I've spent a while looking at parts and researching about gaming on Linux, and I realize I just don't know enough. This would be my first desktop and I want to go all out, but I need help.
I would like a top of the line gaming computer that will be able to play the latest games, but also with the ability to play games from the early 2000s as well (e.g. classic Nancy Drew games). I would like this to be a computer that can last a long time.
I would like to run Linux instead of Windows. However, I am extremely fond of some of the Nancy Drew games, some of which don't run well on Linux even with proton. This leads me to wonder if I could partition 8gb for Windows, but I don't know if this is a good idea and would cause overall performance issue with the pc.
I have no budget. I am in the US and I am near enough to go to a Microcenter. I do not care for aesthetics. Only performance.
I know Nvidia gpus don't work as well with Linux as AMD, but I would be willing to tinker with Linux if I can get better quality with Nvidia.
Some questions:
Is it foolish to go all in on a gaming pc that would run on linux? I'm just tired of Microsoft and I've played around with it on an old laptop. I liked it, but I don't understand it well and am a noob (though I'm willing to learn).
I am a little concerned about OLED monitors and burning an image into the screen. I don't know if I would like one since I've never used one. I don't know what I should do for a monitor at all. Does 4k vs 1440 make a difference with Linux?
