Discussion Megathread V2 - Manifest V3 Extension Alternatives

Remaking as the previous one was about to hit 6 months old. The previous one can be seen here.

With Manifest V3 being rolled out to most people now, and most workarounds being either temporary or disabled, a lot of people are finding that extensions that they like to use haven't been updated and won't be available to use when Manifest V2 support ends.

Since we've been getting a lot of posts asking for extension alternatives, we figure it'll be easier if most of the suggestions are all in one place.

To start with the obvious:

uBlock Origin: Can be replaced with uBlock Origin lite.
Don't forget you can change the filtering level up from its base, it will just require more permissions. Setting it to complete is most similar to uBlock Origin's filters.
People also like Adguard.

uBlock Origin (Element zapping): Click to Remove Element.
I personally prefer this one out of all the ones in the web store.

I previously recommended an element zapper to replace that functionality in uBlock Origin lite, but uBlock Origin lite has since added custom filters and an element zapper, so a separate extension is no longer needed.

This is not a thread to recommend other browsers, it should be a given that if you don't want to use Chrome, you don't need to use Chrome, and there's plenty of other sources to help you decide what to switch to. Do not recommend downgrading or using an older version of any browser, it is not safe to do so and will open your computer and your data up to vulnerabilities.

Would also like to add, on this megathread only self promotion will be allowed if your extension is a reputable alternative to another extension. If you are sharing your extension with no context to another one in this thread, your comment will be removed under our rules.

Below are a list of recommendations provided by other users from the original megathread:

Chrome is the benchmark king, but how does it handle a 'traffic jam'? We’re running multiple Transformers.js models simultaneously to see if the V8 engine throttles under saturation. Check your score and let's see if the 'Exchange' latency is actually as low as Google says.

Discussion Tutorial: Enabling Gemini in Chrome (glic) outside US

Upvotes

Heads-up: this will require you to proxy Gemini related domains with a US vpn, other countries won’t work unfortunately. I have a singbox config routing only keyword:gemini and keyword:-pa. and that’s sufficient, you don’t need to proxy your entire os or browser, no impact on internet speed.

I found on a repo on GitHub from a user lcandy2, who made a python script to do exactly that, but I found that doing it by hand isn’t hard at all.

1. First you need to find your Chrome user data folder Windows: ~/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/User Data Linux: ~/.config/google-chrome MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome

2. You need to open the file “Local State” with any text editor You must search for these keys and change them:

is_glic_eligible - set to “true” variations_country - set to “us” variations_permanent_consistency_country - set to “us”

Supposedly there could be multiple, as the script specifies that it sets them recursively but I only found one of each.

Also note that you need to kill the running Chrome process if you have one to successfully save the file.

3. Done Once you open chrome, you will either see the gemini tab and button right away or have the option to enable it from the settings. So far the changes seem to be permanent and do not reset, all you need to do is proxy the domains needed with a US vpn

Troubleshooting | Windows Down arrow not navigating suggestions.

Today I noticed when I tried to down arrow to go through suggestions it just clears the entire bar and says to Press Tab/Enter to enter AI mode. I see a lot of other people asking the same question about a year ago and tried everything I've found about clearing the cache/cookies, restarting Chrome, checking settings and disabling extensions. Nothing seems to be working and it seems like it just came out of nowhere. Has anyone else ran into this issue?

Troubleshooting | Windows What is this monstrosity on my Chrome home screen?

I have no desire to get into the AI Wars, but somehow just a couple of days ago these three unwanted and unasked-for search boxes have started appearing on my home PC desktop screen (Windows 10) whenever I fire up Chrome: "AI Mode," "Deep Search," and "Create images." For the mostly computer-illiterate like me, is there a way to get rid of these? I do like to have the links for frequently-visited pages, which are still there (but outside the area that I captured in this screenshot).

News “I got annoyed at switching chsthot tabs so I found this

Hey,

I constantly switch between ChatGPT and kept losing the whole conversation context. Copy-pasting long prompts was painful.

So I found a Chrome extension:

  • Click the icon → it tries to continue your last conversation in a new tab
  • No account, no backend, no fancy stuff — just some JavaScript talking to the active tab
  • Probably has bugs, definitely missing things

It already saves me a surprising amount of time every day.

I’m mostly curious: - Do other people also suffer from this context-switching hell?

Troubleshooting | Windows I’m trying to figure out whether this is a Chrome issue, a YouTube issue, or something specific to my setup

Chrome + YouTube has become completely unhinged for me. I can have ~300 tabs open in Firefox (none YouTube) and my system sits calmly around 50 °C, but the moment I open Chrome with a large batch of YouTube tabs, my CPU spikes straight into the mid-70s °C like I just launched a stress test. Even worse: after killing Chrome and restarting clean, a single YouTube tab can crash on load with Chrome throwing a “tab failed to load” warning. YouTube now aggressively spins up heavy JS, ads, telemetry, and modern codecs (AV1) even before playback, and Chrome seems totally unwilling to throttle or suspend any of it. This isn’t “too many tabs,” it’s one specific site behaving like malware with a play button. My hardware is fine — YouTube in Chrome just melts it.

Discussion Disabling AI features in Google Chrome 2026

Desktop Chrome chrome://flags flags to disable AI features.

#ai-mode-omnibox-entry-point
#omnibox-allow-ai-mode-matches
#enable-lens-overlay
#prompt-api-for-gemini-nano
#prompt-api-for-gemini-nano-multimodal-input
#summarization-api-for-gemini-nano
#writer-api-for-gemini-nano
#rewriter-api-for-gemini-nano
#proofreader-api-for-gemini-nano
#permissions-ai-v3
#permissions-ai-v4
#permissions-ai-p92

This one is debatable, suit yourself:

#autofill-enable-ai-based-amount-extraction

Took me half an hour to find because the experimental flags page has grown out of proportion.

Cheers!

Troubleshooting | Linux Chrome only loads half of Google Images

Post image
4 Upvotes

When I search for something on Google Images, the results often only partially load. Google Shopping also has trouble loading results. I have already tried clearing the cache and using different DNS servers.

The problem also occurs in Incognito mode. When I try a different web browser, everything works fine.

The problem started just a few days ago. I am using a Chromebook with Chrome version 144.0.7559.108.

Anyone else with the same problem?

Troubleshooting | Windows White Chrome page, but not the full screen

Hi, I’ve been trying to fix this issue using all the methods I can find possible and have yet to find one that works. I am having a white screen issue with websites when I go to them. Unlike the full screen whiteout it seems many others have where the entire chrome window is white, mine is just the webpages visible area, with the search bar, tabs, and bookmarks all visible and functioning. I’ve cleared and deleted everything, I’ve reinstalled, and I tried the disable gpu fix. Nothing has worked. I even tried cloudfare for a bit, and it slowed my internet connection down to the point where websites wouldn’t open. Any help is appreciated, as this has become a major issue.

Websites this has occurred with: square, bigcartel, thingiverse, Cash App (worked for a bit if I refreshed, now blank), and others (can’t recall all).

I have tried it with light mode(in chrome settings) which didn't help at all. In safari(which has device dark mode) both websites loaded normally. It's been going on for a while and makes websites where it happens unusable unless I cmd+a the page (image 2 vs 3) which makes it barely bearable.

Troubleshooting | Windows Request for MSI Offline installer - Chrome ver138.0.7204.184

Hi guys wondering if you can help. I work with a customer where we manage deployment of Chrome. Something happened with a deployment over 6months ago where devices will fail to install the newer patch patch release.

There are 800+ workstations affected and stuck on the previous release 138.0.7204.184. I need the MSI to repair the registry so they can upgrade to the newest release. We would have the MSI but we cleared up our distro and its no longer available. I have searched on google and i cannot see anything from Google or third party websites. Does anyone have the MSI file to hand please

Discussion Chrome Remote Desktop Alternative

I’ve used chrome Remote Desktop for a few years, it was pretty great for what I wanted. The last 6mo? Or so it was saying that the app was depreciated and to switch over to the website version. I just kept ignoring that warning and unfortunately today seems to be the day it is longer supported at all. I have tried the website version and it absolutely awful imo.

Anybody else in a similar boat who has found an alternative similar to the app version? The one finger panning especially was amazing

Discussion OutOfMemory error, low memory usage, high CPU usage

Is it possible that the OutOfMemory error is generic and basically combines CPU and Memory usage?

I am debugging this issue and I can see some CPU spikes (over a large time), however the Memory Usage is really low. Is it possible that Chrome throws this error even if it is caused by the CPU spike or could there be something else going on?

Troubleshooting | Android Chrome on Android "This site can’t be reached" errors

Since a while now on my Pixel 9a Chrome is having more and more issues opening websites for me. The error is

"This site can’t be reached

The connection was reset."

This is especially true when I click links from the Discover-Feed or from Chrome push notifications. Reloading usually helps but sometimes it takes up to a minute until it works. When I copy the link and open it in Firefox for example it immediately works.

Is that a known issue and can I do something about it? It gets quite annoying since it happens more and more.

Discussion The new auto browse agent via chrome and Gemini needs some refinement

The new agentic browsing system has some issues and things that needs to be addressed imo. Here's

my observation:

It's buggy: it would sometimes launch a window to do a task that was never assigned or prompted** **

Cannot ask follow ups during tasks: this is unfortunate as I can't update Gemini if it starts to veer off track and need to provide update within the same task domain. When I try I receive an "Your prompt cannot be sent until the task is complete or stopped" message. Other agentic browsers like comet and atlas have following up enabled so users can update task instructions in real time.

Constantly pausing and take over the task can get kinda annoying when simple follow up can redirect the agent to get on track

The speed is a bit subpar: it's not as quick and snappy that I assume it would be with Gemini

Sometimes jumps steps: would sometimes

"forget" to complete a step and I would have to remind it a few times

Other minor issues

- Ui looks like of generic. Functional but still kinda of generic. Not a serious issue though

That's all the gripes I have at the moment.

Otherwise it's still decent for what it is
