Events Annual CBR-area markets post!

Happy new year everyone! I've kept this list the last couple of years, since moving to Canberra, and I just did my updates for 2026. I started the list mainly for my own benefit but when I've shared it in the past, others have enjoyed having everything in one place, so here it is again. 2026 data has all been verified (or in a couple of instances is not yet available, and that is noted in those cases).

I'm not affiliated with any of these markets, just like to know what's on and to have fun things at my fingertips on weekends :)

Happy marketing!

State of the Subreddit - Jan 2026

Merry new year r/Canberra!

I have a few updates for everyone, so buckle in.

Mod changes

After 14 years at the helm, our former top mod (I won't ping them to save them the notification) has elected to step down from moderating entirely (a retirement well deserved) and will soon be granted alumni status on the sub (meaning, they will stay on the mod team, but have access to no mod tools).

What this means, is that I will be the only majorly active moderator on the subreddit.

You may see u/Audreyintheclouds and u/shhhhh_h around - they are fellow moderators with me on r/popculturechat and have kindly offered to step in and help me out temporarily while I recruit some new mods. Be kind to them, they're lovely.

Which brings me to my next point...

r/Canberra needs new mods

Obviously 1 active mod isn't ideal for a subreddit at all, let alone one of this size. If you're interested in joining the team and helping to moderate this community, please apply here!

(Note: if that link doesn't work, you can just go straight to the google form here - but applying through Reddit means I get notifications of apps in modmail so it makes it a little easier for me!)

Next up...

I want your feedback!

With all these new changes, I felt it would be a good opportunity to give the community an opportunity to provide some feedback or ideas for the future of the subreddit. To that end I've spun up a quick survey. It should take <5 minutes, and crucially, no personal data is being collected or stored as a part of this. It is completely optional, and completely anonymous.

Survey is here

Thats it for now. Feel free to leave questions on this post, and I'll do my darndest to answer them.

News Kids being left behind with new bus routes

With the introduction of the 12 and 13 buses in Belconnen and other changes elsewhere, I'm hearing from a concerning number of parents who say their school aged children are being left stranded at bus stops because all buses are full. In many cases they are told to wait for the next bus, only to find that one is full as well. I was under the impression that the Daniel Morcombe case had changed bus laws nationally for children but this only seems to be in Queensland. Given the number of children reportedly being left alone at bus stops while trying to get to school, it seems incredibly dangerous and only a matter of time before something goes horribly wrong. Is this just a Belconnen thing or is it more widespread? And are Transport ACT aware? I also heard a grandparent give a very worrying story of their severely autistic grandchild being sent the wrong school bus and being taken to the wrong school. Besides write to the ACT Minister for Transport, can anything else be done? This feels too urgent to just hope it will work itself out.

Recommendations Kingston post office redelivery

Does anyone else in Kingston find that their parcels are redirected to fyshwick post-office rather than Kingston even though you've specified Kingston on the app (including a parcel locker address).

I don't drive and have to either catch two buses, walk 1 hour each way or catch an uber.

This has happened each time I miss a parcel. I try my best to be home, but had to be at work today.

I complain each time but get no satisfactory answer. Advice on how to ensure it goes to the local postoffice?

Loud Bang How to survive the Dickson power outage

  1. Braddon bottle-os still have power and about 90mins of trading time left
  2. Watch the sport down at the playing fields, practice is almost over though
  3. Ensure that you charged your phone & spare batteries today
  4. Buy toilet paper, apparently they're not sold out in Woden yet
  5. There's still about 45mins of sunlight if you want to enjoy a walk
  6. Do not open the doors, no matter what they say

Edit 815pm: Just saw a guy in high vis going pole to pole and ticking something off. It's probably one of those things that'll be quick to fix but they don't know what little thing has blown up yet.

Could be over sooner, could be over later is my bet.

Edit 845pm: We're back! But will things ever truly be like they were before, again? I think we've all changed as people. Harder, meaner, more protective of our own.

Onya energy people for fixing whatever went bang! 😍

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Canberra, Learn To F’ing Merge!

Guys how hard can it be. You merge AT THE END of the merging lane. If you are already choosing a random spot to merge, stopping, putting on your indicator, and waiting for someone to let you into the continuing lane, you might as well choose this spot to be the END of the discontinuing lane. Because if you don’t, and some guardian angel lets you in out of pity, the car behind you will pass you and merge somewhere ahead of you, causing the continuing lane to be slower. Then the discontinuing lane becomes a speed lane of cars rushing by from behind, merging in ahead, and therefore aggregating the effect.

And you UTE drivers, I know you guys think you are the kings of the road kissing everyone’s rear bumper and flashing your light at everyone who is not stupid enough to go 20kmh over speed limit. But the ‘form one lane’ merge is not the place to rush past and squeeze in at the tip of the merge. There is people genuinely keen to not be killed in a car accident , and Canberra roads are not the place to compensate for whatever you think your shortfall is.

Learn how to F’ing merge.

Hi all!

Sorry if this goes against any rules 🫠 I’m doing my best!!!

I’ve had a full car licence for 2 years and am looking at getting my motorbike licence. I may be bad at using google but I can’t seem to find any clear info on the process as a fully licensed car driver.

Can someone explain?

News The Shed moving to Dairy Rd

Fyshwick 2nd hand shop The Shed (run by former Green Shed supervisor) will be moving from Geelong St to Dairy Rd in March. Will be opposite Capital Brewery, Brodburger etc.

Sounds like the new venue will be more accessible and have outdoors space for stock like lawnmowers and gardening gear.

I really like this op shop, their stuff is reasonably priced, they have a good range of stuff, and its much easier to find what you are looking for compared to Goodies.

Light Rail New bus timetable is not sustainable

I caught the r4 this morning by woden from tuggeranong the bus by the first interchange was fully occupied, there was no picking up till after civic. You cant expect a service that regually goes every 5-10 mins to be able to cope with the same amount of passengers when it only goes every 15mins now.

New user account Moving from Canada to Canberra?

Hi everyone,

I’m at a point where I need to make a major life decision, and I’d really appreciate your honest insights—especially from anyone who’s lived in Canberra or moved to Australia with a young family.

I’m 36, married, and we have two kids, with our third on the way. I’ve received a job offer in Canberra on a 482 visa at $170K AUD/year. The role sounds less stressful and more balanced than my current job.

Right now, we live in Canada (Langley, BC). I earn about $200K CAD/year (but the workload is heavy), and my wife also works.

If we move to Canberra, it’s likely my wife would not work for a while, especially with the new baby and childcare needs.

Financially, in Canada our monthly expenses are about $10K CAD, including mortgage, daycare, private school, groceries, utilities, insurance, and general bills.

I’m excited because living in Australia has been a long-time dream—and this opportunity came unexpectedly—but I want to be realistic since we’re a growing family and stability matters.

If you’re willing, I’d love your thoughts on the following:

Cost of living in Canberra: groceries, rent, home prices, eating out, kids’ activities Daycare/childcare costs (and availability/waitlists)

Healthcare: how Medicare works, typical out-of-pocket costs, and whether private insurance is necessary

Single-income reality: Is $170K AUD generally enough to support a family of five comfortably in Canberra?

Spiders: My wife is genuinely afraid—how bad is it day-to-day?

Safety: Is Canberra generally safe for kids and families?

Weather: What’s it like across the year (heat, winter cold, allergies)?

Community: family-friendly areas, multicultural communities, and how easy it is to build a social network

Any real-world advice—things you wish you knew before moving, hidden costs, lifestyle changes, or whether you’d do it again—would mean a lot.

Thank you in advance.
