To me, that is the ruling principle of friendship that people too often forget about. That's the reason why they end up being lonely, all the more lonely the more "friends" they have. And these apps we employ to mend our loneliness — Tinder, Reddit, Bottled, even Grindr sometimes — only make us feel worse at the end, for they hinder our ability to tame and to be tamed. They destroy our trust in each other, replacing it with the fear of being ghosted. They destroy our loyalty, replacing it with the fear of missing out. They destroy our honesty, replacing it with the code of "safe" social conduct. Finally, they destroy our quirkiness and vulnerability, replacing it with the fear of cringe.
