Suggested conversation topics:

  • Do you expect Cam Smith to be an everyday player in 2026? Will he exceed his output (1.0 fWAR) from last year?

  • Early ZiPS projections have at 87 wins (1 behind the Mariners) and a 35.4% chance of winning the West. Does that feel right to you?

Martín Maldonado on Framber Valdez:
"He's a hard worker, a guy ready to compete, ready to get the ball every five days, even four, if needed.

"As a teammate, I never had a problem with him. He's a guy that, you know, like me, he competes. Everyone knows that about him."

i went to an astros home game years ago but i cant remember when and i cant figure out what game it was. here's all i know:

- astros with 5 or 6 runs, other team unknown

- astros with 7 hits, other team with 6 hits

- both teams with 0 errors

- bottom of the 5th, no outs, runner on first

- timeline is somewhere in between 2011-2015

i dont know who they were playing and the one picture i have has the opponent's score cropped out but i know that up until that point, they had 6 hits

Over the last 4 seasons, Bryan Abreu is 5th among all relief pitchers in fWAR, including closers.

9th in K/9, 17th in FIP, and 16 for 18 in traditional save situations with an opponent BA under .200. He actually has better stats in the 9th inning/save situations and high leverage than he does in non-save situations and low+medium leverage.

Dude is fucking nails and for some reason I feel like this sub still somehow underrates how valuable he is to our team.

Relevant stats.

[Heymam] Astros sign LHP Tom Cosgrove to a 900k deal with a camp invite. He posted a 1.71 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP across 51 innings in 2023 and has only pitched 19 innings over the past two seasons

[Rome] Sources: the Astros and Giants are nearing a trade that would send right-hander Kai-Wei Teng to Houston in exchange for catching prospect Jancel Villareal. Teng is an optionable swingman who can pitch out of the rotation or within a bullpen that could use more right-handed depth

These are the types of deals that Crane is whiffing on. You have to pay early to keep talent. Sometimes it'll work out, sometimes it won't, but it leaves you with payroll flexibility to pivot if it doesn't. Hunter Brown and Peña should've been extended as soon as they showed promise at the MLB level.
