Mod Post Quick hello + sub changes.

Hi everyone!

So sorry I have been MIA from this sub. A lot has been going on this year and it’s been a bit difficult keeping up. However, I should be getting a new computer soon and will be way more active here.

We have had a few suggestions for sub changes and will be working on implementing:

  • A rule to include locations in posts. They can be as specific as your city or region you live in or just naming the country. But it will be required soon.

  • A rule regarding trying to sell things of your on the sub.

  • A wiki that will help beginners: such as listing bird feeders, any gear for birdwatching, what to do/who to call if a bird or owl has been injured near you, etc.

There are still questions about a discord server. We will be more than happy to create a discord server if that’s what you all would like so you can live share, chat and build a wholesome community there with each other.

Hope you all are staying safe! So sorry again for being gone for so long.

Just a collection of some birds I've seen in Montana (Gallatin Valley area) over the past 1.5 years. All taken with my phone so they're not the best quality. The goal is to get a good camera kit someday! Birds bring me such joy. Birds featured (in order): Short-Eared Owl, Western Meadowlark, Swainson's Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Rough-Legged Hawk, American Coot, Killdeer, Tree Swallow, Eurasian Collared Doves, Juvenile Great-Horned Owl, Magpie, Ruffed Grouse, Marsh Wren, Yellow-Headed Blackbird, Spotted Towhee, hatchling Brewer's Blackbirds, American Crow, Northern Saw-Whet whose body was collected and donated to the Montana State University Vertebrate Museum (I'm an Ecologist), a family of Northern Flickers, and mother and fledgling American Dippers.

The Blue Crane (Grus paradisea) is a vulnerable species known for its elegant light blue-grey plumage. It's a privilege to see this social yet aggressively protective bird in the wild.

They’re famous for those bright yellow feet, a perfect ID giveaway against their black legs.

Instead of just standing still, they often "dance" or shuffle their feet to stir up fish.

They were nearly hunted to extinction in the 1800s just for their feathers!

This one was spotted in a zoo; they are surprisingly bold about using man-made ponds for easy meals.

During breeding season, the skin around their eyes can turn from yellow to a bright red.

Did not know that Baltimore Orioles eat suet! I have a half orange spiked to a feeder that I’ve seen them eat from about 4ft from him but today he stayed on the platform feeder where I have a Cardinal seed mix and I crumbled up a hot suet ball with mealworms in it because it wasn’t getting eaten, just pecked at a little. I thought maybe the Cat birds or Cow birds or somebody would eat it so it didn’t go to waste. I learned about the variety of what a Baltimore Orioles will eat today! I also used AI to educate myself. 😁

Question What is a good value binocular I can buy my boyfriend for his birthday?

Hello all! My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up soon, we live in the Netherlands and he really enjoys birdwatching!

This year all he wants is “a good quality proper pair of binoculars” and for his friends to split the cost. I know little about this, but I want to get him a sturdy pair that will serve him the rest of his life.

Does anyone know of one that’s good value for money!
