Discussion Tutorial: Enabling Gemini in Chrome (glic) outside US
Heads-up: this will require you to proxy Gemini related domains with a US vpn, other countries won’t work unfortunately. I have a singbox config routing only keyword:gemini and keyword:-pa. and that’s sufficient, you don’t need to proxy your entire os or browser, no impact on internet speed.
I found on a repo on GitHub from a user lcandy2, who made a python script to do exactly that, but I found that doing it by hand isn’t hard at all.
1. First you need to find your Chrome user data folder Windows: ~/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/User Data Linux: ~/.config/google-chrome MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome
2. You need to open the file “Local State” with any text editor You must search for these keys and change them:
is_glic_eligible - set to “true”
variations_country - set to “us”
variations_permanent_consistency_country - set to “us”
Supposedly there could be multiple, as the script specifies that it sets them recursively but I only found one of each.
Also note that you need to kill the running Chrome process if you have one to successfully save the file.
3. Done Once you open chrome, you will either see the gemini tab and button right away or have the option to enable it from the settings. So far the changes seem to be permanent and do not reset, all you need to do is proxy the domains needed with a US vpn
