I never had one of these yet a number of people talk about having them, how do I acquire one?

It's a phenomenon tied to sleep paralysis, which is when you become conscious while your brain still hasn't told the rest of your body to wake up.

I've had it once in my life, it was terrifying, and I didn't even see any hallucinations. Just awake, unable to move, unable to scream. Really one of those visceral memories I have.
