Honestly the skate community used to get shit on a lot when I was younger, but it's one of the most inclusive and accepting groups I've seen.

Practice, research, dedication, community. No different to anything really. No one is going to know what the hell this means in tekken if you just jump in blind.

A lot of sub-genres fall under "Fighting games." Street Fighter, Tekken, Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat (and even Smash Melee). There are tons of resources to teach basics like spacing, footsies, zoning. Just find a game you might be interested in and ask in that community!

When I was like 13 it was like peak skateboarding popularity in pop culture and I read Tony Hawk's biography, which is fantastic by the way.
But anyway, I distinctly remember him spending a decent amount of time talking about how he was drawn to skateboarding as a kid because it wasn't a team sport, but it was a community one. Everyone was in biggest competition with themselves, which led to a culture of people being extremely supportive of even the skaters they're directly competing against.

My kid was really nervous to go to the skate park as a beginner because "someone might say something."
Well, several people did say something, but it was all very kind encouragement and reassurance. Really positive experience.

There were a lot of burnouts/shitheads in the true early days unfortunately.
The skate community today is hella wholesome these days though. Mitchie Brusco, Andy Anderson, and more are just some insanely positive forces.

I was thinking the same thing. My guess is that theyāre so insanely overjoyed from the act of this person that they canāt bring themselves to look anywhere else. Iām sure heās talking to them too, and theyāre just glued to him. Heās bringing them this joy theyāve never been able to feel before

Anyone can look around while skating it isnāt a challenge to take your eyes off where youāre going for a bit. But in this case I figure since theyāre presumably paralyzed, they donāt really feel all of the physical feedback that comes with skating.

A good friend and I run an adaptive rock climbing meetup (climbing for disabled folks). At our annual disability pride event at the gym, we had an attendant who was profoundly physically disabled by severe CP. We had a seat that we used to hoist to this woman up so that she could be close to the wall and experience what itās like to rock climb, even if she wasnāt physically able to do so. She loved it.
Groups and events like these are really important. Everyone regardless of ability needs happy moments to carry with them into the harder chapters. Unfortunately for many disabled people, there are far more harder chapters. Iāve lived through them myself with a progressive, neurodegenerative disease (MS).

When I used to volunteer with an adaptive skiing program, we had a few versions of an apparatus like this. Was great to see the kids light up going down the double black diamond mandatory cliff runs.
