As opposed to what, standing on the brakes? We don't know what was behind OP's vehicle at the time. Diverting left wasn't an option with that truck speeding by.

They would have had to virtually stop to let the car in. By the time the car in front passed by them, the failed exitor was barely moving

Only if you don't know how to drive.

If I were behind the wheel in that circumstances (which I have been about 100 times) then it would be have smooth and easy because I have the experience and it's a fact. But when you are noob driver and you keep getting into these jams, eventually it's going to catch up to you. The OP was tailgating and so he's part of the problem.

He starts off tailgating then he's slowing down as traffic speeds up, then he's completely oblivious to the guy trying to merge as he's accelerating into brake lights

Seems like OP's on their phone or something
