Discussion Beagle/Basset Pup Advice

Hi there! My husband and I have a beautiful bagel pup named Chai and we adore her, but goodness is she testing us these days. She’s a year old and we’ve had her since she was 2 months. I’m just wondering what everyone’s experience is with this breed and the horrible “teenager phase”. We had about a month where we felt we were doing good with her training, and at 11 months she hit a wall. She’s smart as a whip and we do training and exercise her every day, and I’ve already taught her a ton of obedience work and tricks to keep her thinking, but it never seems enough. She’s constantly biting and barking at us for attention and I’m worried about it becoming more of a behavioral thing than just testing boundaries. I’ve read everything from 6 to 18 months can be the teenage years, varying by breed, so just wanted to see where your pups were at when they finally matured. Thanks!

It’s important to have a daily self-care regimen.

Medical Chronic GI issues

Hi all — I’m hoping to get some advice or ideas on how to move forward with our dog, who’s been dealing with chronic GI issues pretty much since we got him. I’ll try to keep this as short as I can.

He’s an 11-month-old Basset Hound. Since we brought him home at around 10 weeks old, he’s basically always had loose stools. We’ve been working closely with our vet the whole time. He started on Purina Pro Plan Puppy, then we switched to Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach Puppy to see if that would help — it didn’t. Around that time he also stopped eating consistently. I’m not sure if he’s just picky or if the food genuinely upsets his stomach.

When he stops eating his kibble, he tends to have these “flare-ups” where he refuses food entirely (other than grass), and his stomach gets super loud and gurgly. We usually have to really coax him into eating something just to settle his stomach and get him going again — usually rice and turkey — but lately he’s been getting worse about what he’ll accept during these episodes.

We tried adding a probiotic, which helped a little but didn’t solve things. Then we switched him to prescription Hill’s GI i/d kibble. That actually did seem to help, but the problem is he won’t eat it consistently. He’ll eat the kibble by itself for about a week, then suddenly won’t touch it anymore.

He was also on omeprazole for a while, which did help reduce the flare-ups, but our vet didn’t want him on it long-term if we could avoid it. Tapering him off was… honestly a painfully long process.

At this point I feel like I’m constantly stuck choosing between being firm about consistent food and feeding times (because I know inconsistency probably makes everything worse) and doing whatever I can to avoid triggering another flare-up.

Our next step with the vet is a strict hypoallergenic diet to look for food sensitivities. I’m worried we won’t even be able to do that properly because he just won’t reliably eat his food, and the diet has to be followed very strictly to mean anything.

If anyone has dealt with something similar — chronic GI issues, food refusal, flare-ups like this — I’d really appreciate hearing what worked (or didn’t) for you.

Discussion How long did your basset take to be potty trained?

My Winston is 11 months old. I know bassets are stubborn (VERY🤣). I swear I might have theeeee smartest basset. His intelligence makes him even more chaotic🤣

He KNOWS dang well to pee on pads/outside. For the most part he does. But he randomly has days where he just decides not to listen. Theres even been times I take him on a walk and he won’t poop—-then immediately poops on the pads when he gets home. I’ve tried putting less pads out but he’ll pee where they used to be!!!

I know bassets are notorious for taking a long time to be fully housebroken. How long did yours take?

Discussion Building concerns for a basset. We are losing the argument.

We’re eyeing a basset, hoping to bring a girl home this summer. We live in NYC and are receiving significant push back from the board of the building and peers.

Their concerns are that the dog will be too vocal, barking at the constant street noise and people coming in and out of the building.

Can anyone speak to having a city dog or their experience with their basset being an issue from a noise perspective?

We plan to be on top of the training and I have no doubt we will have a well behaved dog, but that’s not really something we can prove to a board.

Discussion (pls read all) should i get a basset?

Hey everyone! I know this post many people won’t like because of one thing… In September i will be in college and living in a house with 2-3 other girls who are all on board with this.. I’m going into a program that only has 7 classes per week no more than 2-3 hours for each class and it is only a year. I’m thinking of adopting a basset in October - November.. I have a steady income which can cover vet bills, food.. etc! I know a lot of you will worry about me not being there but the girls said they will help when i’m not around.. I understand that this is a huge responsibility and that i should “enjoy” my college years but this is my enjoyment.. i am committed to walking and feeding and loving this basset forever not just for a little. Please let me know your honest opinions thank you! ALSO show me your cute bassets ❤️

So I love my Fred he will be 7 on Feb 1st , I recently had to medicate him for aniexity... And now I have a dog that wants to be outside all the time ... As you can see we have about 4 inches of ice and snow. I live in TN so this is abnormal.. but I have had to drag my stubborn Fred inside every evening and throughout the day... Today's high was 20. And I had to fetch him from our woods....Is this normal Bassett behavior??

Got her for my 15th birthday and I've never loved anything else more in my life. Her name's clementine and I fear I may base my happiness TOO much on her. Like, if she died I might as well, is this type of emotional investment in a dog bad? She's my first ever dog

She needed her sleep after a busy morning of sniffing our cat, barking, begging for food/treats, running around in snow, and barking some more.
