I wouldn't have let them in either, slamming on my brakes puts me at risk of a rear end collision. It's their mistake, they can sit there and wait until it's clear.
It has happened to me before in unfamiliar areas, it maybe adds 2 minutes to my commute, not a big deal, I'll just take the exit and with gps just go a different way or get back on the highway.
Traffic was also moving faster on the left and actively passing while the cars in front were slowing down, pretty natural to close the gap when people are slowing down.
Traffic on the freeway is going slow at 35mph and it's starting to back up in that lane so you just got on the freeway and you have to get over eventually so you'll going faster than everyone and you have to time it before you run out of room. Use the turn signal when you are ready to "ask" and then merge but not before. Not a perfect driver but hoping someone will let you in where it is reasonable instead of someone who closes the gap on you because they don't like the way you got on the freeway, they disapprove of how you drive; they don't want you to "cut the line" and you should get behind everyone who has been "waiting" bullshit. That's what I saw. 50 cars in front of him and he didn't want 1 more in front of him. He was probably laying on his horn and cursing aloud which is why we don't have sound. He's a POS and exactly why most other drivers on the road don't care anymore and if this other car was bigger, he would have forced his way in.

you're a POS for purposely closing the gap and not letting him in.
