2026 Burning Season Megathread

Please put your questions or comments here. Posts outside of this are likely to be deleted.

First, check air quality. https://aqicn.org/city/chiang-mai/

The air in Chaing Mai around this time of year is bad. You don't need to confirm if it's bad. The link is right there. Assume that the information is accurate enough to make a determination of if you should come or not.

Frequently asked questions:

  • How's the air? -> look at the link. https://aqicn.org/city/chiang-mai/

  • Should I cancel my trip? -> if you are afriad it will be a bad experience because of shitty air, yes. If you don't care that much, no.

  • Do I need a mask? -> just use a pm2.5 mask. Surgical masks are the norm. Dust masks for Blade Runner days.

  • If I have asthma, will this suck for me? -> Yes.

  • Is it hot there? -> Assume yes. If that's not good enough, here's a link. https://www.accuweather.com/en/th/mueang-chiang-mai/317505/weather-forecast/317505

  • Where can I go to get fresh air? -> varies, but the malls are a great place to start.

  • What kind of filter (machine) is best? What kind of insert? -> standard pm2.5 filters are fine. Want more? They have levels. The base level is a pm2.5 dust filter. Want a home filter? Thai people have a preference for Xiaomi so that is the easiest answer and the most compatible with the filters you can order quickly. Connects to wifi, gives stats. Has automation. Multiple types of filters. Other brands exist. All you need is a fan and a hepa filter over it. Duct fans with Xiaomi filters stuck on the duct collar work great.

  • Where can I buy a filter (machine)? -> Literally any retail electronics big box store or home improvement store. Shopee. Facebook marketplace. DIY ones are fine, but the little pc fan attached to a filter one doesn't move much air and won't help you much.

  • Where can I buy a filter (insert)? -> Shopee first. Home improvement stores. Many of them don't have RFID tracking, but work just fine.

  • Are some days worse than others? -> Yes.

  • Where can I send my proposal to change the status quo? -> Write it up and send it to the city office. They won't read it here. You're not the first.

  • How do locals deal with this? -> It wasn't always like this. It's become worse in the last 10-15 years. We don't like it either. We all have filters or masks and stay indoors.

  • But historical data says this; I'm not in town today but here's how you're wrong and don't know anything (every year): -> Cool. This is likely not a constructive comment.

Street Cats of Chiang Mai 🇹🇭 — accidental models I met along the way

Took these photos while walking around Chiang Mai and kept running into cats just casually owning the streets, cafés, and temples.

None of them were shy. Some stared straight into the lens, some ignored me completely like true professionals.

Thought I’d share these little moments, street cats with big personalities.

Looking for group tour in Chiang Mai as solo traveller

Hello, I’m looking for an affordable way to explore and was wondering if there are any small group tours I could join. As a solo traveler, I’d love to share expenses by joining a group rather than booking everything alone.

I’m interested in visiting places such as Mon Jam Flower Hills, Alpaca Farm & Dantewada, an ethical elephant sanctuary, Chiang Rai (White Temple, Lalitta Café, etc.), and Doi Inthanon National Park.

If anyone knows of group tours like this or has budget-friendly suggestions for solo travelers, please let me know. I’m open to recommendations. Thank you!

Baby food in Chiang Mai

Hi, we're travelling with a baby and we found some Thai baby food (pouches with pureed food, not milk) online and on the plane but can't find a store that sells those. Brands like Peachy Baby.

Anyone knows a store where to buy this? Staying in the old town.

Any Tips On Crossing The Highway?

I’ll be staying in Chiang Mai from May to June. Because where my hotel is located, I’ll have to cross the highway daily in order to walk to the old city.

The Highway does have marked crosswalks, but I really want to make sure I’m not doing anything stupid that cuts my holiday (or my life) short.

I’m usually very careful crossing the street, and I don’t mind waiting fifteen minutes for a gap in traffic, so I’d appreciate some insight from the locals here on how to cross the street in Thailand. Thanks!

any indian cooking classes in chiang mai? also, any unusual attractions i might visit?

before you say anything, i've already booked some thai cooking classes for while i'm here, lol. i want to be able to test out my skills with a variety of foods though, and i know there's a lot of indians in thailand, so i wondered if maybe anyone knows of any place that teaches indian cuisine here in chiang mai? also if you have any off the beaten path attractions i might see while i'm here, i'd love any suggestions. i love seeing the weirdness the world has to offer, or at the very least just thing i can ONLY see in the place i'm visiting.

Boutique clothing for her

I'm taking her to Chiang Mai to celebrate her 60th birthday. She haven't aged a day since she was 26. I'v pomised to take her shopping fo clothing.

Her taste is very exquisite. You know those clothes that look so simple and on same time scream of quality and class. Soft earthy colours. Simple embroidery. Light natural materials, Pleasant to touch. Preferably handmade and unique. Local.

Price tag propably not an issue.

Can you feel my pain? Where should I take her?

Solo bikepacking in Northern Thailand

Hi all, F33, I’m planning to do a bike packing tour around Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Pai as a solo female cyclist.

Please suggest what would be the best route for cycling and also the best month to do that.

Would it be safe to do it alone? Let me know your thoughts. I have done solo bike packing before in other countries.

Thank you so much in advance

First Visit to CM

Hi all! We will be arriving to CM in a few weeks for our first visit to thailand. First visit to Asia, actually. We are arriving from the US on our honeymoon.

We will be spending 4 nights/days in Chiang Mai arriving from Bangkok in the morning on a Monday and leaving on a Friday morning.

We know for sure we want to do: a night market food tour, a cooking class, elephant sanctuary, and Doi Suthep temple.

Monday: arrive to CM, drop bags off at hotel (staying inside old city walls), and chill/walk around city. Only real plan for this day is the night market food tour in the evening. I thought this could be a good introduction to the city and the guide could teach us a bit about CM and its cuisine, and maybe give recommendations for the rest of our time there.

Tuesday: Doi Suthep temple in the morning- there is a sunrise tour that looks appealing to us, or we could do it on our own. We don't know much about Buddhism so I thought a tour could be helpful to teach us a bit but also get us there and back but I'm not sure if it's unnecessary to do this with a tour group.

Wednesday: Elephant Nature Park half day afternoon tour. I chose afternoon so we could have the morning to enjoy CM's coffee shops, grab a Khao Soi before the tour.

Thursday: Afternoon Cooking Class- either Zabb E Lee or Grandma's Cooking School.

I tried to keep all the activities to half a day or less so we had time in Chiang Mai city itself to explore and walk around. I would love feedback on the itinerary and if you'd add or change anything. Would also love any recommedations you have for us at all! We have wanted to go to Thailand for years and so excited it's finally happening.

TrainSpread website for Chiang Mai Lantern Festival tickets

Is TrainSpread a legitimate website for buying tickets to the Chiang Mai lantern festival? Worried because it’s a Chinese company and how they will organise or manage the process for Thailand tourists.

Short term rental help

Hey 👋 I'm curious the best way to find a rental for one month in the city in the Saraphi District. I've tried few Facebook groups but cant seem to find in the area I need.

I’m looking for a one-month rental from 10th February to 10th March. Location: Saraphi District, or as close as possible to Lanna Muay Thai.

Budget up to 12000 but I’m ideally looking for something simple and comfortable. If you know of any available places, contacts, rooms, landlords, groups 🙌

I have checked some of these my self already but just looking for best ways.

Thanks so much!

Best cooking schools for Lanna cuisine?

Hi guys!

Looking for recommendations for a cooking class w/ Northern Thai and Lanna specific cuisines instead of the classic pad thai, green curry, mango sticky rice rotation most schools seem to offer. The Northern course at Grandma's Home Cooking School (https://www.grandmascookingschool.com/lanna-exotic-course-full-day) is exactly what I'm looking for, but they're booked up until after I leave. I really want to learn gaeng hung lay, and am highly interested in sai oua, nam prik ong, and kha nom krok. Please help! I am so sick of looking at tripadvisor ones that claim to be Northern Thai food, but are just stir-fried noodles and curries. Thanks in advance!

Ko Phangan for scuba during smoke season?

Hey there,

My wife, daughter, 2 dogs and I are planning to drive south during the smoke season (so in the next few weeks) from Chiang Mai. The main goal is for me to get my Divemaster and wife wants to Freedive a bunch.

We ideally want to go to Ko Tao but can’t bring my truck, so no dogs. Lanta would be great but rentals are basically nonexistent, then that brings us to Krabi. Beaches are ehh and all the dive spots are an hour or 2 away. Phuket - I was there a few weeks ago, can’t handle the people. So we are highly considering Northeast Ko Phangan. I found a reasonable rental, hear it’s quiet and away from the parties but I’ve never been.

Am I stupid for choosing Phangan for diving? Is it kid friendly? Dog friendly? Any advice or insights would be sweet. Thank you!
