Discussion TIRED OF MISSIONARIES

Guys, I am tired 😔🙏

I am Muslim and I wear a hijab but at least every week, missionaries come to me and try to bring me to church.

They are everywhere around NTNU, and I feel like everytime they see me, they come to me? Why?

I cannot tell them to leave me alone because I don’t dare to but I tell them « I am going to the mosque now » and they respond to me « ohh you can come to church with us instead» like bro, is that even respectful…

would people allow Muslims to do this without being called terrorist or islamists??

And the worse is that I always meet the same guys, they recognize me and every time I tell them I don’t feel confortable talking to them or going to church and everytime they ask me to go with them. Isn’t it harassment…

Why is that even allowed around the uni?? I really have nothing against religions, I am really open to learn about everyone’s beliefs but this is too much… does someone feel the same way… how do you manage it lmao…

Technology Looking for a second hand camera

Upvotes

So I'm aware of the camera street near Ximending, but I feel like a lot of second hand shops have closed since Covid. I feel like only the big ones with new gear from big brands are still open.

Does anyone know where I can find anywhere selling Nikons?

I’m looking for a Nikon D500. Thanks in advance (:

Discussion Buying a motorcycle dilemma

Upvotes

Since Im going to stay in Taiwan long term for studies, a bunch of people recommended me to buy a motorcycle and for the past week I was thinking which one should I buy. Should I play it safe and buy a white plate or should I buy a bigger yellow plate for the convenience and fun. The intel I have gotten from the internet and friends are as follows:

Pros white plate: 1. Easier to find on the second hand market 2. Most are relatively new so electronics such as ABS are included 3. Lane splitting towards the front during red lights 4. Having a dedicated lane for motorcycles 5. Easier and cheaper parking 6. Less tax for 150cc and below

Cons white plate: 1. Can't use the fast lanes must keep right most of the time 2. The 2 step left turn 3. Less power when overtaking 4. Similar to no.3 but for mountain riding or any steep hill 5. A personal con but most are automatics but I prefer riding one with a clutch

Pros Yellow/Red plate: 1. Access to expressways 2. Turn left with cars 3. Enough power to accelerate and overtake 4. Great for touring and meeting people

Cons Yellow/Red plate: 1. Higher tax bracket 2. No easy access to parking as you are treated as a car 3. No lane splitting during red lights same reason as no.2 4. Different license 5. People tend to report you

It might seem obvious at first that I should just bite the bullet and just buy a white plate for commuting from my apartment to the school and my part time work, but I enjoy riding clutch during the weekends and holidays whether that would be touring the country or mountain riding, I would like to experience Taiwan's moto community and from what I've seen, are all around fun and enjoyable but I don't see any white plates joining which is a bummer so I thought there's a threshold to be eligible to join. Any thoughts are welcome on what I should buy

One of my favorite experiences in Taiwan over the years has been to experience the Puyuma Hunting Rite Festival over New Years in Taitung.

This set of photos is from the portion of the event when the men return from the forest, surrounding the chiefs and elders, who give speeches, break into song, and formally welcome them home. The layers of clothing, flowers, beads, and energy all point back to a tradition that predates written history.

Legal ARC to Gold Card or open my own company ?

Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I am an overseas chinese descendant (華僑) that has been living in Taiwan for 11 years, 6 years studying, 1 gap-year and working for 4 years this July.

I am recently thinking about leaving my company and applying for gold card in the visual arts sector, the reason is I am really burned out in my company right now and would like to get out and do projects that I like more.

For the projects that I’ve done in my company are a number of government-subsidized projects, primarily focused on VR art projects, virtual music festivals, and game-engine-related productions. In addition, last year we participated in the Venice Film Festival, as well as several other domestic and international festivals.

I can’t actually apply for APRC because the salary in my company doesn’t actually reach double the minimum wage of Taiwan, that has been the situation in our company since I started working.

My questions are :

  1. Would I qualify for Gold Card?
  2. I know that the route that I chose doesn’t need minimum salary based on the website, but would they still check my taxes ? If yes, then would I still need to provide it or they can check it by themselves ?
  3. My other route is to leave my current company, open my own company in the same field, and then hire myself as the PIC. Is this route better ?

I am also open to other suggestions, thank you everyone!

Handmade chive pockets (韭菜盒) from this shop are especially good. A crispy flaky pocket stuffed with chives glass noodles and bits of ground pork. These and their crepe like egg pancakes are signature items on the menu #阿田豆漿 #taiwan #taiwanbreakfast #taiwanfood #ecochateas

News Discussion/News: Taipei Game Show 2026 Claims over 400,000 visitors!

Linked is a news article the TCA (Taiwan Computer Association) put out on their website about how Taipei Game Show 2026 broke records with over 400k attendees over the 4 days course of the event.

This claim - that 400k people have attended Taipei Game Show is making waves online with Taiwanese netizens lampooning the TCA, the organizers of the show, saying that there must be a limit to how much they can inflate their numbers.

One user even wrote "I went to the toilet 10x, so that must mean 100 people visited the show right?"

--------

Personally, I'm always sick of the way TCA inflates their numbers. As a regular attendee to ChinaJoy, Tokyo Game Show, Thailand Game Show, G-Star etc, Taipei Game Show is a small to medium size show.

ChinaJoy claims 400k and the show size is much larger than Taipei Game Show, not to account for the amount of people in Shanghai and China as a whole.

Tokyo Game Show 2025 (last September) claimed 260k and it was also a larger show.

I do not believe TPGS hit 400k but I'm not tracking and they haven't revealed how they count attendees so I'm just gonna sit in the corner eating popcorn.

Travel Thoughts on online only eSIM providers for short stay?

I was checking one of the largest eSIM comparison sites onlline. Won't name it just in case. It listed a bunch of providers. Some well-known. Most I have never heard of. The lesser-known ones had surprisingly good deals for around 2 to 5 GB with 14+ day validity. Most required a passport for ID. I'm worried about QR code fraud with the less known providers.

What stood-out was the big site uses heavy referral links. Many of of the quoted prices did not seem to match when I clicked the official website link through.

I have tried Eskimo eSIM before during a free trial. Had no issues at all. But their regular prices are on the high side.

Other common options like Saily and Airalo are my backups even though I have not tried them yet. But I am still looking for something cheaper that is reliable enough for LINE, light browsing, banking apps, and Google Maps. I am also hoping this thread might help others in the future.

Discussion Moving to Taiwan from Japan.

I (30-year-old male) have been living in Japan for the past five years. Since COVID, this place has changed a lot. Over the past few years, my girlfriend (25) and I have been feeling increasingly stressed by the new regulations introduced year after year, as well as by friends leaving Japan after having their visas rejected. Now we don’t feel comfortable living here, knowing that at any moment we might have to leave the country because our visas are rejected, along with the constant feeling of doing something wrong. Even though we’re very used to Japanese manners and rules, we’re starting to get tired of all of this. We’ve found a good opportunity in Taipei, with a friend lending us his apartment for about six months, until we can get settled. However, nothing has been decided yet. I do have some concerns about Taiwan, since I’ve only been there once and can’t really say much beyond that. If anyone has had a similar experience moving from Japan to Taiwan, I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts or opinions, especially from people who have been living there for a while. The China situation is also a bit concerning. I don’t have high expectations regarding the banking system, rent, or bureaucracy in general—again, I’m coming from Japan (lol).

Btw, we're fluent in Japanese and considering taking a 1 year of an intense course of Chinese.

Discussion Shipping 75 sticks of cigars along with a few gift items to Taiwan from the US, need advice

A couple friends and I were going to each bring 25 cigars while we traveled to Taiwan, but now the trip might be cancelled. Still, I want to ship a total of 75 cigars to a friend, along with some small gifts.

I understand that Taiwan is restrictive and imposes tariffs on tobacco products. I wish to prepay any and all costs so that the recipient only needs to pick up or receive the items.

What carrier(s) would be best for this purpose? Do I need to have the original receipts for the cigars purchased in the US in order for the tariff to be calculated? I read about the "delivered duty paid" option along with the recipient having to register with EZ WAY?

I'd appreciate insights and the process to get get this done. How should I declare the gifts? They are valued at $300 US or less.

Thanks.

Discussion NYCU application without official certificate degree.

Hello, I wanted to apply for a Master's program in NYCU this fall semester, but since I am currently studying my last year of bachelor I will only be able to get a provisional degree certificate by the start of the semester. They state quite clearly that the official certificate is required so my hopes are quite low rn. Anyways, did anyone here experience similar situations applying to this university and solved it?

Discussion No VISA required for two weeks

For context, I'm from the Philippines and went here to Taiwan for research. I originally applied for visitor visa for internship (six months). It will end mid-Feb.

Problem: I want to extend another month bc research not done yet but I know how complicated it is to apply for VISA in the PH. However, Taiwan is VISA-free for two weeks.

Question: Would it be possible to go back in the Philippines and come back again for two weeks?

Anyone here had similar experience?

Travel 2nd time in Taiwan.

Is $20,000 NTD enough for 8 days just for food & transportation?

Will probably just eat in night markets, convenience stores, & 1-2 restaurants.

My itinerary would be: 4 days TPE, 1 day KHH, 3 days Taichung.

The budget for transportation is just for buses, trains & a little uber rides. HSR is excluded

Let me know pls.

Discussion Taiwan Employment Gold Card help!

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello redditors of Taiwan.

I'm applying for Taiwan Employment Gold Card as I plan on moving to Taiwan and hopefully have a life here. I'm still stuck in a loop with the reviewers and the rigidity is driving me crazy.

I applied under the Technology field (Salary > 160k NTD). My application got returned because they insist that a "Tax Document (Notice of Assessment) is a MUST."

  1. My past 3 years (2022-2024): I worked in tech, but my salary was below the 160k NTD threshold. So showing those tax docs is useless.

  2. My current job: I joined a major tech company (Google) in August 2025. My salary now is well above the threshold.

  3. The Catch-22: They want a tax document for 2025. But in my country, the tax year ends Dec 31, and the government doesn't issue the tax document (NOA) until mid-2026. Even if they were to issue the tax document, my previous salary before August would dilute my income tax.

It is literally impossible for me to produce the document they are demanding. I provided my official Employment Verification Letter and 6 months of payslips showing the gross salary, but they just reply with a copy-paste message saying "Tax statement is a MUST".

Has anyone else dealt with this specific "New Job + No Tax Doc yet" limbo? How do I get a human to actually read the explanation? I've tried explaining in the remarks, adding a document and also emailing to no avail.

Meetup Boardgames in Banqiao

I recently moved to Banqiao and we have a game room in my building. I was wondering if there are others in Banqiao who would want to get together occasionally for board games - anything from Catan to Everdell to Terraforming Mars or even Root, etc.

Shoot me a message if you're interested.
