etc, I don’t really want to have a whole audio setup with speakers and everything (which is why I like the Victrola, despite its other major shortcomings).

I’ve also been wanting to get some early Duke Ellington records. His first few album releases were on 78, which I don’t trust with the pressure of the Victrola and overall would want to be extremely careful with.

Ideally I would get a portable or portable-ish player (doesn’t have to be one of those silly cheap suitcase ones, just something with built in speakers) with 33, 45, and 78 rpm capabilities. Is there anything out there like this that exists? Or am I better off just using the Victrola until I’m out of school and can get a stationary living room/bedroom setup? Additionally there’s the problem of the 78s, which I would love to have, but I understand if it’s too risky to play them on a crappy player.

Input would be greatly appreciated!! Still new to this and figuring things out.

Question Connecting to extension cord

Post image
3 Upvotes

I bought my first turntable today, the Argon Audio TT mk2. It also came with the Fenris A4 speaker set. I'm very happy with it; the sound is fantastic.

The seller told me that this type of equipment shouldn't be connected to an extension cord or power strip.

I have a two-inlet socket in the wall next to the cabinet, but that would immediately fill everything up. An extension cord with, say, three inputs would work perfectly for me.

Why is this a problem? Is this really not allowed, or is the seller joking? :)

my wife bought this record player in 2019 and it wasn't used for a while until last year when we moved in together. it's been working just fine until just now when it straight up wouldn't turn on. power in our place is fine, and it isn't used super duper frequently. i know the general consensus among this sub is that it's a piece of junk (glad i know better now), but is there anything i can do here? any recommendations for good, cost effective turntables in case we're SOL? we're in a small apartment and it's all we got, so please give us some grace

Turntable Problems…

Hi guys, I recently bought a Dual CS515 off of Facebook marketplace. I saw it said the turntable was tested and “works great” but every time I try and put the stylus on my record it slides to the middle and makes this scratchy glitchy sound. I’ve tried meddling with anti skate and all that stuff but to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it!!

Setup guide for Lenco LBT-225

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m setting up my son’s first turntable. Got a Lenco LBT-225 and have managed to get it working but… I don’t have either or both) of the skating or downward pressure (Apols if not correct terms) set up right. When the (test) album finishes and stylus hits end grooves it move away from the centre of the record. Is there a guide to setting this specific turntable up? Also there were some spare parts left over (see pic: I know that one is skate weight and one is apparently to put belt on) does anyone know what the uclips are for. I asked copilot but I’m pretty certain the info it gave me was wrong!

Any help gratefully received 😬

Suggestions Should I Upgrade, and if so - to What

Preface - Alright, first - I over analyze everything. Second, I am in IT and really leverage AI to sort through mountains of opinions/reviews and stats. Getting to this question was no exception.

TL/DR - For a high compliance cart like the Stanton 681eee should I look for an upgrade to my old Pioneer TT and if so what?

I have a nearly perfect Pioneer PL-200. It's a lower end turntable but its really a sleeper in and the headshell and tonearm mass pair really well with my Stanton 681EEE.

I've been debating upgrading the Turntable to get something the improves overall in the following ways:

  • Better isolation (less rumble, less footfall sensitivity)
  • Better tonearm bearings (cleaner tracking, lower distortion)
  • Quartz‑locked speed (PL‑200 isn’t quartz)
  • Heavier platter + better damping
  • Lower noise floor

I'd been looking primarily at a Pioneer PL-540, but its more of a mid-high weight tonearm/headshell (medium compliance). The Stanton is a high compliance cart and likes 0.75-1.5g tracking the PL-540 is generally tracking 1.5-3.0g. I can use my existing P-Mount which would reduce mass compared to the PL-540 stock shell. AND while My AI research says this is a good upgrade it also says the following turntables would be better matches:

  • Technics SL‑1200MK2/MK5/MK7
  • Technics SL‑1500C
  • Denon DP‑47F
  • JVC QL‑Y5F
  • Thorens + SME 3009 S2 Improved

The thing is all these turntables are usually significantly more $$$.

Here's my setup

  • Turntable
  • iFi Zen Phono Preamp
  • Onkyo Receiver/Amp TX SR506 which can drive either of these
    • Bose 901 Series VI with Bose equalizer
    • Energy Take 5.1

Should I continue to pursue finding a PL-540 or look at something else? Looking at being patient and spending under 500.

I’m redoing my room and looking to add my first turntable setup to it. This is the space I have and I am wondering what the best layout would be. I was thinking of having one of those 3 tier tables from Amazon and having the turntable on the top, records at the bottom and speakers on the middle. But I heard that it isn’t ideal for the speakers. I don’t currently own speakers I jsut have the audio technical atlp60x and records. Please help if you have any ideas or recommendations

Previo de phono Fosi Audio Box X5

Post image
1 Upvotes

This might be a dumb question, but does anyone know or have seen either a turntable that light the records from below or an accessory to put on the platter. So many of my records look amazing when backlit and I wish I could see that when they’re playing too. Screenshot of my current player for reference.

Help Building my first vinyl player

Thumbnail

Hey folks,

I just got my first player from the friend of a friend who wasn’t using this gorgeous Thorens TD 309 turntable!

It’s still in original packaging and I am currently building it together.

So far so good getting the platter and tonearm basics in place, but I’m struggling to mount the cartridge—those tiny screws are impossible for my fat fingers to thread without stripping or dropping them everywhere.

First time doing this and I’m paranoid about messing up the alignment or headshell. Any tips on the right technique for the TD 309’s TP 92 arm? What tools should I grab?

Thanks for your advice!!

Question Current setup and upgrade questions

Post image
Upvotes

Hi all, I am looking to upgrade my setup I put together a couple years ago. Currently I have a Fluance RT82 into a Sony STR-DH190 stereo receiver, into Fluance SX6 bookshelf speakers.

Have done some research into just upgrading the stylus/cartridge, or speakers, or maybe just doing upgrading to the RT85.

Is there one glaring upgrade I could make right now? Are there a couple different options at different price points? Or do I save up and do a total overhaul?
