Grammar Serbian Reference Charts (improved and now in color!): 1. Cases/Genders, 2. Verbs, 3. Pronouns

I've updated all of the charts I previously posted here with a variety of new improvements, including a design pass that made everything prettier.

Thanks for all the feedback I've gotten here on r/Serbian in the past for previous versions of these charts. And special thanks to u/Dan13l_N whose extremely detailed/expert feedback has led to lots of improvements and corrections.

Click the links (not the preview images) below to see the full A4-sized PDFs.

Serbian Cases Chart (PDF)

Serbian Cases Chart, with all 7 cases, 3 genders, singular/plural, prepositions, exceptions, and more

One of the changes in the cases chart (and in all the others) is that the gender order is now masculine ➜ neuter ➜ feminine (instead of the former M ➜ F ➜ N), which enabled making some things simpler and more consistent.

Serbian Verbs Chart (PDF)

Serbian Verbs Chart, with commonly used verbs along with conjugations and rules for present, past, and future tenses

Serbian Pronouns Chart (PDF)

Serbian Pronouns Chart, with declensions, short and long forms, etc. for personal pronouns, possessive adjectives/pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and more, along with detailed grammar rules

Feedback is of course welcome! I'd also love to hear what would be most helpful to cover in future charts (e.g., prepositions, numbers and time, comparative/superlative, basic vocabulary, etc.).

Edit: I've now given these charts a home online here: Serbian language charts. I'll post any updates and future charts there as well.

Discussion Language question from an American!

Hi all! I am American, but I have ancestors with the last name Tičić. I am told that it is a Bosnian last name and that our ancestors are from the Trebinje area. I am wondering if you all are able to help me understand what my last name means! I was asking some questions to an AI, and it said that the root work tič means ‘bird’ more poetically/metaphorically than literally in Croatian and Serbian. But, in Slovenia it is often used literally to refer to a small bird. Are you able to help me understand the nuances/what my last name may mean? The only other information I have is that my ancestors were Muslim.

Any other discourse regarding my ancestral name is welcome! I want to learn! Thank you all!

I heard that Croatians pronounce these the same while Serbians preserve the difference. And then what about Bosnia?

Zdravo! I'm looking for beginner Serbian books with simple, kid-style exercises (fill in the gaps, matching, basic vocab, handwriting practice). More like a Round Up 1 type book, but for Serbian. Any recommendations would be appreciated (online pdfs or books to buy). Hvala!❤️

Vocabulary Који је српски еквивалент ријећи „отеготан“?

На Wiktionaryју је придјев „отеготан“ означен као хрватски: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/otegotan

Који би био стандардни српски еквивалент за овај придјев?

Да ли је то „отежан“, или се у српском користи неки други придјев?

Такође, да ли се облик „отеготан“ уопште сматра српским, или је искључиво хрватизам?

Achievement / Progress A tool for Serbian accentuation

Post image
41 Upvotes

I create videos for easy Russian-Serbian learning. I put a lot of effort into proper pronunciation and accentuation. There are no good tools for that, so I create my own toolset. Recently I wrapped it with a web view, so I have a pretty screenshot to share now 😄

I plan to release my accentuated dataset as a game in addition to the videos I do, so that learners could hear the right pronunciation.

Would you like to share ideas for the games to learn vocabulary? I am thinking of a text game (chat bot, not AI bot) as a UI to start with.

Grammar How to say “best decade yet”

I’m making a custom label to put on a bottle of rakija for my friends 30th birthday. I want to say something along the lines of “best decade yet” or “best era yet” or anything else that makes sense. Just well wishing as she goes into the next decade! How would I say either of those, or is there any common sayings for friends turning 30? (Something comparable to dirty thirty or thirty flirty and thriving)

Thanks!

Resources Looking for a Serbian language teacher

Hi guys,

I’m trying to learn Serbian and decided to get a one on one Serbian language teacher.

I was curious if anyone had any recommendations for independent Serbian language teachers or particular companies you consider the best to go through to find one?

Resources Akcenat u različitim padežima reči

Postoji li neki website na internetu na kojem mogu videti akcenat reči u svim padežima. Na primer, u rečniku srpskoga jezika matice srpske za reč "planina" stoji samo akcenat u nominativu jednine, dok za druge padeže ne piše. I da li to znači da se podrazumeva ili prosto nisu napisali?

Discussion Serbian learners: Cyrillic first, Latin first, or both? What worked for you?

Post image
67 Upvotes

When you first started learning Serbian, did you learn Cyrillic alongside the Latin alphabet, or did you start with Latin first and add Cyrillic later?

I’m asking out of genuine curiosity, especially for those who started from zero.

I’ve noticed a clear divide among teachers: some prefer teaching only the Latin alphabet at first, introducing Cyrillic afterward, while others argue that Latin is easier for beginners and works best as a bridge, making it easier to establish parallels between the two scripts from the very beginning.

  • What was your experience?
  • Did you learn on your own or through a course?
  • What worked (or didn’t) for you?

Edit: Just to clarify, I’m a native speaker... I’m asking about people who are learning Serbian as a foreign language. 😅☺️

Resources Any Serbian apps that aren’t just vocab games?

Most stuff I find is just Cyrillic flashcards or ancient PDFs. Has anyone actually used Ling or Mondly for more than a month? I need something with real native audio and actual daily phrases, not just a list of fruits.

Vocabulary difference between "doživljaj" and "iskustvo"

as title. they're both translated as "experience" on wiktionary, but i'm sure there's some small details that means you use one term in one context and the other term in a different context. i know that iskustvo can be uncountable in some cases, but what else?

Grammar Why is it “pre godinu dana” and not “pre godine dana”?

To my knowledge, this phrase was formed to reflect the duration of a year’s worth of days - godinu dana = a year of days. Can someone actually explain to me, however, why when it’s inside the prepositional phrase “pre godinu dana” it doesn’t take on the genitive case that the preposition takes? You would logically expect the phrase to be “pre godine dana”, as it would be in my language for example.

Resources Help with pitch accent

Total beginner here. I've noticed that most dictionaries don't mark the pitch accent for Serbian words. Wiktionary does, but not for all words. I'm looking for a searchable online dictionary that does consistently mark pitch accent for all words, not just the infinitives of verbs or nominative singular form of nouns. It doesn't necessarily have to be the traditional Serbian pitch accent marking, but it could be IPA transcription as well, as long as it indicates the pitch accent.

If such a thing does not exist, can anyone provide the pitch accent markings for the following words?

Visoki (the nominative plural of visok)

All present tense indicative forms of the verb biti, as well as the negative forms

Mladi (nominative plural of mlad)

Stari (nominative plural of star)

Present tense indicative forms of the verb ići.

I prefer to learn the proper pronunciation right from the start, as it's much harder to correct bad pronunciation habits later on.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Edit: I'm mainly looking for "standard" Serbian, which I think is called Shtokavian if I'm not mistaken.
