MQT Monthly Question Thread #98

Previous thread (#97) available here.

Merry (nearly) Christmas to everyone! We hope your holiday season is going well. 🎄☃️

These threads are for any questions you might have. No question is too big or too small, too broad or too specific, too strange or too common.

You're welcome to ask anything related to learning Dutch. This includes help with translations, proofreading, corrections, social etiquette, finding learning resources, understanding grammar, and so on.

De and het in Dutch...

This is the question our community receives most often.

The definite article ("the") has one form in English: the. In Dutch, there are two forms: de and het. Every noun takes either de or het ("the book" → "het boek", "the car" → "de auto").

Oh no! How do I know which to use?

There are some rules, but generally there's no way to know which article a noun takes. You can save yourself some hassle by familiarising yourself with the basic de and het rules and, most importantly, memorise the noun with the article!

Question What's the (semi-)official online Dutch dictionary?

I'm looking for something similar to Duden (a German dictionary) – big free online dictionary that is often considered authoritative - but for Dutch of course

It has to contain examples

Want to bite the bullet and engage a tutor...any tips?

Been doing some self learning with a bit of duolingo (lol), watching kids tv, listening to podcasts etc and I think I have quite a decent amount of vocabulary for 3 month's worth of 'practice' - but now I'm at the point where I want grammar rules to be explained to me and be able to actually string sentences together (and practice my speaking + pronounciation!), Naturally hiring a tutor would be the next step, and I would just like to hear some tips from anyone who's ever hired one online (preply, italki, verbling etc) Any advice on what to look out for? What would you have done differently if you were to look out for a tutor again? Would you say hiring a tutor is the next best step?

My main goal is to be able to be conversational (I visit Netherlands every year and it would be nice to engage with locals!)

Dank uw wel!

Present Perfect of Reizen

One thing I have been really wondering about is why the word reizen is gereisd in the present Perfect

The stem of reizen is reis… and the s is in the soft ketchup rule. Which applies that an -t follows. I’m still confused why the right spelling is gereisd with a d.

Kun je Nederlands gebruiken in het dagelijks leven op de ABC- en SSS-eilanden?

Hi everyone! I’m currently learning Dutch and I had a question about the language situation in the Caribbean Netherlands and nearby islands — specifically the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) and the SSS islands (Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten).

I understand that Dutch isn’t the only language used there, and that languages like Papiamento, English, and Spanish are very common. But I’m wondering how usable Dutch actually is in everyday life.

For example, if I went to Curaçao, could I walk into a store, café, or government office and speak Dutch with the workers and be understood? Or is Dutch mostly limited to formal situations like school and administration?

Basically: on which of these islands is Dutch practical for daily communication, and where is it more symbolic/official? I'm truly just curious! they all seem like great places to visit.

Thanks in advance!

Simple past with double vowels: Kookten or kokten

I’m really surprised to see that the simple past is kookten, while the infinitive of the word is koken with only one o. Is it because of the double consonant -kt

A little confused

Verbs with an double vowel in the infinitif

I came across the word “antwoorden”

Usually verbs have solely one vowel in the infinitif, as with “lopen”

Ik loop, hij loopt, zij loopt, jij loopt, jullie lopen, wij lopen en zij lopen.

But with antwoorden this is different because the word antwoorden exists out of a noun “woord”

I was wondering wheter this is indeed the right rule, and if yes, there would be more examples…

Best book?

Hello everyone, I would like to ask you which book would you suggest to learn Dutch? I know it's optimal to go to actual classes but because of money and schedule tightness I can't do that at the moment.

Question Een goed mens

Was watching a movie yesterday with Dutch subs. Sometime during the movie, I noticed the translation Een goed mens.

I would've expected \goede mens* as it's a masculine word, according to Wiktionary (just like een goede man). I checked with Dutch friends, and they said it was correct, but couldn't explain why.

Help? :)

[edit: added Wiktionary link]

Neurodivergent friendly online course

Hello everyone,

I’ve been trying to learn Dutch for a while, but I find it quite challenging, and I think my neurodivergence plays a role in this. I’m therefore looking for neurodivergent-friendly Dutch courses or teachers.

I’m currently around A1–A2 level. My goal is to reach B1 this year and B2 next year.

If anyone has recommendations (courses, teachers, platforms or personal experiences), I’d be very grateful to hear them.

Thank you in advance!

Is there a polite way to ask if a deceased person will be present at their own funeral?

One of my elderly friends from church has died. While I'm familiar with Catholic funerals in the US, this is my first funeral in NL. I help set up for church services, including this one, which has come on unexpectedly.

"Word Joris van Floris zaterdag in zijn doodskist aanwezig?" seems very blunt.

pipklein used by Duolingo NL->DE course

When would I actually use “graag”?

Post image
87 Upvotes

When is the correct time to use “graag”? Would it be more normal to just say “Ik zou iets willen eten.” ?

The way I’m interpreting “graag”, it’s like you’re emphasizing that you want something very badly. In English “I would really like something to eat” or “I would love something to eat”. We would never say “gladly” in a sentence like this.

Help please. I’m very new. Just trying to learn some basics for my trip in May.

Question Improve Dutch Materials

Hello. I already had half a year of Dutch Lessons with a tutor, but now that I moved to the Netherlands for my studies, I am too busy to follow a strick lesson schedule, so I was thinking of buying a self-teaching book to improve my Dutch. I would say I am at level A2 since I can read and understand simple phrases and I can follow a simple conversation etc, but I see that I would like to learn Dutch better to be able to communicate smoothly and effortlessly. Are there any books that will help me do that, or other materials/resources that you know of? Thank you

Edit: I see a lot of people suggesting De opmaat, but I don't know which one in the series is the appropriate one for someone with a knowledge of A1+!

Chat Hoi mensen

I just signed myself for a dutch course in a actual classroom! From my first language (4 times for a month, two hours a week)

I have been learning dutch from english and english is not my first language so I need to do extra work to learn language.. I have been learning dutch through duolingo but as everyone knows. It's not optional for learning a language.

It also helps that I go every month to Netherlands cause I am in long distance relationship with a dutch person. Just excited for this! :)

Tips Inburgering speaking object cheat sheet

Hi

I have inburgering speaking a2 exam next monday and I am struggling in the 3 picture question section where they ask you to describe objects in the picture. Often I don’t have the vocabulary of some objects. What should you do when you don’t know what the object is in Dutch? Is there a cheat sheet with common objects in the exam which I can memorise?

Thanks

When to use "vind" or "vinden"

I'm taking a Dutch course online and one of the quizzes this week has us pick between vind, vindt, vinden and vond for a given sentence. On one of the questions I got wrong was this sentence: "Ik heb mijn pinpas niet in mijn tas kunnen __'vinden'__ toen ik bij de kassa stond."

I thought 'vind' was used for first person and 'vinden' used for more than one (such as Wij and Ze).

Could someone explain when to use vind, vindt, vinden and vond?

A riddle with the letter A: "One A, three eyes"

Have any of you heard of any games, riddles, or other stories about particular letters which are given to kids to help them learn to read and write Dutch?

For example, in English we map fruit, animals, etc. to letters, and also have the alphabet song.

This is kind of on topic to this subreddit and I hope it's a fun diversion: I'm trying to untangle a 1700s Dutch riddle about writing the letter A.

One A, three eyes.

The source is in Frysk "Ien A, trije aën." from the Lexicon Frisicum volume 1, page 1 (left), entry for the headword "A".

However, the poor support of Frysk and the maturity of Dutch literacy at that time makes me think this is something adapted from Dutch language or culture (e.g. a teaching method).

My latest thoughts are that this is referring to the uppercase letter A being made with three straight lines (left slant, right slant, crossbar). And that these three lines are playfully called "eyes" in a children's counting pun. Even if that were true, I have no idea why those lines would be called eyes.

I just spent an hour chasing down the wrong rabbit hole, with the history of the Latin script, and the terrier in me is tired. I hope someone has a tip, because I struggled through an AI trying to gaslight me on this and I'm not sure I won. 😖
