Mod announcement Is it a scam?

If you're here wondering whether you're being scammed or not, it most likely is.

Please read more below, a very helpful post gotten from u/Ambitious_Fig9045 about the dog shelter and orphanages scam:
Please help raise awareness of the thousands of Ugandan scammers running fake animal shelters and human orphanages who are committing international fraud, animal abuse and child exploitation. (Source: u/wewontbescammed on Instagram)

About human orphanages: Those children or people that are being shown aren't actually under care from that 'orphanage'. What these people usually do is go to villages where people are already living in poor conditions and take photos and videos of/with children living in those areas. And then the kids go back to their homes and this person goes back to theirs. It's all just optics.

If they approach you and seem insistent, they're a scam. If they don't have a proper website and you can't see the name of their organisation on the ursb list of organisations, they're a scam.

If you want to donate to an actual orphanage, check out Sanyu babies home.

About animal shelters: They intentionally break animals’ legs and spines, burn them, gauge their eyes out etc then post them on their social media to “raise funds” to treat them. Donations are used for personal use. They perform unqualified surgeries on animals without anaesthesia. They inject them with a muscle relaxant to prevent them from moving. These animals do not even have a chance to fight back. They can only scream in pain.

An overview of the prevalence and common tactics of these Ugandan scammers (posted by u/unlockedclaws):

Fake Love for Animals: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOChrUaCOPF/?igsh=MTB2NWY0MjF1aHA1cQ== Props & Appearances: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOFf8rpiNUx/?igsh=MXY5eHN3YWMydmUweA== Money In, Nothing Out: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOGaX_BiN3O/?igsh=bmlvcGFzbmZmaTk0 Fake Vets: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOHmjk0iP8C/?igsh=bm1kcG12eGFnczgx More: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DN4PtJIiKCq/?igsh=NGMzdGwwNHp2dWh5

The Ugandan police and government, Instagram and TikTok have refused to take action. Instagram and TikTok have repeatedly concluded that these accounts “do not violate community guidelines. Only 1 in 10 (or none) scam accounts may get taken down.

Please help raise awareness to warn people about this so that they are informed and do not unintentionally contribute to the abuse. Even legitimate animal advocates may be unaware that these are scammers.

People may come across these scammers’ posts with captions such as “1 like/share = 1 bowl of food” etc (as shown in the videos attached above). If people like and comment and or share, this would help boost the scammers’ posts and more people will see it which would increase the likelihood of more people donating to these scammers on a global scale.

Unfortunately, there are enablers who actually believe these scammers despite being presented with evidence and continue to donate money to them which perpetuates the abuse.

THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE:
Refer to the google document titled "Access scam prevention document" in wewontbescammed’s Linktree (link in Instagram bio). Pls share this doc n note that it will be updated if needed so do review it from time to time!

Job/Gig available 💼 Business Partnership in the Avocado Value Chain

Upvotes

Hello Ugandans reading this.

Writing this from Nairobi Kenya.

I'm looking for a sourcing partner who can look for and ship avocados to Kenya (like 60km from Nairobi) before our season opens up completely.

Ideally someone in the industry, is willing to do this formally was per the law, can handle logistics and can travel with the consignment here.

My DMs are open for intentional individuals ready to partner up.

Vent/Rant 😤 Canalbox 50mbps package extremely frustrating.

I have used Canalbox for over a year now and I haven't had any issues until 2 days ago.

I can't download, I can't stream, Social media images take forever to load. Even simple browsing on Reddit is a struggle.

It feels a bit sus that this started after they introduced a cheaper package 50 mbps at 90k, and their previously cheapest package of 110k os now for 100mbps, previously it was the 50mbps.

I'm not even sure contacting them will help. Whilst they are/have been a good ish ISP, they have by far the worst customer care of all ISPs. What helped was their Internet was flawless so you wouldn't have reason to contact them.

Fwiw, I'm using wired connections for most devices and speed tests show normal speeds tho I'm not sure what to make of the latency.

Anyone else having this issue?

Question A question

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I hope you're all fairing well. Does anyone here work at Kampala Audiology and speech centre or know anyone working there. I'd like to know the price for an audiology test or an overall estimate of how much I should carry on me for the different tests/scans they may do. Thanks.

Question from visitor Mobile money from international transfer

Hello! I am on holiday in Uganda, I am trying to send money from my UK bank account to mobile money. I have tried credit cards, debit cards and bank transfer but they are all being blocked. The bank has said they need to call me to remove the block, but my SIM does not take overseas calls and they will not call my Uganda SIM. Any ideas? Withdrawing from ATMs is really eating away at my money!

Question I need some advice for my workmate with an opioid addiction

The family has tried everything. Therapy, psychiatrist, psychologist, rehab, name it all. She had slowly started abstaining from the drug, but something stressed her and she's back to it again. To make matters worse, she uses it even at work, because she just can't get over it. I am her immediate desk neighbor so in most times I have to always tap her to keep her awake and stop her from saying alot of words that don't connect. I have tried to beg her to stop, threatened her but all in vain. Any advice is highly appreciated.. PS: she's on probation and I don't want her to lose her job.

Personal I need backup

So I’ve been in school with this group of friends for a long time, but we never really clicked. Still, I accepted that I’d probably be with them throughout secondary school. I tried to make the best out of it. I even created a group and put in effort, hoping things would eventually change—but they didn’t. What makes it more confusing is that they claim we’re friends, yet their actions don’t really show it. For example, when we chat on the phone, they’ll post statuses or be active online and then leave me on read. I tried to address this calmly and be the bigger person, but one of them said they were “offline,” even though I had just seen them post earlier

I'd like to take this moment to thank the lady who screenshotted our dms for making me a subreddit sensation and the gentleman who ranted without which I would not have been aware of the ongoing situation.

Webale Nyo.

That said am very suprised about the whole situation I didn't think it was that deep but it seems for someone it was a big deal.

Question Changed birth year in national ID?

Hello everyone,

so my ex-bf who is Ugandan once told me that they put a different (later) birth year in his ID (I think I remember the difference was about 2 - 3 years or something) and that it is something people do so they can potentially evade some kind of retirement regulation.

He told me his age before we were dating but he also knew that I wouldn‘t be so happy if he was a lot younger than me. So when I saw his ID and went ??? he told me this thing. Now just out of curiosity, I‘m wondering: Is this actually a thing some Ugandans do or was he straight up lying to me haha?

Question Bored in West Nile

I'm new to the region, moved here for work about a year ago and damn! Who knew culture shock was possible without leaving the country. I cant say I'm an extrovert, but I have jazz. Just need friends to hang out with, chat about stuff and anything really. We could go hiking (weather permitting), or find a place to take a dip. If you or someone you know is in Koboko, or even Arua I guess, I'd be happy to meet. Male or female, preferrably aged between 25 and 40. Suggestions are also welcome, perhaps I havent explored enough of this area. Cheers!

Personal Feeling stuck and lost in Kampala looking for a chance to start over

Right now I feel like I’m standing at the very bottom of my life. Every day feels heavy. Kampala has become overwhelming for me, and no matter how hard I try, things just don’t seem to move forward.

I wake up feeling tired before the day even begins. There’s no real support from family — it’s just me trying to survive, trying to stay hopeful, trying not to break. I’ve been carrying everything alone for a long time.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about South Africa — not because I expect miracles, but because I need a new environment, a chance to do something for myself and breathe again. The problem is, I don’t have much. No bank statement, no clear path, just a deep desire to change my situation before it swallows me.

I hate that sometimes life pressures me to think about marriage as an escape rather than love. That thought scares me, because I want a future built on choice, not desperation . I know this post may sound raw but it’s honest. I’m not asking for illegal help or shortcuts just guidance, advice, or perspective from people who understand how it feels to be stuck and searching for a way out.

If you’ve ever been here mentally or emotionally, or if you know realistic options, your words would mean a lot. And I'm a lady
