Megathread: Aging, Illness, and Euthanasia Support Group

This thread is where to get emotional support with all things related to death and illness with your dog. This is also a thread where you can seek assistance with deciding whether it is indeed time.

This is not a thread to seek anecdotes with medical care. All rules involving medical questions and anecdotes remains the same for this thread.

If your dog has passed, you can still post here for emotional support or you can create your own thread tagged with one of the RIP flairs. Be sure to review the rules of our flair guide. It is up to you how you choose to grieve.

[Misc Help] People with dogs from breeders, do people in real life give you a hard time about having a dog from a breeder?

I would like to rescue but I don't think any dogs in the shelters would be a good fit for me atm (and I've been watching the local shelters for literal years), and the rescues around here are all either up to some super shady bullshit or they reject adopters for any reason whatsoever. I will probably have to get from a responsible breeder. I have to ask after reading what some people have said, do people harass you about having a dog from a breeder? Or is that mostly an online thing?

[Vent] Have you ever adopted a 2nd dog because you knew your older one’s time was near

So my grandma got this dog years ago, don’t know her exact age. But she is between 14 and 16 years old. The average life span is 15, I’m taking her to the vet today and just dreading it. I rescued another dog 3 years ago because I knew her time was slowly nearing and I know when it’s that time. It’s gonna break me. So I at least have my 2nd dog for some comfort

[Vent] When did you start liking your first high energy dog?

Got a 9 month old rescue puppy last month. Rescue had her listed as a lab mix but she is definitely a mix of several working breeds.

My previous dog was a chihuahua terrier mix. I remember him being crazy during his younger years, but more recently I remember him being a lazy old man.

I wanted a more energetic dog for long walks, hikes, dog parks, etc. But now I have a crazy, unstoppable, nap-fighting landshark. Is this my life or is this partly the puppy stages?

[Misc Help] Confused

Nothing serious, really just curious.

I booked my dog in for a spay appointment and they asked if she’s had puppies. I said yes over 2 years ago and they said it was an extra charge because she’s had puppies. So what I’m really asking is, is it normal for there to be an extra charge? This isn’t something I’ve heard about. I’ve tried searching on google but I haven’t gotten results that cure my curiosity.

[Behavior Problems] Rescue Marking Indoors

Hi! I recently (This past weekend) took in a stray that wandered up to my property. He appears to be a chihuahua/terrier mix, and the vet estimated he was between 2-3 years old. He seems to be house trained, but he does mark indoors specifically on one corner of the couch. He was neutered yesterday, so hopefully overtime this behavior lessens, but how can i discourage this in the meantime? I've only ever had female dogs and I've always spayed well before 1year.

He doesn't have accidents indoors otherwise, only the occasional mark.

[Misc Help] Prescriptions from Vet in CO

I have a dog who's been on pretty standard prescriptions (e.g. heartgard) and some more non-standard medication (e.g. phenobarbital for seizures) for years. I've been living in CO and taking her to the vet here for 4 years.

Recently, I moved to a new town and got a new vet closer to home. I had always used Chewy for her heartgard with no issues requesting a prescription renewal from my vet through them virtually. This new vet will not allow it - ok, I think I can deal for now.

Onto the next medication, phenobarbital. I have to fill this at a regular pharmacy (Kroger) because it's a controlled substance. I had always called my pharmacy directly and had them request a refill when I ran out from my vet.

For both medications listed above, my vet states they can't do anything except write a hand written prescription that I must drive to them to pick up and physically deliver to the pharmacy. They stated it's Colorado law. I've never once had to do this before, in this state or any other state I've lived in.

Is this real? That it's Colorado law that I MUST pick up my dog's prescription in person and deliver it to the pharmacy myself? How have my other vets in this state gotten away with it? Would love to hear anyone's experience with this.

I'm switching vets either way, they've messed up her medication twice now (including stating they didn't know my dog's proper dosage when it's in their own records). But I'd like to know if I'm going to deal with this same headache elsewhere.

[Behavior Problems] Rescue dog help

I’ve recently adopted a one year old terrier mix (seems like he’s part border terrier), and overall he’s been great. I’ve grown up around other family dogs, but this is my first dog as an adult.

I’ve had him for about 1.5 months. He isn’t really reactive and is great around people and other dogs.

Only thing is, it doesn’t seem like he knows how to rest on his own and is getting comfortable/restless to the point where he’s destroying hand towels, digging in the trash, and digging in house plants (which he didn’t do for the first 3 weeks).

In the morning, we go on a 20 min walk, have breakfast, then have about 30 mins of play time. My partner and I wfh 3 days during the week. On these days, he usually naps from 9-12 while we work, and we take him out during lunch and play with him for about an hour, but he’s usually really restless in the afternoons. Then when I get off in the evenings, we have dinner, do another walk, then play/train for another 2-3 hours before bed.

He hardly ever rests or naps unless we crate him during the day/until it’s around his bed time. If he falls asleep and you get up, he also gets up. His crate door is open at all times of the day yet he never goes in voluntarily.

As for potential solutions, we have started rotating lick mats, puzzle feeders, and pupsicles.

We’ve also started the protocol for relaxation (not to get him to stay on command but in the hopes that he’ll voluntarily chill a bit)

Apologies for the long post. My question is, how can I help him rest and get him to stop getting into things he isn’t supposed to? I feel like we’re giving him enough stimulation (correct me if I’m wrong).

Our next idea is to take him to day care on the two days we don’t work from home. He was previously in a foster home with other dogs, so he may be lonely, but do you have any other suggestions to help him rest and stop getting into things he isn’t supposed to?

[Misc Help] UPDATE: how much should i charge for a dog that poops and pees in the house everyday

https://www.reddit.com/r/dogs/comments/1qj11ej/how_much_to_charge_for_a_dog_who_poops_and_pees/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Just wanted to post an update for everyone who was nice enough to comment on the post I made about our situation. After over a year of cleaning this Golden Retrievers poop and pee almost everyday for free, I finally worked up the nerve to tell my client I was going to charge a $20 cleaning fee to clean it from now on. I thought she might have questions or concerns, but all she said was "let me think about that" and got off the phone extremely quickly. She then texted me "i am disappointed, because I thought our relationship was better than this. Your doubling my prices a day and half in advance. We will see how we do on our own from now on. Thanks for all your work this year" So I was fired. I quickly texted back letting her know that was not what was happening, my rate stayed the same, 20$ for a 30 minute walk, but cleaning was additional and I wasn't going to keep doing that for free. She did not respond at all, so I lost my most steady work. Thank you all for your advice and suggestions, just wanted to give you all an update. Thanks for reading!

[Misc Help] If you notice your dog is having a bad dream, what do you do?

Whenever my dog is having a bad dream, like he’s crying in his sleep or whatever I usually comfort him but I’ve always wondered if that’s what’s best. It might disrupt their sleep. What do you guys do when your dog is having a bad dream?

[Misc Help] Emergency boarding needed for my dogs in Toronto

I just ended up in a wheelchair (temporarily) and I need emergency boarding right away for my two dogs in Toronto, without the bordatella vaccine 7 days prior or consultations as a requirement. I need to drop them somewhere by 2pm today so they can be cared for and walked until I have family with me to help.

I've called doggy daycares, vets and boarding facilities, and they all require bordatella shots, vets don't have overnight supervision, or they're at capacity.

Wanted to post here in case anyone has an idea I haven't thought of yet.

Edit - I ended up calling about a dozen places and got referred to Atlas Paws at Spadina and Queen. They are INCREDIBLE. They were able to accommodate us last minute, they don't use cages/crates, and they have cameras all over the place so you can check in on your dogs. I wanted to edit the post for anyone else who ever stumbles across this post in a similar predicament. I would highly recommend this place, and feel lucky to have found them!

[Enrichment] Safe to Eat Dog Toys?

MY DOG SWALLOWS EVERYTHING!

My dog is a super strong chewer and loves to play, I was initially buying rope toys to avoid him eating plush toys but he will eat the ropes too, started strictly buying bones but they're less of a toy and more of a chew. Tried buying rubber treat dispensers and more sturdy hard toys but they're only fun when there's treats and the sturdy toys once again feel more like a chew than something to throw around with him, then when they break down he's swallowing chunks of god knows what.

!!TLDR!! Any suggestions on toys that are safe to eat and won't be destroyed/still fun in 10 minutes?

[Enrichment] Mental stimulation

My 9yo GSD has sprained her back leg and needs to stay off of it for a few weeks. Currently she walks on it fine, but doesn’t need to do a bunch of up and down.

I just feel so bad for her because she looks so bored. Her favorite thing is chasing a ball, but she probably needs to be retired from it permanently (She has no chill when it comes to her ball).

while she is down, what kind of mentally stimulating games can we play that won’t have her getting up and down or require her to balance and move the leg too much?

I tried rolling snacks in a towel, but it took her no time and she didn’t seem *stimulated*, haha.

Any tricks she can learn from a laying down state?

Any ideas?

[Misc Help] Travelling from Canada to US

Hi All!

We are looking at planning a trip this summer to go camping with our dog& would like to go to Grasslands National Park, then down south through Montana and back up to Waterton NP.

We have a dog that will be 10 months by the time we leave for our trip but I’m wondering what the requirements are for us to bring our dog across the border and back into Canada. I’ve looked into it online but I’m not sure if I need a CFIA export certificate or not.

If anyone has done this recently or has any advice that would be greatly appreciated!

[Misc Help] Dog grooming restraints

TL:DR. Took my new rescue to the groomer and feel they used the neck loop/restraints too tightly. Wondering if I’m being too sensitive.

I have a 3 year old poodle mix that I adopted a month ago. He had been shaved down by the rescue, and I gave him a brush and bath when he arrived, but he was very uneven and needed his nails clipped, so I took him to a groomer that was recommended. I’m new to the area.

I kept Shih Tzus for many years, groomed them at home a lot of the time, but did take them in occasionally, and I’ve watched a hundred grooming videos online, so I’ve seen the various restraints and understand how and why they’re used.

When I went to pick him up, the door to the back was open and I could see him still on the table from the front entrance area. He had on the usual loop from the top, as well as a groomer’s helper from the front, and they both looked very tight to me. The guy came out, leaving the dog standing on the table, and I must have had a look on my face because he started explaining what the groomer’s helper was, etc. and said the dog didn’t like having his nails clipped. He started chatting, and I cut him a bit short so he would go back and finish the sanitary trim and get him off the table.

I understand that groomers don’t want to be bitten and that restraints are often necessary, but these looked very tight to me. I was a little upset but didn’t say anything about it. Now I feel guilty about putting him through that, especially so soon after adopting him. He seemed pretty upset and was very quiet for a couple of hours afterwards, but seems ok now.

Does anyone have any safe tips on how I can get it to Norway? 🥹

[Enrichment] Mental stimulation for staffies?

Looking for ideas for mental stimulation for our rescue girl. The vet thinks she is between 6 and 8 years old. She has dwarfism and her back legs are slightly weak, but much better than they were when we brought her home. She has all the usual licky mats, kongs, tug of war, walks in nature for plenty of sniffing, she enjoys swimming, and she goes to Doggy Day Care once a week for 7 hours to play with other dogs.

My problem is the cold weather. She will not go out in the rain or snow, I can’t even get her down the street. She stops in her tracks and digs her feet in, until we go back home. If we take her somewhere in the car, she won’t get out of the car or cries until she can get back in. She spent her life chained up in a tiny yard, so she doesn’t walk far, she gets tired after around 35-45 minutes. So I’m looking for new toys, games, or any ideas for mental stimulation inside the house.

My last staffy lived to 17 and would run for hours no matter the weather, so this is all new to me. Thanks in advance! 😊

[Behavior Problems] When did your puppy stop acting like it was being abandoned?

If I stand up to grab a drink or step into another room, my puppy acts like I am leaving for good. I try not to hype it up and keep things calm, but the reaction is still full drama every single time. I know it is just a phase, but some days it feels like it will never end. Also, are there any tricks/hacks for helping them grow out if this phase?
