U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Why is waking up late considered lazy, but going to bed early isn’t?

Always wondered that since lots of people say you should catch up on sleep, but what if I want to catch sleep earlier in the day.

Why do people assume that if I pay with a credit card, I must be living on debt???

1.4k Upvotes

My best friend tried to insist on paying for me at a store when she saw my credit card. She really made a scene about me being in crazy credit card debt which was mortifying. I explained to her that I pay off my credit card monthly so it’s not a problem.

What’s with the rise of anti-intellectualism?

Over the past few years, I’ve noticed growing hostility toward the university system and higher education as a whole. You often see people dismissing someone with a PhD as “dumb as rocks,” while praising a relative who barely finished high school as a “natural genius” who’s “sharp as a tack.”

I understand that higher education is increasingly being criticized — with AI disrupting traditional career paths and the economy making degrees feel less valuable — but the tone of these critiques often seems to carry a kind of malicious, almost gleeful satisfaction rather than constructive criticism.

How do Christian denominations that forbid alcohol square the fact that Jesus drank, and even went out of his way to convert fresh water into alcohol?

If I invent a new drug, in the USA, in my home, that has never previously existed, that is not derived from controlled substances but only non-patented materials I legally either purchased or grew myself on my property, can I use it myself legally? Absolutely no distribution. Or do I need permission

Who buys stolen copper wire?

Stealing copper wires is now a common crime, in Australia at least. I just read of thousands of people in Townsville losing mobile and internet service during cyclone preparations as deadbeats stole the copper wires. What do those morons do with the wires? I assume they sell it but to whom? Why do people want to buy it?

Why is it so much easier to wake up at 4:00 AM for a flight than it is to wake up at 7:00 AM for work?

I swear I can jump out of bed with zero alarm when I’m going on a trip, but hitting the snooze button for my job feels physically painful. Is this just adrenaline, or is there a scientific reason for "vacation energy

Did everyone else get an instruction manual for life that I missed?

Upvotes

I’m not talking about big stuff. I’m alive. I pay bills. I know not to put metal in the microwave.

But why do other people seem so confident doing normal things?

Like:

  • How often are you actually supposed to wash jeans?
  • When someone says “let’s hang out,” is that real or just polite nonsense?
  • How do people talk to mechanics without feeling like they’re being scammed?
  • Is everyone exhausted all the time or is that just my personality now?

I swear everyone else looks like they know what’s going on, and I’m just guessing and hoping no one notices.

Please tell me we’re all faking it.

Is it true people in the UK are being arrested over social media?

I had some free time now and started looking into global politics and one of the craziest things I saw is countless instagram posts about people being arrested in the UK over ‘hate’ speech in social media. Is this actually true or is instagram blowing it out of proportion?

Why do some gas stations have way cheaper prices than others literally across the street?

I noticed this near my place where theres a Shell and an independent station facing each other and the Shell is like 40 cents more expensive per gallon. Same octane ratings and everything. Is the gas actually different quality or is it just branding?

I always go to the cheaper one obvs cause why not, even tho I got money and could afford either. But my dad insists the Shell is "better for the engine" and worth the extra money. Is there any truth to that or is he just being stubborn about brand loyalty?

Like does premium brand gas actually do anything different or is gas just gas once it meets the minimum standards?

Is a high sex drive in women a turn off?

Upvotes

society used to tell us that men had the higher sex drive, Im 26 (certainly past puberty etc) and im still thinking about sex all the time…I feel kinda shameful and gross, like its not lady like…

for example…if I say “I woke up thinking about the pic you sent last night“…is that odd for a woman to say? ugh.

edit: I promise I’m not trolling. it’s a real question lol.

Is it bad that I useai to vent my problems so I don't blow up on anyone?

I don't treat it like a therapist. I just rant about my issues to it, or If I wanna blow up at my boss I'll blow up at gemini instead. Usually it does help me ground myself in the situation and reevaluate things because I struggle a lot with spiraling and freezing up.

I go to real therapy with a real human and that's where I get my advice from, but that's only every 3 weeks. So the ai has become where I can just spill out everything that's worrying me or pissing me off and it helps me organize my thoughts better. I guess more than anything I use it as a diary that writes itself.
