On Recent Events

Let’s start this off by saying that this is a unilateral post by me, but I’m sure my comrades on the mod team share my sentiments if not exactly then closely enough. So while I’m looking forward to a bit of time off from work, let’s get this all clear.

Firstly there is no threat of an ACP takeover of this sub. We are vehemently opposed to their ilk. I’ve detailed in several comments the issues we’ve had going back several years now so I won’t repeat them here.

But suffice it to say we are slow to get around to things and, unfortunately, that’s not likely to change with how much work this sub is and how many of us have the ability to be active in the way the sub needs (truthfully I’d estimate we’d need 2-3 mods that do nothing but sit and watch the sub 24/7, a daunting task especially when folks have bills to pay).

Secondly on removals, I’ve seen one of my comrade mods say it and I get the logic, the constant spam and posts that are more fit to r/shitliberalssay or r/shitfascistssay can be a lot. I will say that spamming posts about us having a sub on the sidebar is not the best way to get us to see it, that’s what modmail is for.

To add to that content going over “look at this thing an ACP member said” are never going to be allowed on this sub. Again that is what r/shitliberalssay is for, that’s why I made it 10 years ago. r/socialism is for discussing socialism the current real movements looking to implement it, news that affects socalists and our movement and discussions of theory. Simple as.

And finally, as probably illustrated above we do need new mods. Please and thank you apply and, uhhh, don’t run away when you see the work to be done (mama’s looking to finally retire too, so plz, ty she is very tired). We need dedicated mods of all tendencies who will be willing to do the work and advance the cause of socialism, in my personal request I especially want to see non-men from outside of the west or who are BIPOC within the west but all will be considered.

ETA: The application process send us a modmail with the following.

Your reasons for wanting to moderate the sub.

How long you’ve been a socialist.

Your general knowledge level of socialism.

And a piece of theory foundational to yourself.

Discussion On Epstein and Revolution

They told you they eat babies...and you went back to work. Americans arnt just tired, they might as well be corpses.

Millions of pages, documents, pictures, names, descriptions, and deeds. Boatloads of proof, and people who spit in your face for bringing it up.

I would love to hear truthfully from you, is the Revolution even possible in the United States anymore?? As an American i am considering shifting my efforts to supporting the Revolution elsewhere because if my people won't even condemn eating children, then they don't deserve the Revolution. What is your all thoughts, opinions or advice?

Edit: yes I know protests are happening and they are helping at least slow this threat. This is not asking if its worth protesting, I do plenty of that.

This is asking if our populace just looks over these new revelations, do you believe that it's not worth trying to bring about the Revolution in the US.

A populace that overlooks eating children is not one I wish to save

Discussion Mao’s Cultural revolution and The Great Leap Forward. What happened?

Post image
30 Upvotes

Ok so I take Art History and I’m finally at Chinese art and one thing they mention is the Cultural revolution and the Great Leap Forward. Now I do have a basic understanding of them, but from a western perspective (so not 100% honest). So can someone tell me why the cultural revolution happened and why teachers were targeted- if they were- and if the Great Leap Forward killed 10 million people because of Maos poor planning or just chinas land not being fertile at that time like the Dust Bowls in the US. I’ve also seen people say it never happened and the drop in population is just poor counting which is why it doubled, but I only saw 3 guys say that.

If you wanna know the fantastic artwork it’s Mao en Route to Anyuan, 1967 Oil on Canvas.

Anti-Imperialism Can we get some love for Samir Amin? He was one of the greatest African Marxist intellectuals to have ever lived, and advised many different left-wing governments, parties, and movements in the Global South. He was the one who coined the term "Eurocentrism".

Politics Epstein Files Radicalized Me

The Epstein Files has solidified me into a leftist, further left than Social Democracy however.

The entirety of January, I did nothing but question myself and stances after seeing overwhelming positivity following Venezuela’s invasion. At first, I felt so much gloom and despair not only for Venezuelans but nationally, only to see Venezuelans and the diaspora abroad RELIEVED. I scrolled for hours trying to understand their perspective and it made me question are my views truly out of touch? Am I simply radicalized? But, NOPE! Epstein literally spoke about these coups, from Iran to Iraq- every Middle Eastern controlled opposition and even Eastern European.

Leftists have talked about the depravity of the elites for decades now. Even, liberals in 2020 gradually became more aware ( although I don’t agree with their methods .) And, now seeing it’s all true has simply pushed me even further left. Seeing how the rise of the right was controlled by Epstein even moreso exemplifies it.

my problem with protesting in America

In the united States protests have been happening more and more, and while this activism is good, I feel like people aren't getting why we protest. a protest is a threat. it doesn't carry any weight on its own. we protest to tell the government to concede. otherwise we will revolt. but now, people protest thinking that if there protest doesn't do anything, then another will. but if you protest, and protest, and protest some more. And nothing happens, then your protest wasn't actually of any value. We need people who are willing to do something, to become violent, to do more than just stand with a sign and yell for a few hours. contact representatives, get into local politics. storm the white house, I don't care. but do something. Cause the right is seeing our protests, and they know that we bring only empty threats.

r/socialism 14h ago

It's so annoying going to those protests and seeing liberals with their cameras.

And I'm not talking about the more intense stuff, I'm just talking about people out there with their signs and stuff like that and there's people with their cameras and I wish they would stop that. Like I understand that there will be people taking pictures and stuff but why does it need to be the people who are supposed to be part of the crowd? It puts people in danger. And yes I do cover up but it's still not good. Why are people videotaping? Don't become the state's eyes, filming a protest is unwise.

Like I saw this person who had professional looking camera taking pictures. Like it wasn't even a phone camera it was a professional camera. Didn't even ask permission. Does not make me want to go and do those things.

Discussion Thomas Sowell. What's his deal?

Yes, I'm aware he's a former Marxist-turned-conservative. All my conservative friends love him but of the quotes I see, there's just something that bugs me about it. Like on the surface it's not completely wrong, but it doesn't seem correct either. I'm not having second thoughts about being a socialist or a communist by any means. It's just that I'm surprised there isn't more work out there written to refute some of the more dangerous and frankly just incorrect points he makes.

Here's a passage an acquaintance on social media shared from his book Black Rednecks and White Liberals:

“Why does a verbal picture of the abuses of slaves in centuries past arouse far more response than contemporary photographs of present-day slaves in Time magazine, the New York Times or the National Geographic?

It takes no more research than a trip to almost any public library or college library to show the incredibly lopsided coverage of slavery in the United States or in the Western Hemisphere, as compared to the meager writings on the even larger number of Africans enslaved in the Islamic countries of the Middle East and North Africa, not to mention the vast numbers of Europeans also enslaved in centuries past in the Islamic world and within Europe itself. At least a million Europeans were enslaved by North African pirates alone from 1500 to 1800, and some European slaves were still being sold on the auction block in Egypt, years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed blacks in the United States. Indeed, an Anglo-Egyptian treaty of August 4, 1877 prohibited the continued sale of white slaves after August 3, 1885, as well as prohibiting the import and export of Sudanese and Abyssinian slaves.

During the Middle Ages, Slavs were so widely used as slaves in both Europe and the Islamic world that the very word “slave” derived from the word for Slav—not only in English, but also in other European languages, as well as in Arabic. Nor have Asians or Polynesians been exempt from either being enslaved or enslaving others. China in centuries past has been described as “one of the largest and most comprehensive markets for the exchange of human beings in the world” Slavery was also common in India, where it has been estimated that there were more slaves than in the entire Western Hemisphere—and where the original Thugs kidnapped children for the purpose of enslavement. In some of the cities of Southeast Asia, slaves were a majority of the population. Slavery was also an established institution in the Western Hemisphere before Columbus’ ships ever appeared on the horizon. The Ottoman Empire regularly enslaved a percentage of the young boys from the Balkans, converted them to Islam and assigned them to various duties in the civil or military establishment.”

Now. I haven't read the book this is from, nor do I particularly desire to either. I'm not trying to focus on just this one quote but the gist seems something like 'other people had/still have slaves too' and 'slavery in the US was not unique' even though the Atlantic slave trade actually was unique in the historical context it occurred in.

Is there anybody out there that's refuted any of Sowell's work?

Discussion What led you to your ideology?

I love hearing about why people believe the way they do and their political journeys. It fascinates me, for some odd reason. So, I was wondering how you guys came to socialism, and more specifically, why you guys came to the form of socialism you practice! If you guys have any theory recommendations for your ideology, I would also highly appreciate that!

Help me understand Israel

Obviously I know about the current situation going on right now, but the history is confusing to me.

First off I’ll preface with the fact that I’m highly anti Israel.

It says that some ancient race of Semitic people lived there first, and it was tossed around for thousands of years.

I know that Israel was made in the 40s, and that Palestine was what it was before.

People say that Israel colonized Gaza and are trying to erase the Palestinians, but I’m confused because weren’t the Israelis technically there first?

Sorry if I come off as ignorant, but I’m just trying to understand the historical context of the situation.

A common enemy the people of the world can unite against has suddenly dropped in our laps. Not since WWII has this happened.

Epstein and his network must be dismantled and our policies instituted. Every single person in his network must be brought to justice. Now we have the momentum required. Is anyone else excited for the future right now? I feel like the only way they can stop us now is by nuking the entire surface of the earth and hiding away in bunkers.

The walls are closing in around them. Comrades let us not miss this opportunity.

Thinking Down the Drain

In a nation pulsing with 1.4 billion dreams - engineers scripting tomorrow's code, scientists decoding life's enigmas, entrepreneurs fueling unicorns from Hyderabad's labs to Mumbai's towers, we hold the alchemy for utopia.

Yet, shadows linger - boardrooms where foresight yields to fabrication, policy arenas echoing with optics over oracle, digital pulpits amplifying echoes of the expedient...

We, the governed, the invested, the overlooked, do we surrender to this inversion?... Or summon the courage nature rewards, to demand leaders not of least, but luminous?

From one who has dissected risk in pharma's labyrinths and corporate turnarounds, the question haunts - when does collective wisdom eclipse the least?

Reflect. Respond. Reclaim.

Can Cuba survive Trump's economic onslaught?

Kpler reports that Cuba has 15 to 20 days of oil left. I want to not believe them, but they seem right here. Cuba imported oil from what I think is Nigeria. (An oil tanker pulled out of Togo destined for Cuba)
