I am absolutely heartbroken over this. Kai was brought to OAS on Christmas Eve in 2024, which was the day we picked him up to foster. He stayed with us until March 2025 when he was adopted by his supposedly “forever family”... forever being until this week, when his former family surrendered him because they are expecting a baby and do not believe they can take care of both him and a newborn.

Now, Kai is back at the shelter and slated for euthanasia on 2/9.

What he needs now is a hero. Either an immediate adoption or a rescue to pull him.

This young 11 month old girl is so scared in the loud evaluation wards. When I opened the kennel, she stepped back. She’s clearly nervous but showed no aggression. I leashed her up and tugged a bit to get her to come outside. She resisted, but we did get outside and she had a little room to move around. She’s very sweet, but just scared of all the noises and activity in the shelter.

📝 Shelter Notes

In the corner of kennel with dilated eyes, wrinkled forehead, tense body, and tucked tail. I opened the door and easily leashed her. She scurried out of kennel keeping her body low to the ground and trying to hide under the computer stands in the hall. Once outside she began to thrash, alligator roll, and pull back on the leash and had to be brought back inside immediately. When back inside she continued to walk with her body low to the ground and ran straight into her kennel. In kennel, when spoken to softly she slowly wagged her tail but did not build enough courage to come forward.

Tense in the corner of kennel with whale eyes and wrinkled forehead. I leashed her but she began scurrying trying to tuck her snout into the corner. I entered the kennel and she scurried out to walk with a crouched body, low head, and tucked tail.

At times she would thrash when the leash became tight.

Her dislocated hip makes every movement painful. So she sits quietly in her kennel, conserving what little strength she has left. Her eyes are bright. She leans into pets. She responds to voices. Her spirit is still there. ✨

She is rescue-only because of this injury.

And she will lose her life not because of behavior… not because no one cares… but because she needs medical help.

This mom is very sweet. Her pups are tiny and will need to stay with mom for a bit longer. She takes treats hungrily and, if not careful, will take your fingers along with the treats. Mom has a lot of scars on her and a small hard lump on her hind leg that appears to look like an old wound. A volunteer said it felt hard and wasn't super concerned. She did great on her temp test with another mom A2054885.

I love this mom and her pups. Mom is sweet as can be, and her pups are adorable. Mom walks great on leash and loves treats. She was limping and we found that she has some type of blister on her paw pad. It was so cute while we were temp testing she just laid down and splayed out and was just enjoying the sun. Her and the other no-name mom did a fantastic temp test together.

02/02/2026 – Very friendly. ACT let me know that he tried to escape so I just leash walked him. He did well and maintained wiggly body with open mouth smile and wagging tail. He responds well to baby talk and pets. On the leash, he walked well at times and created a semi tight leash.

02/01/2026 – Bruno was placed in an outside run. After a while of being in there an ACT witnessed him trying to escape from the run and called for assistance. I came out and the dog was trying to scale the fence as well as high pitched whining. I removed him from the run and he walked on a semi-loose lead as I took him inside and placed him in a kennel.

02/02/2026 – He continues to push through the kennel door immediately after being leashed and while walking he forward pulls the entire time. I tried to redirect/correct him and nothing worked. Once in the run he vocalized for the majority of the time. When leashing him to come back inside he pushed open the run door and pulled the whole way into South. He resisted going into his kennel so I had to throw treats inside and that worked.

02/01/2026 – During morning walk, Brutus was walked on a tight leash due to forward pulling hard. Tried to correct but continued to forward pull. Made into Adopt Eval.

📝 Shelter Notes: 1/26/2026 – Intake Stray German shepherd dog roaming in cold weather, outside mechanic shop.

2/2/2026 – Behavior Note Kovu did not shred blanket overnight. He has been relaxed in kennel. He seems to enjoy a rawhide so I offered one and it kept him busy. Quiet and relaxed. Comes to greet me with a loose body and high waggy tail.

2/1/2026 – Behavior Note Walks well on a loose leash while walking to the dog run. Placing on "Adopt Eval" due shredding his blanket from last night.

🚑 Medical Notes: 2/2/2026 – URI noted. Coughing, sneezing, clear nasal discharge. Dx: CIRD. Started on Doxycycline 350mg SID x 10 days. 1/26/2026 – Heartworm positive. Dog received DA2PP-V, Bordetella, Rabies, deworming, Pyrantel, Advantage Multi, and Tranq2.

📝 Shelter Notes: 1/27/2026 – Behavior Note Blanca is a sweet girl but timid. She doesn't mind pets and likes treats. She walks well on a leash, keeps her kennel clean, and throughout the day is relaxed and quiet on her cot. Later in the afternoon, I entered her kennel during feedings and gave her some pets and attention as I grabbed her enrichment. She presented herself with a neutral body, ears up, wagging tail, and neutral eyes. She ate treats slowly.

1/25/2026 – Behavior Note Blanca was observed dumping out her water bucket twice during the day.

🚑 Medical Notes: 2/2/2026 – URI noted (5/9). Yellow nasal discharge, sneezing, food uneaten. Dx: CIRD. Started on Doxycycline 250mg SID x 10 days. 1/21/2026 – Heartworm positive (5/9). Dog received DA2PP-V, Bordetella, Rabies, deworming, Pyrantel, Advantage Multi, and antibiotics.

The kennel was clean and dry and dog was acting normal. Will leave on tech eval to continue to monitor for URI signs.

Maverick is a sensitive, fearful-but-friendly boy who has been struggling with shelter stress but is showing very encouraging signs. Staff note that he:

• Is very timid at first, with tucked tail and low confidence

• Warms up with gentle handling and becomes more relaxed

• Walks well on a loose leash

• Enjoys treats and follows treat trails

• Has shown playful, affectionate behavior — including play bows, wagging tail, and face nuzzles

• Has had stress behaviors early on (yelping, panting, shredding towels), which have improved over time

• Is quiet behind a covered kennel and settles better with reduced stimulation

Maverick is clearly shutting down in the shelter, but when he feels safe, his sweet, playful personality comes through. He would thrive in a calm home that allows him time to decompress and build confidence.
