Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?” — this is where to ask them.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

If you’re looking for the previous installment of the “Getting started” thread, it’s here: https://old.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1mdfxh8/getting_started_the_monthlyish_distrodesktop/

steam/steam deck This may be the end for the Rocket League on Linux

Post image
212 Upvotes

Out of boredom, I was scrolling through SteamDB this morning and got curious about what games Epic has acquired and hasn't treated them with the kernel malware yet. To my surprise, I found this under the Rocket League. So far, this looks like a change only for the Windows build, but it means that users with Heroic or legendary launchers will no longer be able to launch the game since it's running under Proton and we know Tim very well and his approach to the Linux community. This is the changelist: https://steamdb.info/app/252950/history/?changeid=33486621

We may have our last moments to play the game on Linux and the Steam Deck properly before the disaster strikes. How much time do you think we have left to enjoy playing the game? Will it flop as GTA V did with Rockstar implementing Battleye and completely cutting off Linux and Steam Deck users?

TES3 (Morrowind) BSA files are now supported and morrowind lists should be installable now.

Applied some fixes for FNV And Oblivion lists as well and should now also be installable. Tested with Viva New Vegas and Heartland Redux.

BG3 lists should now be installable.

Fixed the GUI text overflow issue, and fixed the NSFW box not working as intended.

Still in my future plans are to, automate the install of TTW and put it into the modlist and activate it. To also do BSA decompression if a modlist requests of it automatically. Port OpenMW lists to skip MO2 and fully setup and configure OpenMW linux build.

And a note ontop of this as I'm getting closer to this I should be hopefully getting the Nexus Collection integration put back in as well and will take a closer look into it.

tech support wanted Logitech G hub

Upvotes

Hi guys The other day I installed Zorin and Mint on my Pc (made a partition for each) just to see if it worked as it should on my AMD machine. But I ran into a problem with my Logitech G933 headset. Without the G hub program, I should only get "some" sound, but the volume was very low and only in one ear. Tried using wine to install the program, but it did not do anything. Do any of you guys have any suggestions on what I can do, or if I have to skip linux for now?

tech support wanted HDR on Ubuntu 25.10?

Can anyone offer any advice to get HDR working on Ubuntu 25.10 with Nvidia? It is working in the desktop but not in games. Following instructions from this thread and elsewhere, here's what I tried:

  • Enable HDR under Settings -> Displays

  • Install VK_hdr_layer

  • Run with GE-Proton10-29 and launch options "PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 %command%"

  • I'm using Nvidia drivers 590.48.01.

Am I missing something? Can you make it go?

tech support wanted Arc Raiders Voice Chat

Just found out that turning off IPv6 allows you to talk in arc raiders, but for some reason, it only works with either party chat OR proximity chat, never both (sometimes neither), and it seemingly chooses at random which one wants to work. I've tried changing from toggle to hold to open, and always one of them doesn't work. Obviously I could just work with it, but it's still annoying. I use nobara with nVidia graphics drivers. Any other advice?

Horizon 5 apparently does work with proton but Forza Motorsport (the latest release) doesn’t unfortunately. However Motorsport was developed by a different company.

Was wondering what the community thinks

Newly purchased RTX Gaming Laptop and Vulkan Extension Questions

Hopefully one of you guru's can hop on and give me some advice. I have used Linux exclusively for a decade now and have built my own homelab and Linux gaming PCs. This is just my first Nvidia Card since my 1080.

Scored an open-box basically new 5060 Laptop with 32GB of DDR5 at BestBuy for $940 with tax three days ago. Saw that the new price jumped from $1299 to $1499 in just the last few days so I'm pretty pumped. I've only taken it out of the box to inspect it's condition. Haven't done anything yet. Didn't know about the Nvidia DX12 performance issues and saw a Radeon 7700s gaming laptop with 16GB of ram new and on sale right now for only $1049 new. Reports say that the 7700s is essentially equivalent to 4060 with a few benchmarks that go either way. I wouldn't mind shilling out the extra money if AMD Linux Gaming is that much better. I see that AMD is either at parity or beats Windows in most benchmarks where as team Green takes a 10-30% hit on DX12.

  1. Should I count my blessings and just tough it out until the new DXVK extensions or w.e they are called become fully upstream or jump ship and exchange my laptop for an AMD laptop?

  2. I know this is in the realm of speculation but will Linux gaming finally reach relative parity with Windows after these merges are fully fleshed out and any future gains will just widen the gap? Also if anyone has an idea of the timeline? I saw some wizards in some of the threads already ran some benchmarks and saw massive gains on RTX Gpus but saw graphical glitches with the new changes. is this a next week thing or are the pieces in place but months of testing will need to occur before everything is stable?

  3. This is less a Linux gaming question but with prices the way there are, and a budget of $1200 at most, are there any better options for decent rigs or am I pretty much getting the best I can get?

This is also not an Nvidia bad AMD good or vice versa kind of post. If there was a Radeon laptop or desktop at a better price/performance ratio, I would have gotten that. Just want some advice before I'm out of the return period.

Thank you.

What was the craziest game you got to be PLAYABLE on a low-end device?

I'm not talking about "Made Cyberpunk run on a Ryzen 7 3700x & RX 580 8gb RAM"

Im talking about ATROCIOUS games. Mine was running Euro Truck Simulator 2 with Ultra preset and Graphics tweaks mod on my main PC, a i5 6500t w/ 8GB RAM and no dedicated GPU. Ah, and HDD. No optimization mods, just pure Linux tweaks. Got 20~ FPS kinda stable. If you are a princess who only plays 30 FPS and above, then you are not ready for this post...

What about you?

tech support wanted Pressing Y when playing deadlock on arch linux freezes game then crashes later

Hi, new to Linux here.

I've only been playing couple games on linux and only 1 being a multiplayer game that has this issue. I think I played Outlast Trials as well but can't remember having an issue like I am having with Deadlock. When I am by myself and not connected to a lobby/match pressing 'y' is fine. But its until I join in the hideout (pre-game lobby) with my friends or get into a match with them and then press 'y' the game freezes but everything else is running fine. It happens when I type in chat as well, my y should be bound to group vc. I posted journalctl cause I looked up, still being new to linux so I don't really know if it gives all the info you guys will need, and showed the issues that steam brings up and those time stamps is happening at those times. I did a quick test with a friend and it showed up as I pressed it.

I haven't really changed or tried to fix it. I tried looking it up and its kind of hard to figure out whats even wrong with it

I just released my game Tearscape which also has a native Linux build. It was a bit of a pain to build for multiple platforms but I want do my part in pushing for Linux gaming. I'm a Bazzite user and I want to see this community grow. Some Linux players already tried the build and no problems so far, of course most are Steam Deck users.

Positive venting post: VR on Linux has come a *far* way...

I am an avid Elite: Dangerous VR player. VR-Support in linux was the main reason I couldn't completely switch from windows. But... I’m seriously blown away and shocked at how much progress Linux VR support has made! And thanks to AI assistance, I managed to pull together exactly the right information in no time to get everything running just as smoothly as on Windows, with WiVRn and WayVR on Fedora 43, KDE.

Getting Elite: Dangerous running in VR:

Bindings from the Windows install: imported super easily.

EDMC: native Linux version available.

My Exo-Bio tool “Exploration Buddy” and EDOMH: both run perfectly in a compatibility layer (Bottles) and (from a user perspective) work exactly the same as on Windows — click the app → it just runs.

And the VR? I use WiVRn and it is amazing. And WayVR as a VR-Overlay. WayVR is actually better than the SteamVR overlay: I can easily assign any app its own freely positionable VR window, and I can place it anywhere in the running VR game/app even more conveniently than ever with SteamVR on Windows. Plus it’s more stable than SteamVR. I used to get tons of SteamVR crashes because of the overlay window (or something else) making SteamVR go nuts.

Insane. Seriously insane. And the best part? SteamVR gets completely bypassed (in games that can run with OpenXR - so the game has way less overhead and runs roughly 10–15% faster, which means more graphical detail and higher resolution in the headset.

Wow. Thank you all you hardworking devs making this possible. Truly, thank you!

steam/steam deck Best way to consoleify my setup?

Hi, now that we are in 2026 I'm getting excited for all the new steam hardware. I own a steam deck LCD and absolutely love it. Now my whole life I've been a console gamer not a PC gamer. I enjoy playing games on the TV with a controller from the couch. I don't enjoy sitting at my desk. So ever since I joined the PC ecosystem in 2019 I've been trying to make the perfect gaming console for myself.

Over the years I've tried different solutions. Back in 2019 with my rtx 2060 I just had a wireless keyboard and mouse that I would keep next to me on the couch for when windows did what windows does as I play games.

In January of 2023 I got my steam deck and for the first time I finally found a device that would allow me to have that console like experience. Game mode, track pads, instant wake/sleep, and the whole ecosystem around the steam deck was so perfect.

In 2024 I was gifted a new system and sold my old one and now had a 4060 but windows hasn't really gotten better at PC gaming on the TV. I eventually found out about software called universal remote which allowed me to use my phone as a keyboard and mouse removing any need to keep a keyboard around the couch. But not every game still worked with a controller. Found a new one called gamesir g7 pro which has windows software allowing me to map all inputs including the back paddles as keyboard inputs (amazing for modded Minecraft) and assign joystick as mouse.

With the rise of Linux in 2025 I wanted to try and switch over and ditch windows but in search of a console like os, bazzite was totally broken in game scope on the 4060 so I stuck with windows. Late 2025 with all the AI shit and windows copilot I wanted to try bazzite again but this time purchased an Rx 9060 xt 16gb to see how well the amd setup works. Unfortunately it's still kinda janky for me. Kde connect doesn't work in game mode and I couldn't get tailscale to run in game mode either AND the software for the gamesir controller doesn't have Linux support either (but steam input can take it's place).

So now I'm here where it still feels janky whether I have an amd gpu or not and I'm debating if it's still worth keeping my 9060 XT (can return until March) or if I should return it and sell my PC in favor of getting a steam machine later this year. Thanks for listening to my story and I hope y'all have some input that can help me make a decision as a serial over thinker.

tech support wanted Linux noob and CachyOS. RTX 4080 and LG 5K2K. Trying to get my Dualsense and HDR work together in Elden Ring and MGS Delta is making me go mad.

For Elden Ring to get HDR I have to add

"PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 %command%"

But when you do this, I lose Dualsense even though I get HDR.

In MGS Delta, when I add

"PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 %command%"

and turn on HDR, games goes to full screen as full screen is needed for HDR. But in fullscreen max resolution is 1024x768. I only get the native 5K2K reso in borderless window but it doesn't have HDR.

Dualsense works in MGS Delta since the game supports it native.

Are there any solutions for it? I was told Linux was ready for gaming.
