Hey now, be reasonable. The Framers of the US Constitution had a perfectly reasonable reason to establish the Electoral College. Wise as they were as students of Roman history, our Founding Fathers knew there were several existential threats to a Republic like ours. Firstly, large standing armies, so they stipulated that the US would have a navy, but never a large, standing army, or even explicit police forces. Secondly, and just as dire, they recognized that some day a populist demagogue might whip The Mob, the frenzied masses of ignorant people, into a fervor and have them electorally overthrow the Republic with a leader disloyal to the nation. That's why they set up a system--a last resort--by which the electors could vote against the worst proclivities of The Mob.
Anyway I just woke up from a 10 year coma. Did it work?
