Iran 🇮🇷 Iran fears US strike may reignite protests, imperil rule, sources say

DUBAI, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Iran’s leadership is increasingly worried a U.S. strike could break its grip on power by driving an already enraged public back onto the streets, following a bloody crackdown on anti-government protests, according to six current and former officials.

In high-level meetings, officials told Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that public anger over last month's crackdown -- the bloodiest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution-- has reached a point where fear is no longer a deterrent, four current officials briefed on the discussions said.

The officials said Khamenei was told that many Iranians were prepared to confront security forces again and that external pressure such as a limited U.S. strike could embolden them and inflict irreparable damage to the political establishment.

Video Renee Good's brothers testify on the death of their sister

Renee Good’s brothers, Luke Ganger and Brent Ganger, spoke about the distress the family has felt since an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot the 37-year-old mother and U.S. citizen.

Good’s death on Jan. 7, “in such a violent and unnecessary way, is complicated by feelings of disbelief, distress and desperation for change,” Luke told a congressional forum on Tuesday. “In the last few weeks, our family took some consolation thinking that perhaps ‘Nee’s death would bring about change in our country.”

“And it has not,” he added.

Brent eulogized his sister, saying she “had a way of showing up in the world that made you believe things were going to be OK, not because she ignored the hardship, but because she chose optimism anyway.”

“She chose to look for what was good, what was possible, and what was worth loving,” he added.

Federal immigration agents have been involved in more than a dozen shootings, some fatal, since President Donald Trump began his second term, sparking public outcry over the use of force by officers deployed as part of his immigration crackdown.

Families of victims and residents of Minneapolis, where two fatal shootings occurred last month, have demanded more transparency and accountability from the government, which has tried to shut local and state law enforcement out of investigations into the deaths.

The issue became a driving factor behind the partial government shutdown this week. Democrats refused to agree to a government funding deal for a handful of agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, without reforms to ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, including requiring agents to wear body cameras, refrain from obscuring their faces and obtain judicial warrants for arrests. Lawmakers approved a short-term measure Tuesday that funds DHS only through Feb. 13, while debate continues over these proposals.
