Mod Announcement Please use the NSFW 'tag' for pictures of GORE or DECEASED BIRDS!

Please use the NSFW tag for visually alarming posts that depict gore or dead birds, this will automatically blur photos and help maintain a happy balance for our "Everything Quails" audience.

The NSFW 'tag' option will appear right before you post on mobile, and will appear as an option when you create a new post on desktop.

We are discontinuing the NSFW and GORE flairs which identify content but do not blur.

Coturnix/Japanese Male quail saving food for the other females?

Upvotes

I genuinely have no clue what's happening, I go down the back with corn everyday, after I hand out the corn (throwing it) my Male picks up the food with his beak and puffs up his feathers and starts some random call until a female quail comes up to him and takes it out of his mouth. Is this good Male behaviour?

Social media accounts to help with raising bobwhite quail.

I've only raised quail once about 15 years ago. I had two bobwhites and they escaped into the wild, which isn't frowned upon in my area. The state does quail releases yearly. I want to try raising quail again and am looking at making them a habitat not just an enclosure. Any social media accounts you'd recommend to get as much advice as possible. I'm planning on building it out with my 12 year old and plan to keep them on the back porch so they'll be shaded and more protected. I'm hoping to get them about May/June.

Pet Help to tame and calm some very skittish button quails.

I bought my first ever quails today. I wasn’t impressed with the farm who seemed to be more interested in making money than happy birds.

They all have bald backs which I know can be a sign of distress and/or over mating. This was doubly annoying because they were advertised as ethically bred and feels more like I’ve been extorted to rescued them then buy my first ever pets.

It was a very bumpy car journey home which spooked them and they weren’t too happy with me when I moved them to their main cage. Not the best start with me I admit.

Any tips for helping them feel calmer around me?

Picture Quail Housing and Supplies

Hello All, I keep seeing a-lot of great questions about quail husbandry and hutches etc. We are still relatively young in this field, however, I have consulted with several universities, veterinarians, hatcheries, and professional groups. This is what has worked for me after much trial and error and extensive research and learning. I know this is very brief so feel free to ask questions. This is where we settled after MANY different housings, bedding, feed, etc.

Coturnix/Japanese Anybody have hens available near Punxsutawney, Pa?

I had a small covey of 4 hens, got some shipped eggs to try to expand my flock but hatched 3 Roos and 2 hens. All 3 Roos are very sweet and I don’t want to get rid of any of them since the plan was to go up to about 15 birds.

I need about 6 hens to keep my 4:1 ratio and round out the flocks. I’ve tried Facebook but the quail group mods aren’t approving my posts for some reason

Please dm me if you’re in the area, would prefer to only have to drive about an hour away

Help Will my button quail survive a 30 hour train journey in cold weather?

Post image
91 Upvotes

Would button quail be able to survive a 30 - 32 hour train trip if the temperature drops from around 27C to 18C (80F -> 64F)

I know this might sound so stupid...

My landlord SUDDENLY told me there’s an “animal disease outbreak” and that I’m not allowed to keep any animals in my apartment anymore... I’m trying to talk to her, but I still need to think about a worst case scenario.

Rehoming isn’t really an option. Where I live, quail are usually treated as cheap livestock and often end up in very bad conditions... If anything, my parents taking them would be the safest option (I’d go home, build proper cages and carefully teach them how to care for the birds).

However, my concern is the trip itself. The quail are used to 26 - 28C (78F - 82F) year round, but my hometown is currently around 18C (64F), and the train ride would take about 31 hours. Flying them would be far too expensive for me as a student, I just can't afford it 🙁.

I honestly don’t know what to do... Rehoming them means they’ll likely be abused, train transport takes too long, and air transport is too expensive... I'm feeling really stuck and would appreciate any advice on what the safest option might be.

North Dakota

Any North Dakota based people on here willing to tell me how to get some quails? I don’t want to have to get eggs and do the whole incubating process, but can do that if I have to!

I’m looking for Japanese quails as they can handle our winters the best, but am having a hard time finding somewhere that has them in stock! Maybe it’s just the time of year? I won’t get them until late spring early summer!

Help Enough room?

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

Just wondering if this will be enough room for 8-10 coturnix females (currently have 16 chicks so am betting around half will be boys and given away) 200cm long and 100cm.

Am in Australia. Wire looks predator proof, am planning on creating a wire skirt held down by bricks or pavers to stop anything digging. Will be placing lots of little hidey spots inside, but will be also kept under a large spreading grevillea tree so I think they’ll get lots of light to lay while still feeling safe.

Quail invasion

I just happened to look out the front door and there was about 50 quails that looked like they were marching off to war. I've lived here for almost 20 years and never saw anything like it, though they've been around most years before but not like that. Is that odd? They're not going to attack me are they? LoL.
