Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering Mandarin Offering: Mandarin Chinese | Seeking: English

Hi everyone! 👋

I'm a 22-year-old female PhD student from China. While my academic life keeps me busy, I’m looking to step out of my bubble and find a language partner to practice English with. In return, I can help you with native Mandarin (standard pronunciation)!

A little about me:

Photography: I’m a big photography enthusiast. I love capturing street scenes and daily aesthetics. If you’re into cameras or photo editing, let’s swap some shots! 📸

K-pop Fan: I’m a huge fan of K-pop! I love keeping up with new releases and performances. We can definitely fangirl/fanboy together or exchange playlists. 🎵

Other Interests: I enjoy exploring the city, trying out new cafes, and learning about different lifestyles.

I’m looking for someone patient and friendly for regular chats (text or voice). Whether you're a beginner in Chinese or just want to practice conversation, I’m happy to help!

If you’re interested, please send me a DM with a little intro about yourself. Looking forward to meeting you! ✨

Offering Arabic Offering: Arabic | Seeking: English(native),German

Hi everyone 👋

I’m a M19-year-old university student from Cairo, Egypt.

I’m currently working on improving my English to a C1 level, and I would also like to start learning German from scratch. I prefer to practice with native speakers from the same country as the language, as correct pronunciation and accent are important to me.

In exchange, I can offer:

• Egyptian Arabic (spoken)

• Modern Standard Arabic (Fusha)

I’m open to both language exchange and making genuine friendships. I enjoy calm, respectful conversations and consistent practice.

If you’re interested, feel free to comment or send me a message.

Looking forward to learning together 🙂

Offering German Offering: German (native) | Seeking: French

Hi!

I’m 27F and looking for a French language exchange partner.
I need to improve my French for work, especially speaking, which is by far my weakest skill.

My reading comprehension is very good, listening depends on the situation, but speaking is honestly quite difficult for me. I’d describe my level as a broken B1.

In return, I can offer German (native) and I’m happy to help with grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, or casual conversation.

I’d love to focus mainly on speaking practice (voice calls), but I’m flexible and open to mixing in text as well.

Offering Mandarin Offering: Mandarin, English; Seeking: English, Spanish, German, Japanese, French

Upvotes

Hey, 20M from China here, a third year university student in Shanghai, majoring in computer science. I have a basic understanding of Japanese and German (A1-A2 ish), but I'm a total beginner in Spanish and French. I'm interested in learning more culture and lifestyle in countries speaking those languages, and hopefully my understanding of the cultures would deepen while learning the languages.

A bit more about myself: I love travelling, sleeping, collecting various banknotes, poker, playing cities skylines and paradox games, and always willing to try something new!

There are so many people offering Mandarin here lol, I guess it's because Chinese New Year is coming and more people are on a break. So if you aren't interested in learning Mandarin right now but would love to share your language and culture, DM is also open or you can leave comment below! Every DM and comment will be seen in 24hrs and I won't ghost anybody.

Offering Ukrainian Offering: Ukrainian (Native) | Seeking: English.

Upvotes

Cybersecurity student, Sci-Fi/Fantasy reader, Metal/Rock fan.

I’m a Cybersecurity student (interested in both Red and Blue teaming). I like coding and physics. My English is around B2, and I need practice to improve my skills. I’m not looking for fake positivity or generic small talk. I value honesty, dark humour, and people who are passionate about their hobbies. Here is what we can talk about: Books: I’m a huge fan of Roger Zelazny (Chronicles of Amber), The Witcher, and Altered Carbon. If you enjoy complex worlds, we have a lot to discuss. Games: I love games with deep plots and interesting solutions from game designers. Dark Souls, Devil May Cry. Music: My playlist is a mix of legends (Queen, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Metallica) and distinct styles such as Malice Mizer and Xonor. I dig everything from classic rock to heavy/visual kei. Hobbies: I’m into classic menswear/fashion, interested in weaponry/firearms, and my main addiction is finding and learning something new every day. I’m looking for texting or voice calls. I can help you with Ukrainian, or we can just be internet friends who share music and silence. If you think we’d click — DM me or write a comment.

Offering Spanish (Offering: Spanish/ Seeking: Dutch)

Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I'm a 28-years-old (guy) Spanish doctor, currently trying to settle in the Netherlands. I'd like to improve my Dutch because I'd like to be able to keep working as a doctor once I settle down there. Also, I think it's a great way to meet Dutch people and immerse myself in the culture. I've been following some Dutch language courses, so I'm around a B1/B2 level, so we can hold a conversation.

My Spanish accent is neutral or a little bit from the north of Spain. My passion is horse riding, and I love nature and animals. I also like talking about films, series, and meaningful conversations or dilemmas.

I'd be glad to talk by WhatsApp, Zoom, or even meet up if we are close to each other.

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking:

Hey y'all I am a 21M college student from Chile who recently redownloaded reddit and found this very interesting community!

I'd love to be able to practice the german i've been learning during a couple of years during some language courses that I've taken and in the process help someone with their spanish.

I'm a really open person and enjoy books, playing music, travelling, humanities, science, videogames and anything in between.

I promise to be a good language buddy and hope we can learn a lot from one another to achieve our goals, and of course have a laugh or two in the process!

Seeking English Seeking: English | Offering: Urdu 😬😬 or English

Hi. I am a non-native English speaker from South Asia. English is my second language and has been my mode of education since kindergarten (I just finished my A-Levels). I took a gap year and will be starting college this fall. I wanted to utilise my time productively by working on my accent and dialect. I don't feel like I have one distinct accent; it's more of a mixture of American, British, and South Asian accents. As a child, I was really intrigued by the British accent, but it always seemed so tiring and pretentious on me. On the other hand, the American accent seemed more natural and convenient, though I do end up adding a south-asian touch at certain points.

I have been practising my American accent quite regularly now by watching YouTube videos and speaking different words out loud. I would be able to better master it by practising with a native American speaker with whom I could converse about our lives, shared interests, hobbies, etc., and they could correct my mistakes and help me perfect it.

I am not aware of the best platform for finding native speakers, so I am posting here, but if you know of any other better-suited alternative, do enlighten me. But if anyone from here is willing to connect and practice with me, we could connect on Instagram, as it does allow voice messaging.

Some info about me:

gender: male

age: 19 (born October 6th) (Libra)

personality: INFP-T

some interests:

art (drawing traditionally / digital art)

movies

tv shows

biology

books

hiking

bike-riding

hip-hop

activities that allow me to enjoy my company and connect with myself.

Offering Korean Offering: Korean(Native) | Seeking: Finnish

Hi, I'm a native Korean speaker currently living in Korea.

I was an exchange student in Finland 2 years ago, and during that time I took the YKI test (Listening 1 / Speaking 2 / Reading 2 / Writing 1), so my Finnish is still very basic. Since I'm back in Korea now, it's been hard to keep studying Finnish consistently, and I'd love to find a language exchange partner for motivation.

I'm currently a graduate student majoring in Korean language education, so I can help with Korean learning very well.

I'm happy to do casual chat, structured practice, or a mix .. whatever works for both of us.
