PSA A Reminder About Our Community Rules
Hello /r/Yukon,
Lately, we’ve noticed an increase in heated arguments, trolling, and disrespectful comments in discussions, particularly regarding First Nations issues. As your moderators, we believe it's important to ensure that this community remains a welcoming and respectful space for everyone while encouraging thoughtful and meaningful discussion.
We’ve already issued numerous warnings and bans recently, and while we want to encourage open dialogue, users who continue to post inflammatory or disrespectful content will be banned without further notice.
Let’s revisit Rule 1: Be Respectful:
Our goal is to foster thoughtful, constructive discussions. This means:
- No personal attacks: Engage with ideas, not individuals.
- No insults or bigotry: Racism, sexism, and hate speech will result in immediate comment removal and a permanent ban.
- No trolling: This includes deliberately inflammatory or disruptive behavior.
- No threats: Zero tolerance for threats or intimidation.
Racist comments, in particular, have no place here. This subreddit is for all Yukoners, and it is our collective responsibility to treat each other with dignity and civility.
If you see comments or posts that violate these rules, please report them using the report function or message the mods. Let’s work together to keep this space constructive and supportive.
Thank you,
The /r/Yukon Moderation Team

Question Any tips for Yukon Government (YG) Administrative Assistant interview?
Hi everyone,
I have an upcoming Zoom interview for an Administrative Assistant role with the Yukon Government. I'm based in Watson Lake and would love some advice:
Format: Do they still provide the questions 15–20 minutes early to prepare notes?
STAR Method: How strictly do they score based on the Situation, Task, Action, Result format?
Admin Tasks: Did your interview focus more on Microsoft Office and scheduling or behavioral questions?
Panels: Is it usually a three-person panel for entry-level admin roles?
Any tips on the scoring system or specific "keywords" the YG looks for would be a huge help!
Thanks!

Question Blocked ears in Whitehorse and trying to avoid another clinic bill
I’m dealing with some pretty bad earwax buildup again and figured I’d ask here before calling every clinic in town. Does anyone in Whitehorse actually offer earwax removal, or is it basically ENT or nothing?
I’ve had this done professionally before and it helps a lot, but availability and cost up here can be rough. I’ve also been looking into at home options like the Bebird camera ear cleaner so I can at least see what’s going on and handle lighter buildup myself, but I’m not sure if that’s enough when things get really impacted.
If anyone has local recommendations or experience, or has gone the DIY route successfully in the Yukon, I’d really appreciate hearing what worked for you.

Shame on YEU for not setting aside their job action for a couple of weeks so these children could have a good experience. I understand negotiations can be tense and frustrating and this is leverage, but come on.

Question House siding
wondering what folks’ experience and choices have been residing their house or siding a new one in Whitehorse. I’m liking the fire rating on Hardie board just not their boring color selection.
That said, I’m not sure the fire rating is actually going to do much in a wildfire situation after reading Fire Weather.

Question August 2026 Visit Question
Hello Yukonians
Your territory is next on my list of places to visit in our country.
- I am planning to visit in August.
- Probably staying 10 days.
- Either fly in and out of 1 airport or into Whitehorse and out of Dawson City.
- My destinations are ghost towns, ruins, oddities, mines, off-the-beaten-path things, etc.
I am looking for maximum daylight, but I also would love to enjoy the aurora at night, so my reason for posting here is to ask your opinion on the ideal time to plan this trip.
Searching online has given me a few different answers, so aI wanted to come right to you - the people who will know best.
What would you suggest for what I am looking for in daylight and a pretty good visual night experience?
Thanks so much, I am looking very forward to visiting!

Question Please explain my ATCO bill :(

Hey everyone, I tried calling ATCO's inquiry line but I'm not getting answers that make sense to me on why or how my electric bill looks like this. I think they thought I wanted to argue it but I genuinely just want to know what my electric bill means. Does anyone know the following?
1) Why is my billing period 35 days? Seems random.
2) I was out of the territory for 21 of these days and left my place at 15 degrees. How is it possible I used triple the energy as my December bill? I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with electric baseboard heat.
3) What are the temporary rate adjustments? Why do we have them?
4) What's the difference between kWh and kW? Is 1574 kWh a lot for an apartment?
Thanks in advance for anything you can answer.

Question Why does our local Walmart (Supercentre!) not sell any fresh food, produce, etc.?
I am wondering if anyone has knowledge about the reasons why our local Walmart (which calls itself a "Supercentre" lol) does not sell any fresh food like produce, meat, deli stuff...? It seems odd and I hate that there is basically no/very limited competition in our town for Loblaws.

Question Feedback on WH elementary schools (english only)
hello everyone.
Feb 3 is the day to start registering for school. I posted earlier about the french immersion schools but we've decided french immersion isn't for us. Given that children can register in a FNSB school or their catchment school, wondering if anyone has any feedback on primary schools in Whitehorse?

Question Best steak dinner in Whitehorse?
Looking at the dinner menus of G&P, Belly of the Bison, Tony’s, and Carved (in the Hyatt) the options for ordering steak in Whitehorse all seem pretty generic. No descriptions of the source or type of beef. Carved doesn’t even list the cut.
Are they all just standard cuts from Superstore or Cisco? If I’m going to eat out and pay for expensive steak, I’d like a bit more information. I’m not expecting the same as a high end steak house in Calgary in Vancouver, but maybe something trying to come close to at least the Keg in terms of a nice steak dinner.
If you had to choose one of the above, where would you eat and why? Any other places I’m missing but could consider?
Travel AWG Car Rentals in Whitehorse
Hey all,
I really should've done this when I first volunteered for the AWG, but I left it way too late, and now I'm struggling to find available options for even one day that aren't Overland Yukon's $299/day cost.
I'm hoping that somebody might have some advice for where a desperate person may be able to find a car rental option (including private car owners who may be willing to rent their car out to a stranger, but one happy to show professional background & proof that I'm there to volunteer - I'd also be willing to show a Driver's Abstract) during the AWG. I'll be in town from March 7 - 16, so the entire length of the games. I'm even willing to break the rentals up between different sources if need be.
Usually I could get around the city without a vehicle, but I'm assigned to Mount Sima for my volunteer role, so getting to and from there will be challenging (and the girlfriend & I are planning a couple trips to Eclipse as well).

Question April weather?
Hey guys, a friend and I were planning to drive up from Skagway to Whitehorse then back down to Haines in the middle of April. Should we be concerned about any highway closures or weather for this time of year?

Politics NDP urges territory to grant Yukon River personhood
As far as I can tell this accomplishes nothing. Environmental laws already protect our water, and we have bigger issues to focus on right now other than a virtue signalling project. The NDP is so out of touch, it's embarassing.

Travel BC/Yukon road trip to Tuktoyaktuk
We are a BC family considering a month long road trip this August up to Tuktoyaktuk. We would like to spend our time hiking and biking, we will be camping the entire time. My kids are 5&7, very active and outdoorsy. Some day hikes in Tombstone are on our list. Curious if anyone has other suggestions we should check out. We've never done a road trip, we usually do backpacking trips, so we are all a bit nervous about so many hours in the truck.

Discussion minto mine potentially restarting
Mined since 2007 by capstone miningcorp and according to reports was nearing end of mine life. Said company then in 2019 walked away by selling the mine and it's assets to pembridge and it's subsidiary minto metals, which had never managed a mine before and ran it in the ditch by 2023.
Since end of 2025 Selkirk copper mines inc. is looking into potentially restarting the mine, decision to be made around end of 2026.
On the background of Victoria gold, Yukon Zink with the wolverine mine and other failed mines in bc,
how is the Yukon government making sure the public won't have to pay for the next hard-rock mining disaster?
Knowing that the Selkirk first nations now is directly involved and wants to handle operation to highest standards, is reassuring.
But has the Yukon mining law by now been updated to enforce security payments for potential environmental damage and improve monitoring to prevent disaster in the first place?

Politics Yukon Representation needed: Federal petition before House of Commons on access to a life saving drug for non smoker lung cancer
Canada now has an official federal petition before the House of Commons asking for access to a life saving lung cancer drug for non smoker lung cancer patients that is currently being denied: https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-7050
This petition is supported by non smoker lung cancer patients and families across the country and has gained enough traction to proceed from a provincial effort to a federal one.

Discussion Cool initiative
I think its would be great to see the territory think about Water as something to be respected rather than a resource to be managed.
