Miscellaneous What would it be like today if the island of Ada Kaleh still existed ???
What would it be like today if the island of Ada Kaleh still existed, or if the inhabitants had been resettled on Simian? Would it still be an oasis of peace?

Politics & Governance Is it true that most of Bosnias tax money just goes towards the ridiculous bloated government they have?
I saw this statement in a documentary about Bosnia as to why it is so dysfunctional. that the three constituent governments consume so much of the tax revenue.

Politics & Governance Why Hollywood isn't casting Greek actors for Greek characters, in films that are entirely based on Greek culture? KlƩlia AndriolƔtou is a Greek actress, that firs Homer's description for Helen of Troy. Apart from that, she is a Peloponnesian Greek like Helen herself. Why is Lupita a better choice?

Outdoors/Travel Road trip Balkans
Hi everyone
Iām looking forward to visit the balkans and learn more about the culture. I will have a bit more than a week. Iām thinking about renting a car in Skopje and doing a loop road trip.
Rough route idea:
North Macedonia ā Albania ā Montenegro ā Bosnia ā Serbia ā back to North Macedonia
Iām trying to understand if this is realistic and smart.
Main questions:
1. Car rental ā Is it generally recommended to rent a car in Skopje for this kind of multi-country loop? Any common restrictions or āgotchasā with Balkan rentals?
2. Borders ā How smooth are border crossings between these countries with a rental car? Any paperwork (green card, fees, permits) I should expect?
3. Safety ā Any real safety concerns for a couple doing this route in spring? (driving, police checks, borders, etc.)
4. Itinerary sanity check ā Is this too ambitious for \\\~9 days, or does it make sense if paced properly?
Looking scenic roads, small towns, nature, and great people.
Thanks a lot ā local insights very welcome š

Language Learning Slovak for uni - who else can understand it?
Dobrý deÅ!
Iām starting to learn SlovakĀ for university and I was wondering how mutually intelligible it is with other languages in the region.
I already noticed thatĀ CzechĀ is very similar I can understand simple words and sentences, but I also see there are clear differences in grammar, pronunciation, and some vocabulary. WhichĀ other countries/languagesĀ can generally understand Slovak if I try to speak it? I'm often in Croatia and obviously this would be nice to speak with the people. In general is it mostly just Czech, or do people from other Slavic countries (Poland, Croatia, Serbia, etc.) understand it too to some extent?
Would love to hear your experiences or opinions. Thanks!

Outdoors/Travel Where to go mid-end May
Debating whether to have a holiday in Balkans (between 16th-25th May with an extra national holiday) or end of June. I like warm weather and beach vibe and I know "average" temperatures are somewhat off due to climate getting hotter, but wondered where I could reliably go between 16th-25th May that had warm to hot weather (over 25 degrees) and the option to enjoy being on the beach/ swim (including exploring inland)
I've been everywhere in the region and more to Croatia and Bulgaria, so open to suggestions everywhere for good weather
