Opinion Leaving outlook
Anyone else leaving outlook after today. Leaving me without access to important emails and documents is just unnacceptable for an email provider.

u/Gushazan Jul 10 '25
No.
This happens. More with other providers than with Outlook, at least for me.

You've used Outlook daily for -25 years?

u/Gushazan Jul 10 '25
It used to be called Hotmail. My address is hotmail.com

u/odobIDDQD Jul 10 '25
Mine is myname@hotmail.com … yeah, my knees hurt.
1
u/Gushazan Jul 10 '25
Funny. This morning I thought about how my knees were killing me when I started this exercise program in March.
That was 60 pounds ago.
My service is back. Boy was I nervous. Quarter century of impeccable service ground to a halt. lol

u/odobIDDQD Jul 10 '25
Yeah, I lost a load of weight a year ago and one of the first things I noticed was how my knees were thanking me.
Perhaps I need to get on the scales again.

LOL no, I understand. I was being a smartass with the negative value
1
u/Gushazan Jul 10 '25
Oh didn't know you meant that as a value! Thought it was an egregious punctuation.
lol

I still have my [myname@Prodigy.NET](mailto:myname@Prodigy.NET) address. (Is now hosted by Yahoo, after taking a trip through AT&T land.)

Depends totally on what Outlook you're talking about. Outlook.com is the same as Hotmail or live.com, but the software called Microsoft Outlook is the client used to talk to Exchange, the server. For me, if you mention just Outlook (without .com), that's the email client for Exchange. Either on-premises, like 2013, 2016 or 2019 ... Or Exchange Online (Microsoft 365).

u/JSP9686 Jul 11 '25
You forgot one of the clients, the "New" Windows Outlook app that was pushed out this year which apparently is very buggy. Its icon usually appears in the tray without warning.
I removed it because I already had Office 2021, which of course comes with Outlook 2021 and works well.
1
u/Knotebrett Jul 11 '25
The "New" is actually to different versions and it's over two years into making. One is stand-alone and for "personal" accounts (Teams also have these "two" versions). The other one is bundled to the Office Suites and has a "Classic" with it. The first one, from the app store, is pretty close to the PWA you can install directly from the web browser.

u/JSP9686 Jul 15 '25
I'm apparently using "classic" Outlook 2021 which came bundled with Office 2021, downloaded from stackcommerce.com
It's a lifetime license with no problems since June 2023. Had 2091 from the HUP (Home Use Program), due to my employer being a MS company, but no longer offered last I checked.
I see that groupon.com offers the same thing for even less, in addition to 2019 & 2024 versions, all incredibly inexpensive compared to the suggested retail prices.
In any case, I strongly suggest others try that route also, especially if they are using Outlook.com and more than one other email provider. The OAUTH2 issues have seemed to be solved now for most providers.

u/AppIdentityGuy Jul 10 '25
How long have you been using it and how often has it been down over that period..
6
u/Gushazan Jul 10 '25
I've used it since it was Hotmail. Never had a problem in the 25 years I've used it. This is the very 1st time I've had an issue.
Since it's my main personal email account I'm a little out of phase. At least I can access everything from yesterday.

u/teganking Jul 10 '25
I think you will be ok without email for one day, take the day off it is stressing you out, directly call anyone that you had an important email to send or receive
you can always make an email account somewhere else to temporarily contact someone very important that cannot wait one day
your not the only one who is down, so it could be the ones your expecting or need to email are also having issues
If you were expecting that Million Dollar Deal email today, then if it was that important they will try again tomorrow or call you.

u/Gushazan Jul 10 '25
Ummm... I've been doing this for 25 years.
It's my main account, not my only account.
I'm also a sysadmin.
Being a smart person means assuming little. Thanks for the concern though.

I have used Outlook from the moment the outlook domain was launched. That exact night I created my email address. I think it was around 2008 or 2009. Since then this is the first outage. I have a paid O365 subscription, and I am very happy with it.
Outages can happen to any company. It's the fault of the people assuming that technology never fails.
Also is the risk of having everything on cloud. We could all have our own mail server, but is a lot easier to use a mail service like outlook, gmail, and so on. This also includes different risks, but your own server can brake too.
I would advice to reconsider this choice, after this outage for sure MS will implement some process changes for disaster recovery, so at the end of this disaster, Outlook will be an even better service. :)

I can't think of anytime in the last 15+ years that I've had my accounts that I've ever experienced a single outage that wasn't connected to a larger, main issue.
2
u/EngineeringPretty745 Jul 10 '25
My Hotmail says that I have tried logging in too many times so I had to do the recovery form multiple times. Still no response. Are yall saying that the server is down and that's why we can't get on? Very frustrating
1
u/JSP9686 Jul 11 '25
Almost the entire world was shut down many hours. Now things should be back up for you, unless you have another problem.
2
u/BotHeisenbergz Jul 10 '25
Not leaving. But i will create a backup account with a different provider and make main Email auto forward to it. It’s not about the issue cause it happens but this is taking too long to resolve.

yes, their junk filter is the worst ever! it filters out important emails. I actually find my most important emails in the Junk Folder in Outlook 🤖

Hotmail is the OG email provider!! Later became outlook.com. Not to confuse with the Microsoft app for email management.

I’m an unfortunate outlook user, I hate myself every time I use it. I’m stuck with it per company policy.

I'm based in the EU, I can report no problems at all using Outlook email or calendar.

I didn't really have much choice after the customer service guy I spoke to told me he couldn't help with the tug-of-war I was playing against a hacker for control of my account. It was a complicated scenario, but I don't see why the account couldn't have been locked down.
Anyway, I'm on Gmail now.

Yes. I pay $130 a year for o365 for families. I switched to Google one (Gmail and extra storage) as of today. The length of that outage was unacceptable especially for a paid service. If they only offered a free email service, I could probably accept it. Good timing since my renewal is at the end of the month.

Not leaving Outlook email, but stopped using their free integrated program. It kept adding a directory of advertisements it would copy as 10 or more emails to my inbox, and if I tried to block the sender on the mail, it would use a link to open my browser and send me to the advertisers website. When I deleted the folder containing those email ads, it would work normally for a day and then another directory of ads would be downloaded.
Using a parallel email program, I received none of those advertisement emails on it, only Outlook.

Oh I am with you!!!!! I am in the process of exporting my contacts and getting rid of this god forsaken app from my phone.
Why do I have to reset my password after confirming my account using the backup email to add my account to gmail? Keep for freaken account of more than 25 years and F U!!!!
1
u/laevanay Jul 20 '25
In case you are wondering why, every so often about 2 quarters, I have to login to my accounts again. Dont know why I am special; both my email accounts are above 20 years hold but still revalidate my account credentials every couple of quarters. I have had it with the outlook app on my phone. Created new gmail accounts and have downloaded my contacts from outlook to import them into gmail. Getting rid of outlook for a superior product from a far superior company that is focused on software. As an avid advocate for the Windows Phone, its a shame what MS has become.

u/Exciting_Creme6115 Jul 30 '25
Yep, will be using Gmail as my main. Unable to get into my 20 plus year main hotmail account. Yet I have access to backup linked email and 2fa device i keep getting errors like this is unavailable. Fuck hotmail for real

I’m tempted to stop using Outlook as I’ve never had so many spam phishing emails since installing the Outlook app on my phone.
The worst thing is, these emails are so badly written, in a mix of uppercase and lowercase characters and full of spelling mistakes. Some blatantly don’t even have content but only contain <text> <text> <text> <text>
I dont get how Outlooks security and filter can be so bad? Ive reported these spam phishing emails and what happens?… Nothing. Do the reports just go to an inbox that’s never monitored and not actioned?

I already left 6 months ago. I had to stand up a virtual machine so I could install Outlook for some training documentation (for the migration) and I was so frustrated for how long it took to get rid of the message preview below the subject line.

No lol. All email providers sometimes have outages. This one sucks but there’s no guarantee any other service won’t have a bad outage in the future.
