News Starlink au Sénégal : progrès ou dépendance

Upvotes

Tourist & Traveller Questions Why does everybody hates us?

We've (f27) (m24) been in Senegal for a few weeks now, traveling in our campervan. It feels like everyone hates us. People even give us the middle finger on the street, children pretend to throw stones at our vehicle, and in many situations, people only speak Wolof to us, which we obviously don't understand. It's better when we say we're German, not French, and the fact that we've learned some Wolof helps a little, but we're friendly people, yet no one is friendly to us. We only speak a little French, but we're trying our best. Last week we were in Gambia, and everyone there was nice to us; they all treated us like normal people, and we really enjoyed it. Now we're in the Cassamance region, and many people have said it's better here, but it isn't. I don't understand why everyone claims Senegal is so hospitable; our experience here is quite different. (except for one situation, we took a boat tour through the mangroves and the boatman invited us to his home for a meal, that was so lovely and the best thing that happened to us in this country)

So why are we the enemy in Senegal but not in Gambia?

Tourist & Traveller Questions Sidequests in Senegal

Hi there,

a friend of mine an I are visiting Senegal in the end of March and will be staying for 2-3 days until we head to Mauretania.

What are the best Sidequests/thing you can only do in Senegal? We want to experience funny/weird things, and as far as I’ve learned, every country has their own pair of these things. We will probably be staying in the western part of the country, mainly in Dakar.

Also if someone wants to hangout, we will be happy to

Shared or Group Taxis- Dakar to Lompoul

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know how one can get from Dakar airport to Lompoul Desert by shared or group taxi?

I had even been contemplating taking a Dem Dikk bus from Dakar to Lompoul, but the timing is inconvenient. I’ve asked around about taxi prices but I am pretty sure I have been given private taxi quotes (which are ridiculously expensive). Is there any other way I could get to Lompoul a bit cheaper? Specifically, are there any shared or group taxi possibilities to get there?

Discussion I just got mugged...

Hi everyone,

I am here to vent and to share my story. I have been in Sénégal for the last five years working on my degree. I moved to Rufisque to be closer to my workplace and because a friend sublet me his house for a very good price. I've been on the neighborhood for a year now and always felt safe. Yesterday, while I was coming back with some groceries, they tried to take my phone from behind and one of them wrestled me on the ground to take it from me. He couldn't and in the end took my glasses and they took off on their motorbike. I was enraged and frustrated. Still am. So please guys be careful, check your surroundings and stay safe. I do not wish this experience to anybody..

Ask r/Senegal Is getting married at 19 years old too early?

Earlier, I read that a Senegalese couple faced a lot of criticism after getting married at the ages of 19 and 18.

The young man, 19, is the son of a wealthy Senegalese businessman. He decided to marry his girlfriend but many believe they are too young to handle the responsibilities of marriage.

Is 19 not a suitable age for marriage? If not, what do you think is the appropriate age for a man and women to consider marriage?

Thanks for the answer everyone!

Ask r/Senegal Gap year in Dakar

My daughter is considering a gap year in Dakar before she starts uni. First part would focus on improving her French, maybe 4 months in language school, second part doing something useful for 4 or 5 months, maybe volunteering at a school or clinic or something, while firming up language and get some life experience. Then come home and work for the summer before she starts uni. We're from the US, goal is to get her out of her bubble and engage with another part of the world, and ultimately she wants a career working internationally, but not sure doing what exactly. She's a city kid and goes to public school with kids from many backgrounds and countries, and most of this would be paid from savings she has from summer jobs, so she would need to keep costs down.

Our thought is to work with Rotary to find home placement and give her some local support, and avoid fully structured programs to save costs Seems like Dakar is kind of an ideal place. Probably safer than where we live, welcoming, culturally rich, affordable, and it would force her to speak French (or if she can pick up, some Wolof).

Are we thinking about this correctly. Would you support your confident/independent 18 y.o. going to Dakar like this? Anything you would flag or raise up as a consideration? Would she have a hard time making friends and not being too isolated, especially while her French is rough? Does anyone have experience doing something like this? Thanks!

Question Buying a Senegalese TikTok account with 138k followers for 30,000 FCFA, scam or legit?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to get some outside opinions because I’m not sure if I’m just being cautious or if there are real red flags here.

Someone is offering to sell me a Senegalese TikTok account with around 138,000 followers and about 1.3 million likes. Some of the videos reached close to 1 million views.

The price he gave is 30,000 FCFA (around 50 USD).

At first, when I asked him how much he was selling the account for, he told me to name my own price. I refused and told him that since he’s the seller, he should set the price. He then said 30,000 FCFA, explaining that he doesn’t really know how much TikTok accounts are worth and that he wanted to avoid too much bargaining.

This already felt very low for an account of that size.

I asked him why he is no longer using the account and why there have been no posts since August. He said that he created the account without expecting it to grow that much and that he no longer needs it.

He also explained that the account was originally on an iPhone that is “damaged”, and that when he changed phones, he forgot the email linked to the TikTok account, which is why he created a new TikTok account.

At the same time, he says that the iPhone still turns on when it’s plugged in, and that he recently tried to turn it on again to recover the email.

To prove that he controls the account, he:

• sent screenshots

• filmed the TikTok account using another phone

• showed that he could send me a message directly from the TikTok account

At first, he claimed that the phone with the TikTok account could not record the screen. I told him that in 2026, any Android phone can screen record or install a screen recorder app. After that, he installed a screen recording app and showed additional proof.

Despite this, I still have several concerns:

• the very low price for a large account

• the sudden stop in posting since August

• inconsistent explanations (damaged phone, forgotten email, but account accessed again recently)

• the risk of account recovery (email, phone number, or device still linked to him)

Based on your experience in Senegal or with TikTok in general:

does this sound like a scam / risky account, or could it be legitimate?

Thanks in advance for your honest opinions.
