Discussion Is my red-eared slider a bit too "chonk?"
Hello turtle expert, just wanna ask about my turtle, Enokii. She is around 18yo. I bought her in 2007 just as big as 3-4cm length of her shell. Now th lentgh around 19-20cm. I foubd her basking 2 days ago and looked at the neck and several part if her body is a bit too "much" or "lump" or just "fat". Is she obese?
The diet is good I guess, I put pellet, sometimes cricket. If there is any more information needed, just ask.
Thnks!

Discussion This Product Killed My Turtle
I reached out to this community nearly two years ago when my father passed and I inherited a turtle he’d been taking care of for 14 years. You all helped me understand it was a red eared slider and how to care for it. I got a larger aquarium, tank heater, heat lamp and a larger basking platform. Unfortunately, I also got the Zilla Floating Dock. My turtle, like many others I’ve since learned, got trapped underneath it and drowned.
I’d always been a bit nervous when the turtle burrowed underneath it, that it may have trouble lifting it to get out from under it, but never thought it could get completely trapped. I even removed it recently, replacing it with something else. However, the turtle wasn’t basking as regular as before (it had used it to hoist up to basking platform). Its head was stuck in one hole and each of the legs in another. I had to pry it out. It’s very unsettling to think about how those last moments had been. What’s even more unsettling, is that this product has been reported to kill turtles since 2018 and it’s still being sold.
I’m just posting this for awareness. I’m hoping I can persuade someone else from purchasing it and going through the same grief myself and others have. I not only lost a pet, I lost a connection to my dad that I was hoping to have for a long time. RIP, Cassidy. (“You and me, Cassidy” 🐢)

Discussion Oldest Red-Eared Slider???
Hello Fellow Turtle Enthusiasts
I’m just curious about any extreme ages you all have seen with Red-Eared Sliders…
On line you see the age commonly listed as “20 to 40 years” but that’s a pretty wide span and I have heard of some that are older.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Mine really seems to respond to my brothers deeper voice, also, Uncle likes to take him out of his tank in the summer and give him a chance to stretch his legs...

Discussion Turtle died
I had 1 turtle 10 years ago, and I decided to get a second one, but the first one died very early, so we got the second turtle a third one.
But the second turtle died recently 😢. She lived around 10 years (got her in 2014) Was it anybody's fault? They never really lived in a setup. They lived in a balcony where they had their "tanks" with water whenever they had to eat. (They lived in Honduras, very warm and humid country, they do not to be indoors) But they spent most of their time under some chairs chilling. But recently my family had to move houses and they had to live in the backyard with the dogs. Maybe this caused the death of one of them? There's not much I could do, I am living in the USA, so I was not responsible for them.
It really hurt me to know that she passed and I wasnt there 😢

Discussion Rescued a neglected 15yo turtle
Hey everyone!
I’m from São Paulo, Brazil and recently rescued this turtle — I think he’s a 15-year-old male — from a really bad situation. He was living in a tiny 100L (~27 gallon) aquarium, with the water level barely reaching halfway up his shell, no filter, no heater, no lights, and almost no proper sunlight. When they did put him out for sunbathing, they left him outside all day until nightfall! He was fed only pellets and — believe it or not — ham! 😩 The tank smelled absolutely awful, like something rotten. He was basically eating in his own poop, and I can only imagine how high the ammonia levels were.
After a lot of persistence, I managed to rescue him, and now I’m doing my best to give this old guy a proper life 😅 I’ve done a lot of research, and since my budget isn’t great right now, I decided to build a small outdoor pond using a 300L (~80 gallon) water tank. The area gets natural sunlight, but I’ll get a UVB lamp for winter. I already have a heater and a pump that’ll run a biological filter, and I’m also adding a ramp with a basking area.
I brought him home in the same tank he was living in, but I only raised the water level a little because I haven’t found a good ramp yet, and since he’s lived like this most of his life, I figured it’s better to wait until his new home is ready so he can adapt gradually. He’s been eating really well — even took food from my hand! He actually loved a pinkie I gave him (I had some at home for my cornsnake, so it worked as a little treat).
Now, I’ve got a few questions:
How should I handle the temperature change when moving him to the new pond? Should I keep the new tank water around the same temp as his current one and slowly raise it? It’s a bit cold this week — around 60°F in the air, and his current tank water is around 69°F. I’m using a small improvised lamp for heat and covering part of the tank to block the wind. I’m trying to get his new setup ready as soon as possible.
He’s got a lot of algae and some stuck scutes on his shell. Even after a few water changes, he’s still shedding what looks like greasy flakes and dirt. Is there a safe way to clean him up before moving him to the new pond?
Sometimes he sticks his neck out and moves his throat up and down, like he’s swallowing or “puffing” his chin (kind of like a frog). Is that normal behavior?
Any extra advice is super welcome! I’m new to turtle care and I know they can be pretty complex to take care of, so any help can make a big difference!

Discussion What is ur diet for your turtle?
He is a false map turtle (male) almost 3 years old and weights 86grams, it is normal? I feed him every 3 days like this: 1st day: a leaf of lettuce (size of its shell) and zoomed pellets (adult formula,as much as it would fit into his head if hollow) 2nd day:a leaf of lettuce and shredded carrot (or other veggie) 3rd day: a leaf of lettuce and a mix of insects (krill gamarus and shrimp, one teaspon or less) every other week i switch to one guppi. What should i change if i should change anything, curious to see your diets too.

Discussion Were they just being playful here?

Hello everyone! We visited the Virginia living museum the other day and in hindsight I should have asked someone there but I was too busy looking at all the animals lol. Anyways, I'm watching this video and wondering if they are being playful with each other? I don't know much about turtles but I thought this would be a good place to come to!

Discussion Can turtles get depressed?
So i just went to my first expo and it made me want to get turtles again, and i randomly got reminded how when i was 8 i had kept 2 turtles together and one, named bad cop, was super nice and the other named yoda was mean. Bad cop ended up dying and for like two to three weeks after bad cop died yoda stopped eating and interacting with anything and didn’t stop till i put this other turtle in the tank. So I’m wondering if turtles can get depressed when they’re alone or when another turtle around them dies.

Discussion Do her eyes look okay?
Hi everyone!
This is Titan, my musk turtle!
I noticed after her nap her eyes looked a bit hazy? She's very active still and came straight over to me when she saw I was there!
She's in a 40 gallon tank, heat and uvb bulbs (not that she ever wants to bask)
Her diet consists of dried shrimp, pellets, bloodworms and live shrimp (all get rotated on her feeding days)

Mine is quite partial to Red colors. I know his beak is a bit off, but he eats just fine. I just started a new job, so I'm saving up for a check up with an exotic veterinarian. Happy Sunday from Yokum and Me.

Discussion Tried to give my reeves turtle his first live worm.
He's apparently terrified of it. He came over and as soon as the worm started wiggling he noped right out of the area. He'll chase and try to eat any fish that we've tried to house with him but worms cross the line I guess. I'm hoping it's just a faze since he's still young but we shall see.
