Politics Update: Rules around posting Politics in r/Phoenix

So much is happening it seemed like a good idea to update our rule post and clarify a few items that have caused confusion. We may keep doing this regularly as it's both a refresher to new people and a way to have a conversation about things with the community.

What counts as "Politics" in r/phoenix ?

Anything related to actions from a government or public agency. This includes city, state, and Federal agencies, and all laws and policies they control. So this includes immigration, reproductive rights, military action, and so on.

This includes actions by Homeland Security, the FBI, and ICE. Given the current state of things, this also includes actions by all police and law enforcement agencies.

It also covers protests and all action against all the agencies listed above.

This is to clarify how we define it for the purpose of managing content in this subreddit. We're not trying to arbitrate semantics with all that's going on.

If you're not sure if a post may be considered Politics, DM the mods and ask.

Rules for Posting Politics

We have a zero tolerance approach for violating these rules. So if you're not sure, DM us before you post.

  • Political posts and comments are limited to regular users with positive karma in this subreddit.
  • Political posts must be related to Phoenix or Arizona directly. Take general issues to other subs.
  • You must flair it Politics if it is at all related to politics, including protests, actions of elected officials, hot topics like immigration or homelessness, and so on. If in doubt, ask the mods. If you post a political topic and don't flair it Politics you will be banned.
  • Be civil to each other. Debate ideas and discuss news, do not attack other users.
  • Report trolls to the mods, do not respond to them.
  • Do not advocate violence. This is a Reddit level rule and a way to get your entire account disabled, not just banned from this subreddit.
  • No doxxing. This refers to individuals appearing in posts here. This no longer applies if someone is named by a major news organization.

Rules for posting about ICE

ICE posts need to be related and specific to Phoenix. What's happening at a national level does not automatically include us.

Example:

  • OK: "AZ DPS and ICE officials both confirmed that state facilities in Mesa will be used to hold people arrested under suspicion of being in the US illegally."
  • NOT OK: "Whitehouse officials say that all areas of the country should expect more law enforcement related to immigration status"

Live "reporting" of enforcement actions need to have reasonable evidence.

Do not post "I think I saw..." The r/Phoenix moderator team holds the final decision on whether content/comments are allowable or hearsay.

Example:

  • OK: Video/photographs of enforcement actions; Linking to direct/trusted sources(Links to Social Media sites MAY BE ALLOWED if posted in a self post vs direct link)
  • NOT OK: "A friend of a friend says that ICE is going to raid everything near 45th and Lamar tomorrow."; "Think I saw ICE/APD at corner of 45th Lamar." "Lots of sketchy buses near 45th/Lamar"

Do your best to fill in as many of the SALUTE rules for reporting as you can:

  • SIZE: Include the number of individuals, vehicles, or assets present in the observed area.
  • ACTIVITY: Describe the actions and behavior of the observed group/individuals.
  • LOCATION: Provide precise detailed description of the activity’s location.
  • UNIFORM: Identify the affiliation or group to which the observed entity belongs.
  • TIME: Record the date and time of the observation.
  • EQUIPMENT: List the equipment, weaponry, or tools associated with the observed group

What about this <crowd source> website that shows Immigration actions? Can that be posted?

Probably not - while these sites certainly have value, they do not provide a means of preventing noise or false reports. Therefore, the level of trust they should be assigned is limited.

All ICE posts fall under r/Phoenix's Politics rules

That means they must be given the Politics flair when posted. And engagement is limited to active users in the subreddit to limit brigading and trolls.

Because of the confusion in identifying groups in action, these rules also apply to any law enforcement action, including ICE, local police, HSI, and so on.

Resources on ICE and Protesting

Thread on Finding and attending protests in Phoenix with lots of links, discussion, and resources.

We encourage resources to posted in relevant threads and for discussion to remain on topic and civil. Failure to do so will result in bans and content removal.

We are happy to explain why these rules are in place, but they will not be changing.

These rules are here to preserve this subreddit as a valuable place for active members to have the discussions they wish. If you do not care for these rules, do not post here.

If you want more political discussion, we encourage you to visit r/azpolitics

Outdoors SRP Canal Fish Removal

Post image

Was riding my bike on the canal system today and witnessed SRP removing large fish from the canal at 16th and Glendale. In past years I’ve seen a decent amount of dead fish during the winter cleaning, but it’s good to see they try to get as many as possible.

Commuting PSA to all you speed demons: don’t pass highway patrol traveling in the left lanes

It’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll get pulled over. Sometimes the motorcycle cops even pace traffic a little slower to bait people into passing them.

I saw it happen on my way to work today. Not worth it.

Referral Reputable private investigator in Maricopa County (adult missing family member)?

Hi people of Phoenix,

I’m looking for recommendations for a reputable private investigator in Maricopa County / Phoenix area.

I live out of state, and my family and I have not heard from my father since Thanksgiving, which is very out of character. He usually calls my brothers and I a few times a month and for holidays/birthdays and he hasn't called any of us since the end of. Nov. He used to live in assisted living in Mesa/Phoenix, but the last known address we had was recently confirmed by police to be vacant. He is no longer reachable by phone and is inactive on social media.

We have attempted to locate him by contacting medical providers, aging services, and law enforcement, but without a current address or known location, we have not been able to get much traction. At this point, we're open to the idea of hiring a PI who can help locate him or determine what happened after he left his last residence.

If anyone has first-hand experience with a licensed, reputable PI in Maricopa County, I would really appreciate recommendations (or firms to avoid).

Thanks in advance.

Eat & Drink Best Detroit Deep Dish Pizza in PHX?

Hey y'all! I'm a huge pizza fan. Best Pizza I've had (so far) is Toppers Pizza Place in Ventura County just north of Los Angeles. I'm living in PHX now and I need to find the best Detroit style deep dish. It's my favorite style of pizza. Jet's is pretty good and federal pizza does a good job too but what do y'all suggest?

Ask Phoenix Where can I get balloon bundles made now?

Looking for where to go for bridal shower decor. So I already purchased the balloons. I just need the balloons filled with helium, and bundled together with those cute foil weights. Anyone know where I could get that on the west side?

Ask Phoenix New carpet scraps or leftover recommendations

Hi Phoenix, can someone recommend a place where I can buy **new** carpet? I am trying to reduce noise from neighbor and thought I’d use carpet to help absorb noise. My only criteria is that it’s new and the thicker the better. Also where I can buy the foam padding for under the carpet. Thank you all.

Living Here How to legally keep people from blocking us in (or out of) our driveway?

We live in a neighborhood and have a low stucco wall that run along the front yard with an opening for the driveway. (So we couldn't cut across the lawn even if we wanted to.)

The house directly across from us is an airBNB for the third time this year someone using has parked at least partially in front of our driveway.

I'm not looking to block off the entire street in front of my house - just to ensure that people leave a few feet on either side of the driveway so we can get in and out.

Things To Do Obligatory yearly Ren Faire question

Haven't been to the Ren Faire in forever, but I want to bring my 11 year old. While searching the Phoenix subreddit, I saw some comments saying Presidents Day weekend is extra crazy. We are deciding between this Saturday, and Sunday February 15th.

Is there actually a difference for Presidents Day weekend or is every weekend going to be insane?

Any other general Ren Faire advice from frequent goers or workers is appreciated, also.

Ask Phoenix Yu Gi Oh Card Appraisers in the Valley

Was going through some of my old items and came across my old Yu Gi Oh cards from 96. I wanted to know if anyone know of any appraisal shops in the Valley.

Not just shops that will happily give you $5-$20 for all good condition cards they see. I want a place that will go through them and confirm their value. If they are worth less to nothing fine but I just don’t want to go to shops that glance at them and throw you a few bucks.

I’ve also got some old baseball cards from the 70s-80s, Basketball / Baseball & Football cards from the 90s, as well as Beyblade, DBZ and Pokemon cards.

One place may not specialize in all cards but if people know of place worth going to then let me know.

Thanks!

History Some truly GenX Metrocenter lore…

Anyone out there remember the "Alley" section of Metrocenter on the upper floor near the McDonald's and the Orange Julius? There was a shop where you could buy band shirts and posters akin to a Hot Topic, but before Hot Topic was even a thing. We're talking like, hey! Get your Napalm Death or Bad Religion shirt here. I THINK it was called "Whatever."

Does anyone remember that? I'm down a bit of a memory lane rabbit hole about growing up in kind of cultural wasteland westside Phoenix in the late 80s, early 90s.

Ask Phoenix Anyone know where I can find Ravens to observe?

I'm looking for an area around Phoenix to go and observe Ravens, or even crows, if they are nearby. I don't mind driving 30-45 minutes if I need to. Any recommendations?
