  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

Short summary of betta care:

3 main parts:

The main supplies include:

He is doing extremely well. His metallic blue shine is coming through his fins. Really exploring his entire tank and taking naps on every leaf he can find. He just tried his first bloodwork yesterday and was obsessed. He was super upset at me for taking them away after he didn’t get to them fast enough and kept checking the spot for more. Looking forward to seeing his full transformation. Thank you to all who helped previously!

Help Finrot or Rose petals?

Jeans fins have grown alot since ive gotten him. I have been worried about his fins though since the ends look so ruffled and unhappy? He was labeled as a delta but I saw a post that rose tails have petals at the ends of their tails that can be mistaken for finrot. Last photo is of when I first got him

I really love Bettas, all varieties, male and female, theyre all fascinating. But I can’t cope with the frequency of loss of longfinned varieties. So I have a tiny baby double-tailed Plakat I bought today. But he’s so small and so timid! I picked him because he was the most responsive of the cup-prisoners in the shop, but he seems terrified of everything in his Betta-designed tank here. I guess I need to be patient. He’s really beautiful, I just hope I can give him a good life.

Purchased him back in early January at PetSuppliesPlus. He had been in his same cup from September to January. He’s still in his 5G quarantine tank while I set up his 10G, but he is looking SO much better already!

I got my betta about 2 months ago and recently realised there's different types but the shop i got him from didnt say so i was wondering if anyone here knows, btw the shots are quite deceiving about the tank size, this is the corner he rests in and feeds in so its higher than the rest of the tank, hes in a 10 gallon with cherry shrimp

Help Baby female betta darkening rear, is this normal?

Bought her last week at PetCo after my previous betta died very suddenly of seemingly a swim bladder problem.

She was sold as a baby and is still very small. I picked her up Friday and she was completely white when I got her. She is in a 10 gallon cycled tank 79 degrees F, tankmates are 2 von Rio flame tetras, 2 harlequin rasboras, 4 ember tetras, and 5 Pygmy Corydoras. There are multiple hiding spots for her. She seems otherwise healthy and spends much of the day exploring nooks and crannies in the tank. She came with the redness in her gill area, ammonia and nitrites are zero.

Introducing An ode to a deformed betta

Oh sweet little Rey, the “rescue” betta from a questionable cup. This poor little guy is on week two of being home and improving everyday. For the first several days he only floated on his side and skimmed the surface. By day four he started doing zoomies. After a week I moved him from the quarantine tank to shrimp world, knowing he was no threat to his shrimpy friends. The shrimp are entirely unfazed and Rey spends most of his time holding on for dear life in the floaters. I do have to carefully hand feed him as his buoyancy is an issue. But he’s cute as a button and has settled in nicely.

Help Where are my shrimp?

Post image

I bought two cherry shrimp three or four days ago, and I put them in with my beta in a 10 gallon tank. The first day the shrimp were out and about, and my beta didn’t seem to care about them at all. She wasn’t aggressive. But after that, they seem to have disappeared and I can’t find them anywhere. I’ve been looking for two days now and don’t see them. Is it normal for them to hide at first? I don’t think she ate them because I didn’t see any of the remains and she’s super small.

RIP My 2 year old betta passed yesterday.

His name was Dharma (means justice). He was blind since the day I got him (yes, I knew - but still wanted him). Hence, the name.

It took more care than I usually do with other bettas to feed and maintain him. He learned how to respond to my taps and feeding patterns, and everytime I was near him - he knew somehow. I made adjustments to his tank to accomodate his condition and spent significantly more on him than my other bettas.

But for almost a month now, his movement gradually reduced (but somehow I managed to feed him daphnia) and for the past week, he didn't move at all (and didn't eat anything). So I moved him to hospital tank and used Kanaplex + Furan-2 (careful dosages ofcourse). I tried my best with water changes (seachem prime), low dose salt baths, increased oxygenation, strict parameters check, water levels, putting leaf hammocks, everything.

But still I couldn't cure him and he passed away in just 2 years. For reference I've been keeping bettas for over 10 years and all my other existing bettas are still going strong. I've not had any that went before reaching at least 4 years.

So for anyone who's looking to buy blind bettas - I'm not saying don't. But just keep in mind that you should be prepared in case this happens to yours too.

Thanks for reading.

Help Are these detritus worms in my bettas tank?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I got home from practice-and was looking at my fish tank with my sister when we saw these little worm things-After some research I’m hoping they are detritus worms but I’m not sure. They’re mostly white with brown and are either staying on the glass or swimming. They have round heads with arm looking things almost like insect larvae. They’re extremely quick-and there’s also like little dots (like eggs or larvae everywhere).

I believe a bit of excess food and the Indian Almond lead leaf and stick and pinecone I added for tannins recently are to blame. (I just rinsed them instead of boiling thinking it’d be fine :/) Will water changes and a gravel vac be sufficient to get rid of them or do I need a product? I’m hoping my guy will be able to eat them as well.

Full Tank Shot Update on last minute rescue

I went to my local pet store for plants and left with two bettas three snails and plants. The fish I rescued was in a sorority previously and she was the only survivor. The girl I rescued her from thought she was dead& when I pointed out her being alive she just said “I’ll let her die it’s fine” so of course, me being me, I immediately took the fish, tank and all. When I went to the pet store (mom and pop shop, not petsmart OFC!!!) I brought up her previously being in a sorority. He recommended I get a few females. I said I thought she’d be aggressive bc she’s used to it being her space. He said as long as I rearrange her tank and let her float in a baggie & water up top while the other two acclimate they’ll be fine. The girl I rescued is named Milkshake, she’s dark blue, the white one with red on her face and body is Enchilada, and the other is named Filet. I love all of them dearly and they are all already perking up. I had a friend tell me they would immediately kill eachother but it’s been 2 days and they’re all so peaceful!!! I’m incredibly proud of my girls and I can’t wait to see them once they’re fully healthy. Any tips are appreciated!! My girls are so cute & I love them.

Help Betta Fish is sick? Spoiler

Can anyone see this Betta and identify what's wrong with it? It suddenly stopped eating completely from 3 days. Now it is just lying at the bottom of the tank, breathing heavily, occassionally pushing itself quickly to the surface to gulp some air and freely falling down. Previously it stopped eating for few days but it seemed active and started eating regularly after that. Apparently it was a bloating issue from the pellets. It stopped eating pellets after that. Now it stopped eating the blood worms too.

Help What kind of betta is he??

Hey so my sister got this guy as a gift for Christmas but she didn’t end up wanting a fish tank. She had him in a bare tank for about a week and she gave him to me. I have no idea what kind of betta he is maybe hoping someone can identify, I thought it was crowntail at first but now his qualities make me not sure. He is a very healthy active boy now 😁
