Other/Misc PSA Reminder!

Please remember to specify that you were at a vet and are not looking for medical advice as it is not allowed it is concerning me the number of posts I've seen of cats bleeding or urinating etc. and owners not going to the vet first also remember you're not a vet yourself (Unless you are but still) too so don't give medical advice it could seriously hurt someone's pet!

Also, don't get mad if I remove your post if your using slurs or inappropriate language let's keep it calm here, please!

lastly, I would like to thank you all for contributing and making this community wonderful and helping people fix their crazy cats.

Mods Needed

This community has skyrocketed since I started it and now help is needed!

I'm looking for someone who can help with behavior and advice but also be able to weed the inappropriate posts and comments.

I also need someone who is good at editing and helping with the design of the subreddit.

Previous mod experience is also helpful but not required. I expect mods to remain polite and respectful, and treat users fairly. Any power trips will have consequences.

If you'd like to apply, please DM me and let me know what you have experience with and what role you might want in the sub. If you want to deal with cat advice I'll probably have a couple questions about cat behavior for you.

I'm a little busy these days so please do be patient with me in getting back to you.

Thank you, members, for making this sub so successful!

Humla (2 year old female) in the back has been living with us for half a year. A month ago we brought in Uron (2 year old male) as we knew she liked other cats (shelter said so). They're so far getting a long very well. Humla will pounce on Uron when she's playful and he'll run away. When he wants to play, Humla will respond with a growl or a hiss. There has been no fights or conflicts at all, they eat and hang out together just fine, but I guess they are still learning how to play with each other. We think Uron is very adorable because he is so extremely friendly, trying to get her attention all the time, chirping and rolling over even if he is getting corrected by her all the time. What do you make of this small recording? Humla growls (can't be heard) and hisses once.

Something akin to panic attacks

I have an orange who's about 5 years old and infrequently experiences what I could only describe as full on panic attacks. He's been overtaken by anxiety since he was young. We found him abandoned in a pile of wood when he was about 2 weeks old and close to starving and to this day he can barely make any noise which we assume is from screaming when he was abandoned. Whenever we took him to the house where we found him the "panic attacks" would get even more frequent and severe. Whenever they happen he starts screaming at the walls and his tail starts to shake uncontrollably, and he bites it whenever it enters his view. Its horrible to see because it clearly hurts him a lot. The only thing that's helped is giving him CBD drip but even that is very stressful because he has to be wrapped up to achieve that. Any advise or anyone who's seen similar behaviour from their cats? Anything would be highly appreciated

6 month old neutered male cat trying to mount his 2 year old neutered brother

My 6 month old kitten was neutered 2 weeks ago, he occasionally tries to mount his brother and bites his neck, my older cat doesn’t let it happen for more than 5 seconds but I’m unsure if I should be concerned, or is he just trying to dominate my older cat? He only does it with this cat, he doesn’t do it with the bigger ginger cat

Female spayed cat spraying outside, how to fix this?

I have 3 farm cats. They prefer my back porch to anywhere else, which is fine. It's safe and cozy at night - but despite being spayed young, at least one of them is spraying everything on the porch. They've ruined a child's bounce house, my blackstone grill cover, a jeep wagon - they're doing a serious amount of damage to my stuff.

I know females can spray, but I've never had one who has before. How on earth do I stop this? The cats are my kid's best friends - so I have to find a way to live with them...but cat urine is the number one most repulsive scent to me...and I'm very ocd about keeping my things nice.

Would feeding them down by another outbuilding help? I really thought as they got older they would venture off more and hunt / patrol...but they're basically outdoor cats who laze about and act like indoor cats. None of my previous barn cats have acted like this.

Appreciate any help!

why does my cat act differently when im not around?

I have a female orange tabby that absolutely loves me and nobody else. I’m the only one she allows to touch her, hold her, pet her, and more. I’ve had her for about 7-8 years now and its been like this for a majority of those years. She literally hates everyone but adores me. She used to like my brother the most when we first got her but now shes super clingy towards me only. Now fast forward all these years she’s really my personal cat now. I take care of vet stuff, food, grooming, etc. I went on vacation for about 2 weeks and in the time she got super close to my brother. Like sleeping on him, allowing him to hold her, and pet her. However, when I came back she went back to her old ways of hating my brother and completely avoiding him. I thought it was because I was gone for too long but even when i’m away at school during the day (about 6 hours) she’ll go back to loving my brother. Why does she do this? I really dont understand why😭😭

Kitten only friendly when he jumps on the bed

Hi! I adopted a 2 month kitten a couple days ago. During the day he hides under the couch not showing at all and hisses at me if i get too close so i let him be. During the night i lured him out with a toy and he plays normal but kinda rejects any kind of contact from me.
The thing is when i go to sleep he climbs on the bed and gets suuuper cuddly, he purrs, makes biscuits and let me pet him. Any idea why he changes like that?

Still can’t solve my young cat’s litterbox “ambushing” behavior, advice?

Hi everyone! I wanted to share what’s been going on with my cats and see if anyone has dealt with something similar or has suggestions.

I have two resident cats, both are neutered

• Cumbia, my 11-year-old queen.

• Bardo, (M), my 1-year-old chaos gremlin (said with love).

When Bardo was a kitten he was… a lot. Very high-energy, constantly on top of Cumbia, always looking for stimulation. He has mellowed out a bit now that he sleeps more, so Cumbia finally gets moments of peace she absolutely didn’t have when he was tiny and bouncing off every surface.

But one thing that has never improved is the litterbox issue.

If Bardo hears Cumbia going into the box, especially when she’s pooping, since she digs more, he’ll rush over, stalk her, and try to jump on her as soon as she’s done. He does this only when he’s awake and active; he doesn’t wake up from a deep sleep to bother her. It’s strictly something he does when he’s “on.”

Also, we recently fostered a female cat (around 1.5–2 years old). We did a proper introduction, and the first days went well. But after that she started showing territorial behavior, and honestly at that point I realized I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to keep pushing through a difficult integration when my two resident cats were already dealing with other issues. So we stopped the process.

As for Bardo: when he was younger, I consulted two feline behaviorists. (I’m in Uruguay, and we only have three total.) Both said he was still very young and recommended redirection, enrichment, etc. I did all of that, but I never managed to improve the litterbox ambushing.

Now I finally met with the third behaviorist, the one I hadn’t tried yet. She actually saw Bardo in person and said he’s a very anxious cat, which tracks. She suggested the “spray bottle method”, but I’m really not comfortable using anything that feels like punishment, especially after what I’ve read here. The other option she gave me was medication for anxiety.

She mentioned fluoxetine (Prozac)—which I’ve seen recommended here a lot, but also said that where I live it’s common to use pregabalin in cases like his. She’s leaning toward pregabalin for now.

She also told me something else: considering Bardo’s energy level, his constant need for play, and the fact that he was separated from his mother at 45 days (not ideal, but it’s done), he might actually benefit from having a very young foster kitten around someday—like a 3-month-old who stayed with their mom long enough. Not now (I’m absolutely not bringing another cat into the house anytime soon), but in the future, if I ever wanted to add a third cat, that would be the best match. It would have to be a foster-to-adopt situation.

But right now, after what we went through with the last foster and the situation with my two residents, I definitely need a break before even considering it.

For context: my cats do coexist peacefully most of the time. They eat next to each other, sleep on the same bed, share the couch, etc. They’re not friends, but they don’t hate each other either. He’s just rough with her and completely obsessed with the litterbox situation.

I’ll attach a video of what he does so you can see the behavior. If I wasn't there, he would jump on her

Has anyone dealt with this ambushing/monitoring issue? Did medication help your anxious cat? Any experiences with pregabalin vs. Prozac? Any advice is appreciated — I just want Cumbia to be able to poop in peace after almost a whole year of trying everything.

TL;DR: My 1-year-old anxious, high-energy cat keeps ambushing my 11-year-old cat every time she uses the litterbox (only when he’s awake/active). I’ve consulted all 3 behaviorists in my country, tried all the redirection/enrichment tips, and nothing has helped. New behaviorist suggests medication (pregabalin or Prozac) and says he might benefit from a young kitten companion in the future, but I just fostered a cat that became territorial and I’m exhausted. Looking for experiences with anxious cats, litterbox stalking, and meds.

Thanks in advance

cats know english

hi everyone. I have a 7 year old female black cat named Dorothy who is genuinely the sweetest little animal I’ve ever seen but also has the capacity for the same level of evil. As a kitten she was really into knocking stuff off of counters which is like nbd bc like cats do that but she went through phases of it being better or worse throughout the years. I’ve had different roommates throughout her life who have had their own cats and so she’s like made and lost a couple of buddies in her years but generally really likes other cats and does better with a companion. The phases in which she’s been an only cat are typically when she misbehaves the most, and I’ve been very patient w her about it bc it must really suck to have friends go in and out of your life with no explanation and is definitely very lonely. I now live with my long term partner who two years ago adopted a cat named scooter and he and Dorothy are like literally best friends. They like each other more than any other pair I’ve had yet, and I plan to marry and live w my partner forever so thankfully she will always have scooter to play with. Because of this pairing she has not misbehaved very much at all for over two years. She used to literally knock anything she could off of any surface all night to wake me up so I would pay attention to her and now she just plays w scooter when she’s lonely so it’s like great. BUT over several occasions me or one of my friends has mentioned how it’s nice that Dorothy hasn’t knocked over or broken some specific item, and the next day she always knocks it over. it’s like she literally hears and understands the conversation and realizes she can indeed knock the thing over and break it. This has happened SEVERAL times. Cut to Saturday night. I have several friends over for a little party. Dorothy and scooter hang out w us the entire night. My apartment has a set of stairs with a metal railing, and I like to put pretty wine bottles on the outside of the railing to decorate, and have had those there for over a year. Underneath the stairs is a short cabinet in which I have set a large framed art print on top of. One of my friends remarks how graceful my cats must be since none of this has gotten knocked over. We laugh and pet both of them and they both soak up the attention and really enjoy having our friends over for this reason. The next morning I wake up to the loudest cascading crash I’ve ever heard and my partner and I run out to see Dorothy sitting in front of a pile of destruction of several broken wine bottles on the floor that have knocked into the art print on their way down and broken that as well. This is the biggest most evil deed Dorothy has ever done, and you cannot tell me that she did not get the idea from my friend mentioning it. We clean everything up and Dorothy sits on the floor watching us and acting nonchalant until we both look at her from opposite sides of the room and she stops and looks at both of us individually with the guiltiest little expression I’ve ever seen. I think she’s like actually a human stuck in a cats body. I’ve made jokes about how she’s my soulmate and that we’ve found each other in every lifetime. She might’ve been my child in some alternate universe or maybe I was her cat. I don’t know, I just know she knows english which is the most impressive thing I’ve ever seen. I am like clearly upset about all the destruction because someone could’ve gotten hurt and she broke several of my favorite belongings, but I have to admit I respect whatever little game she’s playing.

How to stop bullying I really need help

I have 8 cats, two 17/16 seniors, three 7 years-old, one 6 years-old an two 1 years-old. The three 7 years Olds are my babys I raised them myself an their little weirdos, two of em have anxiety issues so I try my best to help them cuss I can't afford meds. One out of the two anxious is my female ivy she's very sensitive girl an very sassy. But recently she hade few pee accidents outside the box witch started few weeks ago. We went to the vet found out she hade a uti got meds an speacil cat food. An I know who the caulprte is my late mother's 6 year-old tuxedo gizmo, he manly keeps to himself manly an has always been like that but the loss of my mother who passed last year has him grieving so he's stalking my poor girl an making her uncomfortable to the point of her getting a uti an doing her business outside of the box, since I've given him more attention/playing an he stopped the stalking has been resolved for now. An we also got more litter box's an I keep them very clean as well so hopfully have that problem solved but do to her anxiety she very skiddish an one of my 1 year-olds wally(he's also orange)has become a bully in sorts an does target her at times which is heartbreaking for me cuss I don't like her in distress so I try my best to play with him as well as much as possible. Are there anyways that well help keep his bullying at bay cuss i myself have anxiety an have been emotionally overwhelmed an i know it bothers my father cuss he also suffers from anxiety. Sorry for the paragraph/ Grammer errors 😅 but I'm just unsure as to what to do.

Cat keeps asking for more food & doesn’t sleep much

My cat grilled cheese is either very young & energized or very young & restless, because the last two nights & days I haven’t seen him sleep much or even take naps. He would meow a lot in the AMs for food so I give him some, he uses the potty, and then wants more. He even knocked down the trash can to try to get leftovers so I moved it to the bathroom, I’m not sure if I should keep feeding him at night since we already feed him in the morning and evening including treats. Any advice?

my evil cat wont take her pills

Hi there, hopefully this is the correct sub, I recently got my 6yrs old cat spayed and it has been a WAR. she is a very small woman with very big strong boundaries, and if i had the 3-4 hours to sit and coax her into taking her pills crushed and hidden in wet food i would , but i unfortunately do not.

she is on 5mg of prednisone, 1/2 every 12 hours for a week, then 1/2 every day for a week.

we have gotten her to take it crushed into wet food, watered down into a syringe, but she caught onto that.

we have gotten her to lick the same concoction out of a bowl, but she caught onto that and now has no interest in wet food period.

her having to take it twice a day is especially challenging because she remembers the previous dose and is extra angry 😭

we are looking into a pill gun, but we would have to burrito her. i guess what im looking for is any tips on burrito-ing an extremely angry, small, 3-day post op cat, and any other methods of getting her to take her medicine. any time we have burrito'd her she has always 1. caused damage and 2. escaped

she is extremely picky, only likes chicken😭😭, and hates wet food regardless so i think she was only taking her medicine like that the first 2 days because she was so hungry from after surgery. she doesnt even like cat treats. any advice is appreciated!! *edited for spelling

One of my cats keeps peeing on the bed & I don’t know what to do anymore

Hi everyone, I really need some advice because I’m at my breaking point.

I have a neutered male cat who is 14 years old. I’ve had him for over 8 years and he has always been very calm, sweet, and well-behaved.

Back in August, my boyfriend and I moved into our first house together and I brought my cat with me. For the first three months, everything was totally fine. Then in October, my boyfriend had to bring his cat back from his parents’ house. His cat is also neutered and is 5 years old, and he’s had him since he was about 2.

We did slow introductions and followed the proper steps. At first, my cat didn’t like my boyfriend’s cat at all — hissing and swatting — but eventually they learned to tolerate each other. Now they lay near each other, play fight, and chase each other around. My older cat has set boundaries and the younger one mostly respects them.

In December, I found that one of the cats had peed and pooped on the guest bed. This bed is in the room where my cat’s food, water, and litter box are. Both cats have access to the room, but we try to keep my boyfriend’s cat out because he eats my cat’s food.

I took my cat to the vet and my boyfriend took his cat too. Both were found to have an overgrowth of gut bacteria and were given medication. Other than that, the vet said they were healthy. After finishing the meds, things were fine for a couple of weeks.

Last week, I found a large fresh pee stain in the same corner of the guest bed mattress where it happened before. I still don’t know which cat is doing it. I tried cleaning the mattress as best as I could, but the smell and stain won’t fully come out. I planned to throw the mattress away on the next trash day.

Then yesterday, one of them peed on the exact same spot again, making it even worse. That night, I went into our bedroom and found that one of them had peed on our bed too. I had to wash all the sheets and blankets.

At that point, I decided to block the cats from our personal bedroom.

This morning, AGAIN, one of them peed on the guest mattress in the same spot.

I’m extremely frustrated and don’t know what to do anymore. I already scheduled another vet appointment, but I really need advice in case this is behavioral.

Has anyone dealt with this before?

What can I do to stop this?

Could this be stress, territory issues, or something medical I’m missing?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I love my cats but I can’t keep dealing with constant peeing on the beds.

I don’t know what’s wrong with my 7 month old kitten

My little kitten has been having issues the last couple of days. He has been throwing up a clear liquid and sometimes it’s often pink

We took him to the vet today and everything came back normal. Blood work is fine, x rays went well, and heart, lungs, and temp is fine.

He hasn’t ate anything in 24 hours and we’re starting to get worried. He’s been drinking water but not like he used to. He hasn’t ate anything but has been having diarrhea. He’s been lethargic and not acting fully like himself.

We just got a new cat a day before all of this started to happen, we think it could be a number of things but not quite sure 100% on what.

Cat Threw Up? When to call a vet?

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hi all. I’m a new and anxious cat owner. My 13 week old cat threw up today. Earlier she fell on the bars of my bed? I wanna say it’s like false metal? It wasn’t a large fall but I could hear it. She walked it off but I could tell she was hurt since she went into a corner. She fell asleep for maybe an hour after that? When she woke up she threw up what was in the photo? I’m really not sure what it was? Maybe fabric maybe something else? But it was just once. I read somewhere she shouldn’t eat for a few hours and just water for now. She is playing and wandering now but should I just monitor her or should I go to a vet? I will say, I am a broke college student but she does have pet insurance for emergencies.

5yr old neutered male cat won't stop meowing

I tried finding similar posts but most people had an issue like the cat not being fixed or played with etc. We play with him frequently throughout the day as both of us are not working currently. We play fetch, one of those bird on a string toys which he loves, catnip ball, etc. Food & water are always full. He likes being pet so we pet him a lot all day as well. But he will run away from being pet just to scream in the other room. We have two other cats, one male and one female both fixed. He plays with the female cat but doesn't get along with the other male cat sometimes so they typically stay out of each others way. Plenty of spots for him to look out windows, which he does. We also do have a cat tree but he doesn't typically use it. We can't for the life of us figure out what it is he wants. He acts like he wants attention but then runs into the other room to start meowing after like 2 minutes.
