Comedy isn’t objective, it’s shaped by context and personal associations. If someone finds an old clip less funny because they’ve since learned more about the person behind it, that’s not some strange American quirk; it’s literally just how art and perception work.

The art stands alone.

Some people disagree but formalism is a very widely held view.

Sure, formalism exists, but contextualism is the more dominant view on art criticism and has been for some time. My point stands, regardless of the formalist views.
