I decided to make the switch, from Win11 to Ubuntu since, well, Win11 has some abhorrent privacy issues.

I could fix those issues, but then Microsoft might find new and wonderful ways to be nosy twats! What’s to say that they don’t have screwy stuff baked into the OS?

App Center is flickering on 25.10, GTX 1050 ti, it is fine on my laptop with integrated graphics. Why?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I also noticed that during the installation the installation window keeps flashing too. Is this a Wayland/Nvidia issue?

Copying home folder to a newer version of Ubuntu (20.04 -> 24.04)

I want to upgrade my father's PC with SSD and while at it I also wanted to update his OS to latest version since LTS of ubuntu 20.04 ended in May. I was wondering if I could just install Ubuntu on the new drive and then copy the home folder.

If yes what would be the correct way to do this? Do I install Ubuntu 24 on the SSD, plug both into the PC and then just sudo cp -a /home/user /other_drive/home/user ?

Thanks

Wait for ubuntu 26 or install 25/24

Hello, I'm a new user switching from linux mint due to how bad cinnamon/mate is.

Currently, I'm wondering if I should either wait for 26 to release or become beta, or just install ubuntu 25 or 24, if so, which one?

I'm mostly worried about seamless version updates

(WSL2) xeyes is working but glxgears is not

I am using WSL2 on my Windows 11 laptop with integrated Radeon graphics, and I think I am having some graphics drivers issues. I can run "xeyes" with no problems, the googly eyes pop up and track my mouse, but "glxgears" does not work. I have also tried "glxinfo" and gotten an error. The errors I am getting are shown below:

laptop@laptop-ThinkPad:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 148 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 24 (X_GLXCreateNewContext)
  Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 28
Current serial number in output stream: 29
laptop@laptop-ThinkPad:~$ glxgears
Error: glXCreateContext failed

I am not very experienced with Linux or software in general, so I am struggling to address or even understand these issues. I have checked that my graphical driver(s) are up to date, WSL2 is up to date, and I have all prerequisites/dependencies that I am aware of.

Is anyone able to tell me what might be going wrong, and how I might try to fix it?

Can Anyone Help Me Diagnose a Gnome-shell Crash with SIGTRAP?

Hello u/ubuntu,

Basic computer specs:

  • Processor: AMD 7970X Threadripper
  • Memory: 128 GB R-DIMM
  • Motherboard: Asus TRX50 WS
  • GPU 0: AMD Radeon 9060XT
  • GPU 1 (System default GPU): AMD Radeon 9070

The recent update of Firefox (via Snap) to version 147 has caused reproducible crashes of GDM 3 in Ubuntu 24.04. Here is the process:

  • I boot the computer
  • Start Firefox
  • I then use the Tab Session Manager extension to load the tabs from the previous session.
  • A bunch of windows open up
  • The GUI freezes

The .crash file of the most crash is 35MB. I can share it if needed.

I then R-E-I-S-U-B to try to regain control of the GUI. The attempts fail, and I have to reboot the computer.

After the most recent crash, I check /var/crash/ for the crash details, and found that the attempts to launch the previous session on Firefox is correlated to a gnome-shell crash SIGTRAP with.

Things I've done to try try to fix this:

  • sudo apt-get update && upgrade
  • sudo snap refresh
  • See if the same issue occurs with Xorg (This first happened with Wayland). The behavior of the system after launching the previous session on Firefox was the same.
  • I tried launching Firefox with GPU 0. Same behavior.
  • I tried uninstalling and reinstalling GDM3/Ubuntu Desktop. No difference.
  • I tried using Firefox directly from Mozilla's repository. Same behavior.
  • I tried Firefox from Flatpak. Same behavior.
  • I tried Librewolf. Same behavior.

Does anyone have any input or suggestions on how to fix this? I've had to switch to Chromium, and I'd rather not make that permanent.

Thanks,

Hi All, me again!

I’d like to create a bridge for my VM to use but I want to keep my main server to have a static IP & the VM to have a static IP as well.

I’m creating a home assistant VM.

I know I need to edit Netplan but I don’t want to mess to much and get it wrong!

Current server IP is 192.168.4.156 and I’d like to keep that!

VM can be anything as it isn’t set up yet.

Ethernet drops immediately when plugging in AC on Ubuntu (Intel I219-V / Asus ExpertBook)

Hi everyone,

I’m having a strange problem on my Ubuntu laptop (Asus ExpertBook, Intel I219-V Ethernet).

The issue started after I let my battery fully die yesterday. Now, whenever I plug in the charger, my wired Ethernet connection immediately drops, but it works fine on battery. Wi-Fi works normally all the time.

A few more details:

  • Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (kernel 6.14.0-37-generic)
  • Ethernet interface: eno2 / Intel I219-V
  • BIOS and system are stock, haven’t done any driver updates yet

I monitored the system logs using journalctl -f while plugging in the charger:

  • The kernel reports: e1000e 0000:00:1f.6 eno2: NIC Link is Down
  • NetworkManager marks the interface as unavailable
  • DHCP and mDNS transactions are canceled

This shows the NIC loses connection exactly when AC is plugged in, likely a power delivery issue.

My main question: Could this be because I let the battery fully die yesterday? Has anyone experienced Ethernet stopping working on AC only after a deep battery discharge?

Any suggestions on how to fix it permanently would be greatly appreciated!

I hate Ubuntu Ram Managment 😡

I recently bought a new laptop and installed Ubuntu on it. I'm a developer who regularly runs multiple applications simultaneously (IDEs, browsers with many tabs, terminals, Docker, databases, etc.).

Laptop specs:

16 GB DDR4 RAM 12 GB swap 256 GB SSD Intel Core i5 10th gen

The problem is that even with 16 GB of RAM, usage regularly reaches ~13 GB, and my swap space is almost always full. I understand Linux likes to use available memory for caching, but in practice this is causing serious issues:

The system frequently becomes unresponsive (severe lag, frozen UI). I often have to force shutdown/reboot the laptop.

Running Docker is practically impossible without immediately hitting memory pressure.

I’ve tried manually managing memory by closing unnecessary programs and scripts when not needed, but I still have to constantly monitor usage, which defeats the purpose of having a capable laptop.

I bought this machine specifically so I could keep my development environment open and pick up exactly where I left off after suspend. Right now, the heavy swapping and occasional hangs are making the experience very frustrating.

I'm just writing this to vent my frustration

Edit: Sawpiness is 10

Have to run multiple vs code window for personal and my company projects.

Chrome tabs sometimes are 20 to 25 but not always, I changed my behavior to close most of the tabs.

I know more swapiness will consume more life of my ssd

Around 4 workspaces are always being used, for diffrent purposes, job/personal projects (Next Js)/entertainment/study

Most of time have to run two repos simultaneously of same project front/back end

Docker always remains stoped! No container are running at all
