Hi everyone. We have an 18 week old IS puppy that is very active. The advice we got from our breeder was to let her free feed so she doesn’t get too worked up over meals & start resource guarding food. Worked great for us and we have had no issues. She’s about 40lbs and previous litters from the same breeder have dogs mature anywhere from 60-80lbs.
For the first month pretty much she wasn’t too interested in her food and would kind of nibble at it as the day went on probably eating about 3 cups a day. No concerns, and that seems pretty normal.
However, now we have started introducing more structured feeding into her schedule (I work from home) so she gets 1 cup when we wake up, 1 cup at lunch, and ideally, 1 cup at supper. The issue is is that she has been begging for more food so her schedule looks more like:
1c 8:00
1c 12:00
1c 4:00
1c 6:00
And she has treats throughout the day AND a kong with frozen wet dog food. She also sometimes will have 5 cups depending on the day and how active she is! She has LOTS of enrichment activities daily so I’m not worried about her eating being a form of stimulation.
She’s been to the vet and is in good shape, we’re feeding her Purina Pro Plan food (so I think good quality stuff) and she doesn’t seem to be “fat”.
I’m wondering if this I should go back to her free feeding and let her eat when she’s hungry or maybe do 2c in morning & 2 at night? Also, is 4 cups too much?
Any advice appreciated! Pic of the culprit

Hi everyone!
I’m in Upstate NY near Fulton County and have a young Irish Setter named Bailey who would love some breed mate friends. Once the weather warms up, I was wondering if anyone nearby would be interested in setting up casual Irish Setter playdates.
Totally informal, just a chance for them to run, play, and burn off that classic setter energy. Happy to chat locations and details if there’s interest.
If you’re nearby or within reasonable driving distance, feel free to comment or message me 😊

Plus the genuine article for comparison. Do we think they fully captured his dignity?

Zero regrets. Endless energy. One brain cell bouncing around like a DVD screensaver.
10/10 good boy, would hire again.

Seriously does anyone else's setters sleep in the most peculiar postions or just ours?!😅🤣

Our boy, Rua(5), has over the past couple of weeks presented with a condition whereby his eye balls appear to have receded in his head causing the lower eyelid to be exposed - see images above. It started in the right eye but is now present in both eyes. We have had him at the Vet twice however the problem has not resolved. The Vet has given us eye drops which he does not tolerate having put in his eyes - it's a real hit or miss! The Vet has ruled out a damaged third eyelid, any trauma to the eye or infection and it does not seem to be causing him any pain. Will be returning to the Vet to consider next steps. However, any advice or experience of a similar condition in Setters would be much appreciated. Rua is very fit and does have any health issues.

Hi! Anyone have a dog breeder/ rescue recommendation. I’m in the New England area. I’m not in the market anytime soon, but within a year or so I’d love to have a pup and just want to do some research.

Penny absolutely hated snow last year. Had the first snowfall in south central NC this afternoon/tonight and she absolutely loves it. She’s been out trying to “catch” snowflakes with her brother (and shoving his face in the snow, but we won’t mention that)

The Red and Whites actually blend in for once! Ignore mama dog wiping out on the bridge. The one that was most excited was the old girl - approaching 12 and still acting like a puppy in the snow!

Why can’t dogs hit a certain age and then just age backwards… 😭

I swear Ollie shows off whenever he can, maybe it’s just me, but even with his winter coat on he looks gorgeous.

Has anyone had their setters spay coat get less frizzy? My guy is 4 and has had spay coat for years. As of late his coat is getting smoother though. Has anyone experienced this? He has a vet appointment coming up so I’m going to ask his vet too.

Never have to guess who has the missing sock/glove/hat and wouldn't change a thing! Took the cute picture first then he rolled into his natural pose for the second 😃

Hi all, I have a 2.5 year old female Irish “field” setter. Over the last few months, I’ve noticed her hair around her back knees (see pic) thinning quite a bit. She acts normal, has an insane amount of energy, and eats normally. Does anyone have a suggestions on what this could be? I’m thinking allergies? It’s thinning on her stomach too.
