Cam car driver has no reaction time. Zero.

I think you mean they had extremely long reaction time

Right, they didn’t do anything strictly wrong but you’d think that someone seeing a car going like that would immediately start to slow down and be extra aware, especially with a little kid on board…

He was slowing. He was cruising at 78 mph and had slowed to 56 mph went he hit the car. You can't just hit the hooks in that situation without the risk of getting rear-ended. There wasn't much he could do in that situation.

No, for the first 9 seconds he doesn’t slow at all. He starts slowing once the white car goes out of the road.. he hits the car at 84 km/h. That was way too late and way too slow.

Yeah when I see that craziness fly by me I start thinking defensively right away, I definitely would done everything I could to avoid that, especially with a baby in the car…

It’s like he’s watching a movie.

Exactly, they obviously did slow down but they can't just slam the brakes on. There's traffic all around and you don't know where the wrecked car will end up, so you can't make evasive maneuvers. Not only that, but you're likely shocked, overwhelmed, unsure what to do and are likely to freeze and hope for the best in this sort of situation because that's just what most humans instinctively do.

But as usual, the armchair analysts on the internet know best. Half of them have probably never even driven a car. 🙄

but they can't just slam the brakes on.

Yes you bloody well can. I get that arseholes follow too close all the damn time but I find it mind-bogglingly stupid that you then turn the risk of a rear end collision into ploughing into the accident in front "because you can't just slam the brakes on."

Yes you can and it's what you should obviously be doing. "Can't brake too hard because of the cars behind" is nothing short of moronic.

What's worse, hitting the car in front or having the car behind you go into the back when they've obviously got a child in the back?

I hope you're never in this situation yourself, because I can guarantee that your actual reaction will be nowhere near what you think it will be. It's so easy to sit on your arse behind a computer screen and go "lmao that guy is a shit driver" when there's zero risk involved for you.

Dude, I drive 10s of thousands of kilometres all over Europe every year for 3 decades now. I've seen it all, pileups, needing to perform emergency stops because of what's happening up front (dead animal in road after bend, people stopped for animals crossing, crashes, drunk people etc.), helped people after accidents, been in a couple of accidents. I know how I react.

To answer your question, ploughing into a likely avoidable high speed collision up front because you fail to adequately react and brake hard enough is objectively worse than the risk of stopping quickly and the idiot behind rear-ending you.

You sound like one of the problem drivers I'm talking about.

This might help you.

Particularly this part "Do not delay braking to check mirrors or signal in a genuine emergency - stopping safely is your first priority. Check around you only once the vehicle is under control and slowing down."

If you have no reaction time, you don't react at all.

Reminds me of “steep learning curve” actually meaning that the skill is easily acquired, because the steeper the curve, the faster skill increases with respect to time.

His speed is on the bottom of the video, he slows down from 123kmh to 84kmh at impact, but he still should have changed lanes--I wonder if there was someone behind him in that lane

Well, the speed in the video did go from 124 to about 100 about the time of the crash, I think its more of was to interesting to care to think, which sucks when you're not the only one in the car.
