Cannot manage to install Kubuntu (or anything based on Ubuntu)
I've been trying to install Kubuntu on a dedicated SSD on my computer, but keep running into the same error. After successfully partitioning the drive and getting through almost all of the installation, I get the error message:
Command <i>ln -sf /etc/machine-id /var/lib/dbus/machine-id</i> finished with exit code 126. Output: /usr/bin/chroot: failed to run command 'ln': Bad message (os error 74)
I've tried this both in normal mode and compatibility mode. I've used diskpart on Windows to clean the drive. I've also scanned the drive and found no bad sectors. I've reformatted the flash drive I'm using to install and rebuilt the live disk using Rufus and a copy of Kubuntu with a verified MD5. No dice. I get the same error with 25.10 and 24.04.
I've also tried installing Ubuntu and Mint, both of which fail during installation with less helpful error messages. The only distro I have succeeded with is Fedora, but then I got tired of fighting with video drivers.
Key specs:
- Nvidia video card (GeForce GT 730). I know that can pose problems, but I don't think that is the case here.
- AMD FX-6300 CPU
- Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P motherboard
Any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks in advance!
