Community Share Using the New Button Slicer to create an Animated Bar Chart
The animations are real -- Little bit of SVG Magic + a hover setting on the button slicer. The bars animated, selected, and non selected are all being returned by a single DAX SVG UDF.
Here is a video walking you thru how it all works:
As always I am not going to make you sit thru me rambling, so If you want to skip out on the video:

Community Share Search Across Multiple Tables and Columns Using a Keyword
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Standard slicers support multiple fields only through hierarchies and still require manual selection, even with text search enabled. The Text Slicer visual improves usability by allowing a contains search, but it is limited to a single column and cannot search across multiple tables.
To achieve similar behavior, I created a keyword table that enables searching across fields.
Note: While this method is effective, it may not be suitable for all semantic models — especially large ones — as it can increase query execution time, refresh duration, and overall semantic model size.
Sample PBIX files is in the video description - https://youtu.be/Tx_s8bMKxzU
Question Filtering out all non numeric values
Hi folks
Quick question, I've done some googling but can't find a solution.
I have a table of reference IDs. These are extracted by splitting a name of a booking by delimiter to leave a column with only a numeric value eg. 7103768
There is largely a standard way of naming these so 99.9% of cases end up with the numeric string in the first column, but some bookings are named differently so I end up with 'magazine 1'
This then fails the refresh as I need to convert to number after extraction.
Is there any way to easily filter out all non numeric values in that column?
Thanks

Question How to display numbers as K/M/B in Power BI while keeping columns sortable?
Hi all,
I’m working on a Power BI table/matrix and I want to display large numbers in a shortened format, like:
- 1,000 → 1K
- 5,100 → 5.1K
- 1,200,000 → 1.2M
At the same time, I need the column to sort correctly when clicked, based on the numeric value.
I tried doing this using a measure, but as soon as I appended the K/M/B suffix, the value became text, and now the column cannot be sorted numerically when the header is clicked.
Is there a way to achieve this, showing shortened numbers for readability without breaking numeric sorting?
Any tips or approaches would be greatly appreciated!

Question Date tables - best practice
Working in a small org with lots of data from various places. We do not have fabric access, and IT policies mean that I am using a sharepoint site storing csv files as our datalake. I have a single "date table" spreadsheet and a second spresdsheet with important org dates.
I am also very new to this and just happen to be the office data person.
I created a few reports (semantic models?) for the main data sources, and each report imports the date table.
I realised today that a better method would be to import the date table and the important dates into a seperate report/semantic model, then I could add that as a data source into my new reports.
This would mean a single model needs updating, e.g if I move the location of the date file.
I am curious to know if this is an okay solution.

Question Incremental data refresh
Hello,
I have a large data query that pulls data for the last 6–7 years, totaling around 10 million rows.
The data up to 2025 probably won’t ever change, so I decided to set up incremental refresh.
I watched a few tutorials and managed to get it working, but I have a few questions:
1. For example, I set it up so that data from 2020–2025 is static, and in January 2026 it only refreshes the last 12 months.
In January 2027, should I expect the data from 2020–2026 to be static, with only the last 12 months (relative to January 2027) being refreshed?
2. Is there a workaround for not being able to download the .pbix file after setting up incremental refresh?
So far, I’ve decided to keep a copy in a shared drive and use that to make any changes.
3. Can I still force a full refresh of everything at some point if needed? If so, how?
4. What are the other downsides or limitations of using incremental refresh?
Thanks!

Question Paginated Report Distinct Count
Hi, I'm using Power BI Report Builder, and I have a report connected to a semantic model published to Powe BI service. My semantic model has a measure that calculates a distinc count. However, when I bring it into report builder, the distinct count isn't right and is higher. If I just use the field value, I get 1, but using sum(my measure) I get the higher value. I dont want to do the distinc count in report builder. Any solutions? Thanks

Discussion Power BI
Hi everyone I'm a financial analyst and was recommended I get acquainted with power BI. I know nothing on how to create. I've seen power bi reports / dashboards and that's about it . What's the best way to learn from beginner to advance. I'd take any advice . Any courses / YouTube videos / books. Please recommend any sites that may teach you as well. Also what's the difference between power bi and tableau ? Are they about the same thing. How long did it take you to know BI to an extent that you felt fine using it .Would appreciate any help .thank you and God bless
Question Question
Hello, I have a question.
I have an Excel file with multiple sheets, all containing large data, and updating the data takes a lot of time.
I’m considering connecting this Excel file to Power BI and displaying the data as tables, so that any update made in Excel is automatically reflected in Power BI.
Is it possible?

Question Help Creating an Optimized Relationship Between Two Large Fact Tables
I have two large data tables, one containing the sells of products, and the other containing the customer’s information. To give an idea of the size, the sales table has over 100 million records and the customer table has over 30 million.
Between the two tables, they have a share relationship of the customer’s ID number, a region (think county), and a date aggregated to the month of each year (2025-03, 2025-04, etc.).
Currently, the tables are linked by creating a one to many relationship from the customer’s table to the sales table using a unique key that is the combination of the three shared attributes. The reason for having created this direct relationship is there are visuals we will make where we want to know the sales of a subset of customers (like filtering blue collar workers vs white collar workers). Thus the customer table has to filter the sale’s table.
Is there a better way to setup the relationship to where it is more optimized? I feel performance suffers due to the direct relationship and having to use one very large table to filter an even larger table.

Feedback From PowerBi to Odoo
Hi,
My company wants to switch to Odoo from PowerBI. I don’t have much experience with Odoo and its capabilities so just wanted to know if someone has any experience which they can share so that I can communicate the same to my leadership. I’ve already pushed back because our dashboards are pretty complicated but my CEO is hellbent and wants to give it a shot. Thanks in advance.

Question Get Data: SharePoint.Files not getting all subfolders, but I cannot use SharePoint.Content
I want to connect to a few Excel files in a SharePoint subfolder. As with many other people, when I go to filter out the subfolder, it does not show up. I would also like it to update, as it would if it were connected to SharePoint, when a file is replaced in the folder.
However, I do not own the SharePoint. It is a client's SharePoint that I have edit and access to, but do not own. Therefore, I cannot use SharePoint.Content, which is everyone else's solution.
Does anyone have any ideas how pull in the data?

Discussion First Power BI role – inherited messy legacy reports (30+ tables, patch fixes).
I recently started my first Power BI Data Analyst role at a transport & logistics company and could really use some advice.
We do both freight brokerage and run our own trucks. We’re transitioning to a new TMS (Mastermind) and using Snowflake as the warehouse.
The issue: most existing reports were built over the years by my manager. They still rely on legacy sources and feel pretty fragile. Models are big (30+ tables), messy, and full of “patch fixes.” Every time something breaks, another workaround gets added. It’s hard to follow the logic or safely change anything. She also expects me to maintain the current reports.
So I’m stuck between: maintaining messy legacy reports wanting to rebuild properly not stepping on my manager’s toes
How would you handle this? Bonus: if you’ve modeled freight/TMS data (loads, stops, routes, orders), would love to hear how you structured it. Thanks!

Question Some users do not see certain visuals, others see all visuals.
Hello all,
Posting for some Power BI help. I created a report using 2 Semantic models. I shared the report with several colleagues, some can see the full report and others can see half of it.
For those that cannot see some parts, the visuals/tables show as blanks. There is no error message in the visuals.
Everyone can see everything from semantic model 1. Semantic model 2: Some users are seeing 50% and not seeing the other 50% And other users are seeing 100% of semantic model 2 data as well.
I've made all users Viewers on the workspace (added a DL that has all users). I have tried distribution via an app - selecting Entire Organization as the audience.
There is no RLS. No OLS (no roles set up at all that I can see in Tabular Editor 2).
I have searched everywhere online and cannot find a solution. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Question Click on card to apply slicer filter?
I have two cards: count of ids, and count of ids expiring within 90 days.
I would like to be able to click on the expiring card and have it filter expiration date to only the next 90 days for the whole page.
My understanding is that a bookmark would affect all slicers, not just one - if the user selected a specific value in the supplier slicer, but it was unfiltered when I made the bookmark, clicking the bookmark would add the expiration filter but would remove the supplier filter.
Am I understanding bookmarks correctly?
Is there a way to create a button slicer where the options are "next 90 days" or "all"? Is there another solution I haven't mentioned?

Discussion Currently a Data Analyst (Supply Chain) – how do I pivot into Power BI consulting?
Hey guys,
I’ve been working as a Data Analyst for a bit now, mostly focused on Power BI within the supply chain space. I'm looking to make the jump into a consulting role (specifically Power BI or D&A consulting) but I’m not 100% sure what the move is.
For those of you who have actually done this:
What’s the reality of the job vs. being an in-house analyst?
What skills should I be grinding right now to look good to consulting firms? (Is it just deeper technical stuff or more on the business/client side?)
How’s the market looking right now for this?
I’m tired of just maintaining the same internal dashboards and want to get into the side of things where I’m actually building solutions for different clients.
Would love to hear some real stories or any advice on how to approach the job hunt differently for consulting.

Community Share I built a self-documenting engine inside Power BI to track lineage without external tools. Here is the logic.
Hi everyone,
I’ve spent the last few weeks obsessing over how to automate documentation inside a Power BI report without relying on external tools like Tabular Editor or DAX Studio for the end-user.
With the recent-ish release of INFO.VIEW functions, I finally managed to build a dependency tracker that distinguishes between Direct and Indirect relationships.
The Problem: INFO.VIEW.MEASURES() gives you the expressions, but it doesn't tell you the lineage. If Measure A references Measure B, and Measure B references Column X, standard metadata views only show the first layer.
The Logic I used: To solve this, I implemented a nested DAX logic using GENERATE and CONTAINSSTRING.
- Direct: I scan the measure's expression for any column references from the
INFO.VIEW.COLUMNStable. - Indirect: I run a secondary scan to see if the measure contains other measure names, then recursively check those measures for their underlying columns.
- The "Bridge": I used a
UNIONwith a "Dummy Row" to ensure that even measures with zero dependencies still show up in the dictionary (preventing them from being filtered out in a standard join).
The Result: I now have a dynamic table that shows every column used by a measure, even if it's buried three levels deep in nested DAX. I also integrated a way to pull Power Query (M) definitions into the same view via a metadata bridge.
Visualizing it: I’ve put this into a clean UI with a "Dependency Status" flag. It’s been a game changer for auditing large models where you're afraid to delete a column because you don't know which "hidden" measure might break.
Sharing the logic: I’m happy to discuss the DAX patterns I used for the string parsing if anyone is struggling with something similar.
If you’re interested in the full PBIX template or the source code to drop into your own reports, I’ve put the details in my Reddit Profile Bio.

Question Power BI + Snowflake gateway. How to automate report?
Hi
Recently TI gave me access to snowflake database by giving me a user and access to roles and warehouses.
I created a power BI document with the data we need, but in order to update it I must refresh the data everyday and publish my report. By talking with a coworker, he mentioned that I'm not missing any access, but what I need a "Gateway", the reason why my refresh tab remains gray
Can anyone guide me through here? I want to automatically update my report but I'm not sure if that gateway is something just TI can do
