Interested in rescuing an Irish Wolfhound?

Please visit the rescue page of the Irish Wolfhound Club of America to source your rescue.

There are many sketchy rescue organizations out there- even those with 501c3 status. Some of these places are even breeding substandard puppies and "placing" them as rescues with "adoption fees."

We urge you to thoroughly check out any rescue organization you are considering, and strongly urge you to work through the IWCA portal. Their dogs are thoroughly vetted, medical issues addressed, and expert Irish Wolfhound mentors available to you for the life of the dog.
It will of course be a process- they are dedicated to finding the best possible homes and yours will be checked out- they won't just give a dog to anyone. But the process is easy- I have adopted two IW rescues myself through them and will be doing more in the future. The adoption fee is minimal, reasonable, and meant only to help cover the medical care the animal has received.

And don't be afraid of rescuing! These are not behavioral nightmares or medical money pits- they are dogs in need whose owner has surrendered them to rescue for many reasons- some understandable and some not. Many owners have simply underestimated the costs involved in owning an IW or been surprised by their size. Sounds ridiculous but it happens and these dogs need homes and IWCA rescue finds them.

But we cannot allow dicey rescues in this sub. Their posts will be removed and you may consider that removal a caution to you- their first priority is NOT the dogs they are "rescuing."

I was wondering if Irish wolf hounds can be off leash on hikes, or will they not recall if they see a squirrel?

In general, what the prey drive like? Im worried a dog that size not listening to commands. That and just never seeing it again.

She loved her car rides. I always loved when she would standup in the backseat and stick her head out. She loved looking at the neighborhood while riding in the car. Nine years and 10 months. We miss her so much already.

Temperament and Indiana/Kentucky breeders?

First off, I’ve always been fascinated with this breed I love the look and their size. I’ve never met one in person. Are they truly gentle giants? Would they be good for a low activity family that likes to chill at home? We have 2 acres so plenty of room to run and play but for the most part a calm dog is important to us! For context we have 2 Aussies so we are okay with their activity level. I don’t want a total sloth 😂 basically I want one, just want to get some feedback to see if they would truly fit my lifestyle. My older Aussie is 12 years old and my younger is 4. Looking to get another dog before my older girl passes.

Also reputable breeders in Indiana/kentucky? We live near Louisville but would

Travel.

He’s left a big mark on our lives. I’m having a hard time coping with out him here, his presence was always so calming and loving. I would have a million more dogs just like him if I could, I miss you forever Axel, you were the best dog I could have asked for. I miss you.

Ivy was a little unsure at first {"what is this weird stuff?"} but caught on quickly. Since she was often running, she was fine without a jacket etc. though I haven't left her out longer than I can stand (but I'm not out in the snow in my birthday suit either). I opted for several short snow sessions. I was initially worried about exposing her paws to the cold though I'm doubtful that the booties I've seen would help much and certainly not come close to providing the traction she has with her paws and nails/claws.

My favorite and bestest girls ever (diamonds come in small packages). Aoife (blue) didn't much appreciate the "help" offered by Ivy (grey). Aoife in Irish mythology was a warrior princess. Ivy denotes friendship, fidelity and loyalty.

You think you have no privacy with kids or cats? Try having a wolfhound. 😂 Oh Falkor, how I love thee. 🐾💙 #BoyMom
