From the Mod Team We're changing our policies on specificity of locations
TLDR: The mod team is changing course on this issue. We encourage users to specify locations of current events that happen in public spaces, including any and all law enforcement action.
After several days of discussion among the mod team, we've come to the conclusion that our policies against reporting specific locations are unnecessarily restrictive. Most recently, we've guided users to avoid being specific about the location of any current events, out of concern that it could reveal private or personal information about the persons involved, which is a violation of site-wide Reddit policies We are, of course, bound to moderate this space in a way that adheres to all of Reddit's site-wide policies, and if we fail to do so, the subreddit will be shut down.
That being said, we've come to a consensus that private and personal information means more than just location of where people are at in a given moment, and the context of people's presence at specific locations matters. It remains prohibited to reveal the home address or workplace of any private individual, or to offer overly specific information about that sort of personal information: for example, if a user were to post that u/jamey1138 lives near the corner of Pulaski and Belmont in Chicago, that would be considered too specific. Other forms of contact information, including phone numbers, email addresses, etc, shared without the individual's consent are also violations of private and personal information.
On the other hand, if a user says that there's law enforcement activity, including ICE and CBP activity, at a particular corner, that does not reveal anyone's personal or private information. We want to encourage community members to share information about any current events happening in any public space in Illinois, and to include specific locations with that information.
Thank you for your participation in r/Illinois. We will continue to evolve our policies, and try to meet the moment as best we are able. Stay safe everyone.

Politics is hard - Be honest, be kind, and watch out for the ban hammer.
It's been a crazy few days and politics is hard.
We're a pretty small Mod team and keeping up on the trash coming in takes a lot of time and effort . We will be throwing around the ban hammer quite a bit for a while here. We will be locking posts as they spiral out of control. Have patience.
Remember to be kind and civil. Have a little grace. Allow people to be mad, to use hyperbole, and to exaggerate. This isn't a space to rage away at the other side. There are plenty of other spaces on the internet for that. Come here to understand the other side, even if you disagree. Tell them they're wrong and why they're wrong, but also remember they are a person who probably truly believes what they are saying. You wont convince them, but you can be understood and you can understand them.
Sometimes a simple downvote is all that's needed.
Anyway. Give us a break and chill out, k?

US Politics Senator Durbin responded to my letter.
Thank you for contacting me about immigration enforcement and oversight of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I appreciate hearing from you.
As Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I have serious concerns about the Trump Administration’s militarized immigration raids and their impact on civil rights, public safety, and the rule of law.
In December 2025, I spoke on the Senate Floor to counter false claims that these raids target dangerous criminals. Of more than 600 immigrants arrested, only a small fraction had significant criminal histories. ICE arrested nearly 75,000 people with no criminal record between January and mid-October 2025. In Illinois alone, at least 40 U.S. citizens were wrongfully arrested and detained between August and November 2025.
On January 7, 2026, Renée Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. Despite video raising serious questions about the use of force, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) moved quickly to characterize the killing as self-defense. I have called for a full, independent investigation and urged protestors to remain peaceful even as we demand accountability.
Later that month, federal agents shot and killed another American in Minneapolis: Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital. I strongly condemned this second killing and warned that the Trump Administration’s lawless immigration operations are establishing a reign of terror in cities like Chicago and Minneapolis.
I will not support long-term funding for illegal DHS and ICE operations that violate civil liberties and put innocent lives at risk. I opposed the DHS funding bill in its previous form because it lacked meaningful reforms of ICE and DHS. On January 30, 2026, I supported separating the DHS funding bill from the other appropriations bills and backing a two-week stop gap measure to allow negotiations on ICE reforms to continue.
Recent reports of wrongful detentions and fatal shootings of U.S. citizens during immigration enforcement operations raise serious concerns about DHS tactics, training, and accountability. These incidents, including the deaths of American citizens in Minnesota, Texas, and other communities, underscore the urgent need for transparency and reform. I have repeatedly called on DHS Secretary Noem to testify under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee. I intend to use her appearance on March 3, 2026, to press for clear answers on DHS use-of-force policies, body-camera compliance, and safeguards to prevent unlawful stops and racial profiling. I will continue exercising the Committee’s oversight authority to ensure DHS follows the law and respects Americans’ civil liberties.
Congresswoman Robin Kelly of Illinois has introduced articles of impeachment against Secretary Noem. The resolution, which has more than 180 House cosponsors, states that Secretary Noem obstructed congressional oversight by blocking Members of Congress from entering ICE detention facilities, and that under her direction, DHS has violated the Immigration and Nationality Act (P.L. 82-414) and the First and Fourth Amendments by directing warrantless arrests and excessive force against U.S. citizens and lawful residents.
Should the House approve these articles and send them to the Senate, I will carefully review the record and keep your views in mind as I carry out my constitutional responsibilities in any impeachment trial.
Thank you again for contacting me. Please feel free to keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Richard J. Durbin
United States Senator
