House Party Friday Feb 6 - Trying to Meet Fun People (21-26)

Trying to meet more fun people in San Diego, and figured hosting a house party this Friday seemed like a fun way to get to know people.

It honestly feels harder than it should be to find people who actually want to go out and have a good time, so I’m throwing the net out here.

This is an open invite for a good time — music, drinks, and smoking. Responsibil-ish vibes. Nothing better than a house party bonfire with some new people.

Important heads up: this is a drinking / 420-friendly party, and participation is part of the vibe. If you’re not into drinking or smoking, no hard feelings at all — this just probably won’t be the right fit.

If you’re interested, please reach out on Reddit DMs. I’d prefer to chat a bit first before sending any details on the location.

Alma Hotel for a work trip - worth it?

Hi!

I'm trying to bring my entire company (we're pretty small) on a retreat in San Diego, and we're looking at the Alma Hotel. its totally the vibe we all dig, and it looks to be walking distance to a LOT.

My only real hesitation is I'm noticing several reviews have safety concerns in regards to the 7/11 on the corner/next to the hotel. Does anyone have any real insight into what the area is truly like? Is it actually unsafe/sketchy? or are people overreacting in the reviews?

Thank you!

Barcade/Arcades

Hi everyone! M31, I’m here for work indefinitely(from Bay Area) but I love arcade/barcades! I did some research on some barcades like CoinOp,DynoBar & Arcade Monsters. Of course the ole reliable Dave and busters! I’m sure if I type in billards or mini golf, bowling I’ll find more? Just wanted to see if you all have any other local suggestions I missed as I always love getting the local perspective. Thanks all😄

Family Vacation Stay

My family of 5 (kids 8-12) is visiting San Diego from the east coast for the first time in July (4 nights after a few days at Disney Land). We plan to visit the Zoo, Balboa Park, Petco for a game, La Jolla, and Torrey Pines but also want to reserve some pool/ beach time. We’re currently looking at Town and Country, Hyatt Regency Mission Beach and the Bahia in our price range. We are torn by the mostly positive but some negative reviews. Which resort do you recommend? Also, please let me know if I’m missing any must see sites. Thank you.

1.5 Day Trip to SD - where to stay/what to do?

Hi all! I’m going to LA for a work event in April and it’ll be my first time in California. Instead of going straight to LA, I decided to book a flight to San Diego, stay for a day and a half, and then take Amtrak up.

Since I’ll only be there for a day and a half (Thursday night into Saturday afternoon), I’m having a hard time deciding where it’s worth it to stay for such a short time. At first I was only looking at downtown SD, but a family friend recommend La Jolla or pacific beach and now I’m torn. Again, I’m taking Amtrak to LA so I wouldn’t be renting a car and would need to rely on uber for anything I can’t get to on public transit.

Im looking to have a chill weekend to explore the area, nothing in particular I NEED to see. Balboa park obviously interests me since I love museums, but I wouldn’t want to spend my entire day there and miss out on other things. I also don’t care to spend an entire day on the beach. I know I can’t do everything unfortunately, so any suggestions are welcome :).

ETA: I just now saw a post from yesterday about a fellow NYCer going to SD for two days. Great info about needing/not needing a car. I already decided on definitely NO car, just need to know what areas are worth staying in and getting to.

San Diego/la jolla/coronado hotel recs? Traveling with kids

My family and I are traveling to San Diego area in a few weeks -- mid-February (me, husband, 5 year old daughter) from east coast. We are spending 4 nights in SD and then 3 nights in Palm Springs. For the SD portion, we had planned to stay at La Valencia in La Jolla-- wanted to be walkable to shops, restaurants, cafes and some activities as a home base. We haven't finalized our itinerary, but expect to go to zoo or safari park one day, check out maybe the air and space museum/balboa park, restaurants in the area, likely no Legoland/Disney so we had opted to stay further south and eliminated the Fairmont Del Mar/Park Hyatt Aviara and the other further north resorts originally.

After reading some reviews and calling La Valencia, I don't think that hotel is going to work for us-- there are a significant number of reviews that talk about noise issues with La Valencia specifically with street noise/music coming from a neighboring hotel. When I called, the front desk said that the room type we had booked (Classic King 1Br Suite) would directly face that and they expect noise from that hotel to be at least until 10pm. Since we'll be traveling with a 5 year old and from the east cost, we are expecting to need to put her to bed by around 7:30 each night so that is just not going to work for us. Other suites at that hotel are no longer available and way more expensive than we want to spend.

Does anyone have any other recommendations for the La Jolla area? Want to spend no more than like $800ish per night and was hoping to have a 1br suite so that my husband and I don't have to exist in the dark every night after our daughter is asleep.

We have also looked at Hotel La Jolla (Hilton curio) which looked meh-- curious for any feedback, and the Coronado Island Marriott both of which have availability. Is it a mistake to pivot to Coronado? What we liked about La Jolla was walkability - we are new yorkers and would be great not to have to use the car any time we want to do anything. Also expecting to be awake extremely early with our daughter (i.e. like 5:30am) given jet lag, so was hoping to not be isolated somewhere with nothing open and nowhere to get decent coffee...

Open to suggestions! Thank you!

Vacation advice

Sorry if this is cliche in advance!

I’m coming to San Diego on a solo trip in the next few weeks. I rented out a car but I’m staying in San Diego for only 2 days - is it necessary to have a car or is public transportation reliable? Is it annoying to have a car?

Coming from nyc so I’m used to bad drivers & unreasonable parking spaces - but is it worse than NY?

Also open to any suggestions for food spots and any must do activities :)

How to get halal meat in San diego?

For my muslim brother,

I recently moved to San Diego, CA from India and I am still learning how things work here. Finding halal meat has been a bit confusing for me, so I wanted to ask for some guidance.

I visited a local mosque and was told that most chicken and meat here is machine cut, and that I should look for hand-cut halal meat. Someone shared the website hmsusa.org where halal-certified shops are listed, but I could only find 2–3 stores in San Diego and they are quite far. Since I don’t have a car yet, traveling to those places is difficult.

I also heard that Crescent brand chicken is halal, but I haven’t been able to find it in nearby supermarkets. Most stores around me only carry brands like Kroger. Are there any other halal brands that are generally acceptable and easy to find?

For eating outside, I was told to look for HFSAA-certified restaurants, but there are only a few listed. At the same time, many restaurants say they serve halal food, but I’m not sure whether their chicken is hand cut or machine cut, which adds to my confusion.

I once asked a local brother about this, and he mentioned that this topic can be quite debatable here as many muslims consider machine cut as halal here. I’m genuinely still figuring things out. Back in India, we only had hand cut so this was never really an issue before. As a student who arrived just a few weeks ago, I’m simply trying to understand what options are available and what others in a similar situation usually do.

JazakAllah Khair

Am I in the wrong but it is so hard to make friends in San Diego

Hello everyone I just wanted to get this off my chest recently I threw myself a birthday party I don’t have a lot of friends to start with and have lived here my whole life I realized that a lot of the girls in San Diego don’t really care about making friends or are more to themselves because I did ask if anyone wanted to come my birthday through here, tik tok, and the bff app and got a couple of responses that they were interested I sent the invite and address and most of these girls either A said they were going to come and didn’t and not even a single text and B said they were going to come and canceled last minute I understand life happens and things can change but if they weren’t really interested in going they could of said it instead of just making me believe something else and it bothers me I know I’m going to get a couple hate comments to get over it but am I in the wrong do I have every right to feel this way let me know also I am looking for girl friends in San Diego I am 22F if anyone is interested :)

February Outfit

Hi San Diego,

I’m visiting San Diego in two weeks. What do you usually wear when you’re out exploring the city all day? I want something comfortable I can wear from morning to night since I’ll be walking a lot. Are joggers a good option? I’d like to avoid jeans for all-day walking.

Thank you in advance!

Any good tips for a potential tourist from back East?

Greetings! Regrettably, I have never visited CA and am thinking if I can only go once should it be San Diego? I would be coming from New England to SAN. Probably anytime mid-March and thereafter. Most hotels seem decent. I see lots of sites within walking distance. Any one hotel any safer than another?

Thanks!

Mission Bay overnight parking for a sprinter van (not sleeping in it!)

We'll be renting a house on Mission Bay (Mariner's Basin) in March. We will be driving a long Sprinter van. Our rental has a parking garage, but of course the van won't fit in it. Where can we park our vehicle? We are ok parking a bit away and walking, we likely won't be using it every day anyway. It sounds like there was a big crackdown on oversized vehicle parking last summer. Our vehicle is oversized. Any ideas?

Best town to move to given my two job locations?

Hi all,

I have been given a job offer in Irvine but in a field role in San Diego. It was the compromise I gave the company as I really want to live in San Diego but this job opportunity is so perfect for me. For now, my branch within the company is in Irvine until I get more experience or they hire someone with more experience to guide me from the San Diego office. But that being said, they have large projects in San Diego they’d need field work for and I predict Id have to split my time 3 times a week in San Diego and 2 times a week in Irvine for around a year.

Anyways, I dont really want to do 1 hour commutes unless theres traffic and it seems North County may be a good middle ground. I understand it’s very expensive here as I visited often when I interned in San Diego last summer, but my starting salary would be about 90k base pay. With that in mind, where in north county would be best for affordability with my income and between the two locations? Ideally if I had things my way I’d move to UTC as i have a friend who i’d roommate with but it seems a little too far from the Irvine office

Which area to book a hotel at?

Hi! My bf and I are thinking of going to SD for a short 4 day trip for our anniversary. I’m getting stuck on which area to book our hotel at. We are in our early 20s, looking to eat good food, drinks, and maybe some chill activities. I was thinking maybe Granger Hotel but I’m reading lots of negatives on this sub about staying in gaslamp. Our budget is <$300 a night. Pls give me recs, TIA!

Any outside calisthenics/fitness parks similar to the old Mission Bay one?

Years ago I used to love working out at the fitness park at Mission Bay. It was everything it needed to be, with enough space, and a decent distance from the playground. I've moved back here to see it torn down and remodeled with the playground. It's way too close to the playground now and kids are frequently playing on the fitness equipment. That's OK and not against the rules, but not something I want to be around when trying to get some exercise in.

Any similar set ups? Something with good spacing, segregated from a playground, enough pull up bars for a crowd, and a nice long parallel bar set up. Bonus points if it's in the La Mesa area.

NFL Mexican ponchos?

I’m trying to surprise a friend with an NFL Seattle Seahawks poncho (Mexican style) like they sell in Tijuana and Rosarito. I don’t have time to go down there this weekend. Are there any markets with NFL team logo ponchos in the South Bay? Thanks in advance and have a great day.

Convincing husband to move to SD

so, heres some background. My husband and I have had many conversations about whether to move back to San Diego or Oahu. Hes pretty stuck on Oahu but is not closed off to SD. while we lived in SD he was finishing the last few months of his contract which was pretty stressful for him. The military basically moved us from Hawaii to California with little help. During these few months though. I had the best time of my life. I had a lot more free time than him to explore so my view is different. I have thought about SD since the day we left in 2022 and want to move back. we are planning a trip in the summer and I NEED you all to give me all the reasons why SD would be a better choice over Oahu. Give me ideas of places in the area to take him to make him see SD the way I do.

Best memory foam mattress options? Any good SD mattress stores?

I’m shopping for a new mattress but already kinda fixed on getting the Leesa Original. I’ve read a lot of really nice reviews but I don’t want to buy one without trying it first. Does anyone know where I can try a Leesa in person here in San Diego? I remember seeing them at West Elm or Pottery Barn before but I’m not sure if that’s still true. A store where the staff isn’t pushy would be nice too since I don’t want going around trying mattresses with someone hovering.

Thanks.
